The purpose of this study was to determine the effects work roles (patient managementsservice provider, administratorsmanager, researcher, educator, and student) and their associated tasks have on the choice of information sources used to meet private practice dentists' information needs Additionally, the study investigated how the Internet has affected the information seeking of dentists Using Leckie, Pettigrew, and Sylvain's (1996) model of the information seeking of professionals as the conceptual framework, vignette-based, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 dentists in the metropolitan areas of Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett, Washington Follow-up interviews were used to investigate dentists' use of the Internet Findings revealed that the type of work role-related task significantly shapes dentists' choices of information sources; the Internet emerged as a significant information source because it provides up-to-date information in a convenient and timely manner; the Internet is a complement to traditional information sources, not a replacement for them; and the Leckie and associates (1996) general model of professional information seeking is supported by this study © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

Work roles, tasks, and the information behavior of dentists

Internet technology holds potential as a valuable educational tool, but several challenges continue to impede its use. This article describes the use of a web-based course to educate staff nurses regarding evidence-based acute pain management practices for older adults. Specific areas highlighted include: the steps involved in creating the web-based course; the materials and support required to disseminate the course; the challenges encountered in promoting use of the course; and responses to and evaluations of the course. The authors' experiences provide knowledge to assist other healthcare professionals on the use of a web-based course to educate staff nurses.

Hospital nurses’ use of knowledge-based information resources

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to profile the information seeking behaviour of nursing students, according to learning style, personality and self‐efficacy in information literacy. Such profiles should help students to reflect on their information seeking, and should help librarians in designing information literacy programmes that are targeted to student needs.Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire using existing validated scales for learning styles, personality, and information literacy self‐efficacy was developed. The information seeking portion was based on an information behaviour model with core processes (opening, orientation and consolidation) and corresponding micro‐processes. Profiling information behaviour of nursing students: part 1: quantitative findings

The majority of children requiring emergency care are treated in general emergency departments (EDs) with variable levels of pediatric care expertise. The goal of the Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids (TREKK) initiative is to implement the latest research in pediatric emergency medicine in general EDs to reduce clinical variation. Objectives To determine national pediatric information needs, seeking behaviours, and preferences of health care professionals working in general EDs. Methods An electronic cross-sectional survey was conducted with health care professionals in 32 Canadian general EDs. Data were collected in the EDs using the iPad and in-person data collectors. Results Total of 1,471 surveys were completed (57.1% response rate). Health care professionals sought information on children’s health care by talking to colleagues (n=1,208, 82.1%), visiting specific medical/health websites (n=994, 67.7%), and professional development opportunities (n=941, 64.4%). Preferred child health resources included protocols and accepted treatments for common conditions (n=969, 68%), clinical pathways and practice guidelines (n=951, 66%), and evidence-based information on new diagnoses and treatments (n=866, 61%). Additional pediatric clinical information is needed about multisystem trauma (n=693, 49%), severe head injury (n=615, 43%), and meningitis (n=559, 39%). Health care professionals preferred to receive child health information through professional development opportunities (n=1,131, 80%) and printed summaries (n=885, 63%). Conclusion By understanding health care professionals’ information seeking behaviour, information needs, and information preferences, knowledge synthesis and knowledge translation initiatives can be targeted to improve pediatric emergency care. The findings from this study will inform the following two phases of the TREKK initiative to bridge the research-practice gap in Canadian general EDs.

Pediatric information seeking behaviour, information needs, and information preferences of health care professionals in general emergency departments: Results from the Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids (TREKK) Needs Assessment.

A questionnaire designed to study the information seeking behavior of professional nurses was mailed to 600 occupational health nurses who work and reside in New York State. A 28% response rate (165 usable replies) was obtained. Results indicated respondents most need to know about government regulations relating to health care, new developments in their area of specialization, drug information, and the psychological aspects of disease. The respondents most frequently looked to peers and colleagues in their agency, personal files and books, and professional organizations as important sources of information. Whereas respondents were less apt to rely on the Internet, MEDLINE, or the hospital library as sources of information used for professional purposes, 38.8% did report they frequently used the Internet to seek health related information. Also, the majority of respondents (65%) indicated interest in continuing education, if it were available, in using the Internet to access health related information. The present study suggests professional nursing organizations have an opportunity to meet members' needs by expediting members' efforts to access and evaluate information using emerging information technologies.

As a nation, we are currently experiencing a moment of racial reckoning, where issues of racial injustice, diversity, and educational inequality are debated. Literature offers a documentary source of evidence that informs the historical record. Children’s literature reveals our conceptions of social class, race, and the role of education in a given historical period. Scholars like Amanda Gailey at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln study changes in how Blacks are represented in children’s literature. Historically, children’s literature has avoided or neglected representations of Blacks, except as literary stereotypes.
