TL;DR: In this single institution, retrospective study, the high volume of cases appears to show that DL is a reliable tool for detecting injury and avoiding potential negative or non-therapeutic laparotomies, and the high rate of conversion to open exploration suggests that its utility for therapeutic intervention warrants further study.

TL;DR: There is significant variation in perception and practice regarding the level of review for prospective observational studies and whether informed consent is necessary, and future interdisciplinary efforts between researchers and IRBs should occur to better standardize local IRB efforts.
