The VoiceBot: a voice controlled robot arm
Brandi House,Jonathan Malkin,Jeff A. Bilmes +2 more
- 04 Apr 2009
TL;DR: Results show that it is indeed possible for a user to learn to effectively manipulate real-world objects with a robotic arm using only non-verbal voice as a control mechanism.

The Vocal Joystick: Evaluation of voice-based cursor control techniques for assistive technology
TL;DR: The Vocal Joystick, with its ease of use, minimal setup requirement, and controllability, offers promise for providing an efficient method for cursor control and other forms of continuous input for individuals with motor impairments.

Ratio semi-definite classifiers
Jonathan Malkin,Jeff A. Bilmes +1 more
- 12 May 2008
TL;DR: A novel classification model that is formulated as a ratio of semi-definite polynomials that can achieve accuracies comparable with state-of-the-art techniques such as multi-layer perceptrons, but does not posses the overconfident bias often found in models based on ratios of exponentials.

On the semi-supervised learning of multi-layered perceptrons.
Jonathan Malkin,Amarnag Subramanya,Jeff A. Bilmes +2 more
- 06 Sep 2009
TL;DR: A novel approach for training a multi-layered perceptron (MLP) in a semi-supervised fashion that balances training set accuracy with fidelity to a graph-based manifold over all points and favors smoothness via an entropy regularizer over classifier outputs as well as straightforward `2 regularization.

Energy and loudness for speed control in the vocal joystick
Jonathan Malkin,Xiao Li,Jeff A. Bilmes +2 more
- 01 Jan 2005
TL;DR: It is found that loudness is an effective mechanism to control mouse cursor movement speed when mapping vocalic gestures to spatial position.
