Biochar, soil and land-use interactions that reduce nitrate leaching and N2O emissions: A meta-analysis.

The achievement of structural color has shown advantages in large-gamut, high-saturation, high-brightness, and high-resolution. While a large number of plasmonic/dielectric nanostructures have been developed for structural color, the previous approaches fail to match all the above criterion simultaneously. Herein we utilize the Si metasurface to demonstrate an all-in-one solution for structural color. Due to the intrinsic material loss, the conventional Si metasurfaces only have a broadband reflection and a small gamut of 78% of sRGB. Once they are combined with a refractive index matching layer, the reflection bandwidth and the background reflection are both reduced, improving the brightness and the color purity significantly. Consequently, the experimentally demonstrated gamut has been increased to around 181.8% of sRGB, 135.6% of Adobe RGB, and 97.2% of Rec.2020. Meanwhile, high refractive index of silicon preserves the distinct color in a pixel with 2 × 2 array of nanodisks, giving a diffraction-limit resolution. Here, the authors fabricate a metasurface with high brightness and large gamut structured colors by combining a silicon metasurface with a refractive index matching layer. The experimentally demonstrated gamut is 181.8% of sRGB, 135.6% of Adobe RGB, and 97.2% of Rec.2020.

In recent decades, academia has elaborated a wide range of technological solutions to recover water, energy, fertiliser and other products from municipal wastewater treatment plants. Drivers for this work range from low resource recovery potential and cost effectiveness, to the high energy demands and large environmental footprints of current treatment-plant designs. However, only a few technologies have been implemented and a shift from wastewater treatment plants towards water resource facilities still seems far away. This critical review aims to inform decision-makers in water management utilities about the vast technical possibilities and market supply potentials, as well as the bottlenecks, related to the design or redesign of a municipal wastewater treatment process from a resource recovery perspective. Information and data have been extracted from literature to provide a holistic overview of this growing research field. First, reviewed data is used to calculate the potential of 11 resources recoverable from municipal wastewater treatment plants to supply national resource consumption. Depending on the resource, the supply potential may vary greatly. Second, resource recovery technologies investigated in academia are reviewed comprehensively and critically. The third section of the review identifies nine non-technical bottlenecks mentioned in literature that have to be overcome to successfully implement these technologies into wastewater treatment process designs. The bottlenecks are related to economics and value chain development, environment and health, and society and policy issues. Considering market potentials, technological innovations, and addressing potential bottlenecks early in the planning and process design phase, may facilitate the design and integration of water resource facilities and contribute to more circular urban water management practices.

A critical review of resource recovery from municipal wastewater treatment plants – market supply potentials, technologies and bottlenecks

Thermal energy harvesting technologies based on composite phase change materials (PCMs) are capable of harvesting tremendous amounts of thermal energy via isothermal phase transitions, thus showing enormous potential in the design of state-of-the-art renewable energy infrastructure. Great progress has been recently made in terms of enhancing the thermal energy storage capability, transfer rate, conversion efficiency and utilization of composite PCMs. Although there are some recent reviews on composite PCMs, they are mainly concentrated on the thermal transfer enhancement and conventional utilization of PCMs. There are few systematic reviews concerning optimization strategies of PCM for thermal energy conversion. In particular, advanced multifunctional utilization of PCMs is still in its infancy. Herein, we systematically summarize the optimization strategies and mechanisms of recently reported composite PCMs for thermal energy storage, thermal transfer, energy conversion (solar-to-thermal, electro-to-thermal and magnetic-to-thermal conversion) and advanced utilization (fluorescence emission, infrared stealth technologies, drug release systems, thermotherapy and thermal protection), including some novel supporting materials (BN nanosheets and metal organic frameworks (MOFs)). Simultaneously, we provide in-depth and constructive insights into the correlations between the structural optimization strategies and thermal performances of composite PCMs. Finally, future research trends, alternative strategies and prospects are also highlighted according to up-to-date optimization strategies.

Optimization strategies of composite phase change materials for thermal energy storage, transfer, conversion and utilization

Wearable devices are drawing increasing attention in both academia and industry in that they can offer unprecedented information related to human health in real-time and human–machine interactions, which is expected to enable a paradigm shift in the digital world. For this shift to occur, green and sustainable energy technology for powering flexible wearable devices is a roadblock. This paper is dedicated to reviewing cutting-edge wearable power generation methodologies, for which we discuss their pros and cons, underlying physics, and general design/evaluation criteria. Sensor types, materials, processing technology, power consumption, and methods of testing the stretchability and flexibility of wearable devices are also summarized. Based on application scenarios in healthcare, industrial inspection, structural monitoring, armed forces and consumer electronics, an integrated system architecture of wearable, flexible systems is presented. Finally, future perspectives of wearable technologies are outlined by covering the aspects of all-in-one printable wearable electronics, fiber and textile electronics, self-powered self-awareness wearable systems, hybrid-integrated Systems on a Chip (SoC) for flexible electronics, and Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled self-contained systems towards full life cycle monitoring.

Power generation for wearable systems

The processes controlling advance and retreat of outlet glaciers in fjords draining the Greenland Ice Sheet remain poorly known, undermining assessments of their dynamics and associated sea-level rise in a warming climate. Mass loss of the Greenland Ice Sheet has increased six-fold over the last four decades, with discharge and melt from outlet glaciers comprising key components of this loss. Here we acquired oceanographic data and multibeam bathymetry in the previously uncharted Sherard Osborn Fjord in northwest Greenland where Ryder Glacier drains into the Arctic Ocean. Our data show that warmer subsurface water of Atlantic origin enters the fjord, but Ryder Glacier’s floating tongue at its present location is partly protected from the inflow by a bathymetric sill located in the innermost fjord. This reduces under-ice melting of the glacier, providing insight into Ryder Glacier’s dynamics and its vulnerability to inflow of Atlantic warmer water. A bathymetric sill in Sherard Osborn Fjord, northwest Greenland shields Ryder Glacier from melting by warm Atlantic water found at the bottom of the fjord, according to high-resolution bathymetric mapping and oceanographic data.

Record-high air temperatures were observed over Greenland in the summer of 2019 and melting of the northern Greenland Ice Sheet was particularly extensive. Here we show, through direct measurements, that near surface ocean temperatures in Sherard Osborn Fjord, northern Greenland, reached 4 °C in August 2019, while in the neighboring Petermann Fjord, they never exceeded 0 °C. We show that this disparity in temperature between the two fjords occurred because thick multi-year sea ice at the entrance of Sherard Osborn Fjord trapped the surface waters inside the fjord, which led to the formation of a warm and fresh surface layer. These results suggest that the presence of multi-year sea ice increases the sensitivity of Greenland fjords abutting the Arctic Ocean to climate warming, with potential consequences for the long-term stability of the northern sector of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Much higher surface temperatures in a north Greenland fjord, compared to a neighbouring fjord, during high air temperatures in 2019 can be explained by a sea ice dam at the fjord entrance that trapped a buoyant surface layer, suggests an analysis of hydrographic observations.
