Microfibrillated cellulosic fibrous product was successfully obtained from Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.) by using two alternative pretreatments (steam and ozone treatments) followed by disk milling (DM). The steam and ozone treatments were effective in extracting some of the hemicelluloses and degrading lignin, respectively, with both types of treatment resulting in the improvement of mechanical fibrillation as a result of loosening of the cell wall structure. The obtained products showed nanoscopic fibrous morphology even though hemicelluloses and lignin components remained. The specific surface area and filtration time were increased using the DM treatment after both treatments, and the values increased further with longer periods of DM. The paper sheets of the fibrillated products after both the alternative treatments had higher tensile properties at the same DM time scale than the sheets of the products obtained without treatment. Tensile strength was further increased by increasing sheet density showing the highest tensile strength and modulus of 125 MPa and 20 GPa, respectively.

본 연구에서는 국산 참오동나무재의 열처리에 의한 재질특성의 변화를 조사하였다. 비교를 위하여 은사시나무와 소나무재의 열처리 특성을 조사, 검토하였다. 세 공시수종의 목재시험편을 160°C, 180°C, 200°C 및 220°C의 전기로 내에서 2시간 열처리 후, 재색변화(L*a*b*), 밀도, 중량감소율 및 셀룰로오스의 상대결정화도를 측정하였다. 재색변화 측정결과, 명도(L*)는 세 공시수종 목재 모두 200℃ 이상에서 크게 감소하였다. 참오동나무재와 은사시나무재의 적-녹색도(a*)와 황-청색도(b*)는 열처리 온도증가에 따른 차이는 거의 없었으나, 소나무재의 b*는 200℃ 이후 감소하였다. 참오동나무재의 재색변화량(ΔE*)은 160℃ 열처리에서는 거의 없었고 180℃ 이상에서 크게 나타났으나, 은사시나무와 소나무재는 160℃에서도 재색변화가 크게 나타났다. 참오동나무재의 밀도는 160～180℃ 열처리에서는 거의 변화가 없었고, 중량감소율은 참오동나무재가 가장 크게 나타났다. 열처리온도 증가에 따라 세 수종의 목재의 중량감소율과 상대결정화도는 증가하였으나 밀도는 다소 감소하였다. 결론적으로 참오동나무재는 색변화 온도, 중량감소율 및 상대결정화도 증가량이 비교수종 목재와 다른 특성을 나타났다.

Effects of Heat Treatment on the Characteristics of Royal Paulownia (Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud.) Wood Grown in Korea(국산 참오동나무재의 열처리 특성)

Hydrolysis of biomass for the production of fermentable sugar can be improved by the addition of surfactants. In pulp and paper mills, lignin, which is a by-product of the pulping process, can be utilized as a fine chemical. In the hydrolysis process, lignin is one of the major inhibitors of the enzymatic breakdown cellulose into sugar monomer. Therefore, the conversion of lignin into a biosurfactant offers the opportunity to solve the waste problem and improve hydrolysis efficiency. In this study, lignin derivatives, a biosurfactant, was applied to enzymatic hydrolysis of various lignocellulosic biomass. This Biosurfactant can be prepared by reacting lignin with a hydrophilic polymer such as polyethylene glycol diglycidylethers (PEDGE). In this study, the effect of biosurfactants on the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated sweet sorghum bagasse (SSB), oil palm empty fruit bunch, and sugarcane trash with different lignin contents was investigated. The results show that lignin derivatives improve the enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated biomass with low lignin content, however, it has less influence on the enzymatic hydrolysis of other pretreated biomass with lignin content higher than 10% (w/w). The use of biosurfactant on SSB kraft pulp can increase the sugar yield from 45.57% to 81.49%.

Contemporary proteomic research on lignocellulosic enzymes and enzymolysis: A review

White Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq.) is one of the fast growing species in Indonesia and has the potential as the raw material for pulp and paper. In this research, 3, 5, and 7 years old White Jabon woods were pulped under different active alkali charge of 15%, 18%, 21%, 24%, and 27%, and its effect on delignification degree, kappa number, pulp yield, pulp viscosity, brightness, unbeaten freeness, and delignification selectivity was investigated. The results showed that tree age and active alkali concentration influenced the quality of pulp and pulping properties, except for that of unbeaten freeness. Delignification degree increased with increasing active alkali charge, and this brought about the decrease of pulp kappa number. The pulping yield tended to decrease below the Klason lignin of approximately 4%. Even though the 3 years old wood resulted in the highest brightness and highest delignification selectivity, the highest pulp viscosity was obtained with the 5 years old wood. The dominant fiber length of all wood ages was in the range of 1.2 - 2.0 mm. The 3 years old wood was considered to be the most promising raw material for kraft pulping in the view point of pulping properties, pulp quality and harvesting rotation.

Preparation of Cellulose Nanofibers from Domestic Plantation Resources

The radial variation of rays within the stems of Dahurian larch and Japanese larch growing in Korea was studied to obtain valuable information to identify the two species and determine wood quality. Uniseriate ray height, fusiform ray height, ray number, ray spacing, and epithelial cell number were investigated by optical microscopy. The heights of uniseriate and fusiform rays and epithelial cell numbers in Dahurian larch were lower than those in Japanese larch. Dahurian larch wood had greater ray number and ray spacing than Japanese larch wood. In both species, the heights of uniseriate and fusiform rays and epithelial cell number increased with increasing growth ring number but then stabilized from a certain growth ring number. However, ray number and ray spacing decreased with age but were stable toward the bark. There were significant differences in all ray properties between the two species. Furthermore, in both species, the number and spacing of rays showed a significant negative correlation with uniseriate ray height. The relationships between uniseriate and fusiform ray height, and between ray spacing and ray number were significantly positive. In conclusion, the results from this study provide basic information that can be used to identify these species, and the quality indices from ray properties will improve the effective utilization of the two woody species.

Ray properties in the stems of Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii) and Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi)

본 연구에서는 인도네시아의 목재자원 중 새로운 유망 목재자원을 개발하고 최근 주요 조림 수종들의 효율적 이용을 위한 기초자료를 수집하기 위해 인도네시아산 10수종의 해부학적 특성을 조사하였다. 모든 수종은 산공재로써 고립관공, 방사복합관공이 관찰되었는데, Mangium에서는 위의 특성과 더불어 접선복합관공이 관찰되었다. 접선방향의 관공 직경은 Jeunjing과 Nangka를 제외한 전 수종에서 방사방향보다 큰 값을 보였다. 특히 Nangka는 공시수종 중 가장 큰 접선방향의 관공 직경을 보였다. 단위면적( $mm^2$ )당 관공의 수는 Mangium, Gandaria와 Kupa가 다른 수종보다 많았으며, 특히 Kupa가 가장 많게 나타났다. 유세포의 접선방향 폭은 Gmelina, Mangium, Kupa와 Mangga가 목섬유의 접선방향 폭보다 크게 나타났으며, 그 중 Mangium이 가장 큰 폭을 보였다. 이 밖의 6수종은 반대로 목섬유의 접선방향 폭이 유세포의 접선방향 폭보다 크게 나타났으나 Durian과 Nangka는 그 차이가 타 수종에 비해 미미했다. Gmelina, Jeunjing과 Rambutan은 평복세포로 이루어진 동성방사조직이, Gandaria는 평복세포와 단열의 직립세포로 구성된 이성방사조직이, Mangium, Durian, Jengkol, Kupa, Mangga와 Nangka는 평복세포와 약 1~2열의 직립세포로 구성된 형태의 이성방사조직이 관찰되었다. Durian, Gandaria, Jengkol, Jeunjing, Mangga, Rambutan은 결정을, Jeunjing과 Mangga는 실리카를 함유하는 특징을 나타냈다. 【The anatomical characteristics of the ten Indonesian wood species (Gmelina, Jeunjing, Mangium, Durian, Gandaria, Jengkol, Kupa, Mangga, Nanaka and Rambutan) were investigated by optical microscopy. All the species were diffuse-porous with solitary and radial pore multiple. In Mangium, however, tangential pore multiple was observed as well. Tangential diameter of pore was larger than that of radial one except for Jeunjing and Nangka. Nangka showed the largest tangential diameter of pore among the species. Vessel number per $mm^2$ of Mangium, Gandaria and Kupa was higher than that of the other species. Especially Kupa showed highest vessel number. The tangential width of axial parenchyma cell in Gmelina, Mangium, Kupa and Mangga was larger than that of wood fiber, while the other species showed the opposite trend. Mangium was the largest in tangential width of axial parenchyma cell. Rays were homocellular composed only of procumbent cell in Gmelina, Jeunjing and Rambutan. Heterocellular rays composed of procumbent cells in the body and one row of upright and/or square in the margin are observed in Gandaria. Mangium, Durian, Jengkol, Kupa, Mangga and Nangkabody showed heterocellular rays composed of procumbent cells in the body and mostly 1~2 rows of upright and/or square cells in the margin. Crystals occurred in Durian, Gandaria, Jengkol, Jeunjing, Mangga and Rambutan and silica in Jeunjing and Mangga.】

Anatomical characteristics of White Jabon (Arthocephalus cadamba) and Red Jabon (Arthocephalus macrophyllus) were investigated by IAWA hardwood feature list. Both species were diffuse-porous, and radial multiple pore with 2~3 rows was mostly observed. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina was 100 to , and vessels per square millimeter were 5 to 20. White Jabon has more vessels than Red Jabon. The number of solitary pore per square millimeter in both species was similar, but more pore multiple was observed in White Jabon. Axial parenchyma diffuse was observed in both species, but axial parenchyma of White Jabon was hardly identified on the cross section. Rays were classified into "body ray cells procumbent with over 4 rows of upright/square marginal cells" type and partly "all ray cells upright and/or square" type on radial section. Ray width 1 to 3 cells and 1 to 2 cells observed in White Jabon and Red Jabon, respectively. Ray height of White Jabon was and Red Jabon . Fiber length was the range of 900 to in both species, and it showed a tendency to increase from pith to bark. Consequently, it is considered that pore multiple, ray width and axial parenchyma are to be suggested the keys for identification of both species.
