Deep learning in multimodal remote sensing data fusion: A comprehensive review

Obtaining accurate, precise and timely spatial information on the distribution and dynamics of urban green space is crucial in understanding livability of the cities and urban dwellers. Inspired from the importance of spatial information in planning urban lives, and availability of state-of-the-art remote sensing data and technologies in open access forms, in this work, we develop a simple three-level hierarchical mapping of urban green space with multiple usability to various stakeholders. We utilize the established Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) threshold on Sentinel-2A Earth Observation image data to classify the urban vegetation of each Victorian Local Government Area (LGA). Firstly, we categorize each LGA region into two broad classes as vegetation and non-vegetation; secondly, we further categorize the vegetation regions of each LGA into two sub-classes as shrub (including grassland) and trees; thirdly, for both shrub and trees classes, we further classify them as stressed and healthy. We not only map the urban vegetation in hierarchy but also develop Urban Green Space Index (UGSI) and Per Capita Green Space (PCGS) for the Victorian Local Government Areas (LGAs) to provide insights on the association of demography with urban green infrastructure using urban spatial analytics. To show the efficacy of the applied method, we evaluate our results using a Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform across different NDVI threshold ranges. The evaluation result shows that our method produces excellent performance metrics such as mean precision, recall, f-score and accuracy. In addition to this, we also prepare a recent Sentinel-2A dataset and derived products of urban green space coverage of the Victorian LGAs that are useful for multiple stakeholders ranging from bushfire modellers to biodiversity conservationists in contributing to sustainable and resilient urban lives.

Multi-view learning for hyperspectral image classification: An overview

We are currently living in the era of big data. The volume of collected or archived geospatial data for land use and land cover (LULC) mapping including remotely sensed satellite imagery and auxiliary geospatial datasets is increasing. Innovative machine learning, deep learning algorithms, and cutting-edge cloud computing have also recently been developed. While new opportunities are provided by these geospatial big data and advanced computer technologies for LULC mapping, challenges also emerge for LULC mapping from using these geospatial big data. This article summarizes the review studies and research progress in remote sensing, machine learning, deep learning, and geospatial big data for LULC mapping since 2015. We identified the opportunities, challenges, and future directions of using geospatial big data for LULC mapping. More research needs to be performed for improved LULC mapping at large scales.

Land Use and Land Cover Mapping in the Era of Big Data

The complexity and diversity of buildings make it challenging to extract low-level and high-level features with strong feature representation by using deep neural networks in building extraction tasks. Meanwhile, deep neural network-based methods have many network parameters, which take up a lot of memory and time in training and testing. We propose a novel fully convolutional neural network called the Context Feature Enhancement Network (CFENet) to address these issues. CFENet comprises three modules: the spatial fusion module, the focus enhancement module, and the feature decoder module. First, the spatial fusion module aggregates the spatial information of low-level features to obtain buildings’ outline and edge information. Secondly, the focus enhancement module fully aggregates the semantic information of high-level features to filter the information of building-related attribute categories. Finally, the feature decoder module decodes the output of the above two modules to segment the buildings more accurately. In a series of experiments on the WHU Building Dataset and the Massachusetts Building Dataset, our CFENet balances efficiency and accuracy compared to the other four methods we compared, and achieves optimality on all five evaluation metrics: PA, PC, F1, IoU, and FWIoU. This indicates that CFENet can effectively enhance and fuse buildings’ low-level and high-level features, improving building extraction accuracy.

A Context Feature Enhancement Network for Building Extraction from High-Resolution Remote Sensing Imagery

Rapid technological advances in airborne hyperspectral and lidar systems paved the way for using machine learning algorithms to map urban environments. Both hyperspectral and lidar systems can discriminate among many significant urban structures and materials properties, which are not recognizable by applying conventional RGB cameras. In most recent years, the fusion of hyperspectral and lidar sensors has overcome challenges related to the limits of active and passive remote sensing systems, providing promising results in urban land cover classification. This paper presents principles and key features for airborne hyperspectral imaging, lidar, and the fusion of those, as well as applications of these for urban land cover classification. In addition, machine learning and deep learning classification algorithms suitable for classifying individual urban classes such as buildings, vegetation, and roads have been reviewed, focusing on extracted features critical for classification of urban surfaces, transferability, dimensionality, and computational expense.
