Dispersion analysis of the spectral element method using a triangular mesh

When a natural or human disaster occurs, time is critical and often of vital importance. Data from the incident area containing the information to guide search and rescue (SAR) operations and improve intervention effectiveness should be collected as quickly as possible and with the highest accuracy possible. Nowadays, rescuers are assisted by different robots able to fly, climb or crawl, and with different sensors and wireless communication means. However, the heterogeneity of devices and data together with the strong low-delay requirements cause these technologies not yet to be used at their highest potential. Cloud and Edge technologies have shown the capability to offer support to the Internet of Things (IoT), complementing it with additional resources and functionalities. Nonetheless, building a continuum from the IoT to the edge and to the cloud is still an open challenge. SAR operations would benefit strongly from such a continuum. Distributed applications and advanced resource orchestration solutions over the continuum in combination with proper software stacks reaching out to the edge of the network may enhance the response time and effective intervention for SAR operation. The challenges for SAR operations, the technologies, and solutions for the cloud-to-edge-to-IoT continuum will be discussed in this paper.

\n The proliferation of nuclear tests is a problem that threatens the safety and health of everybody. In order to tackle this problem, the UN is promoting the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which includes protocols for monitoring and On-Site Inspections (OSI). The purpose of OSI is to verify if a nuclear test has been carried out by identifying with a geophysical technique the presence of a cavern, hole or some device that indicates the violation of the treaty. In this context, it is desirable to be able to use exploration-seismology techniques to detect caverns created by an underground nuclear explosion. However, there is scarce information about the seismic signature of this type of cavern. We present the results of elastic wave propagation simulations, in the time domain, with a cavern created by an underground nuclear explosion. The wave equation is solved using the spectral element method with 4th order basis functions and quadrilateral elements. We show the results for models with cavities and caverns corresponding to explosions of 1, 20 and 100 kilotons, and obtain seismic traces in which we can observe the effect of the structures. We conclude that caverns created by nuclear explosions can be detected using seismic data and distinguished from caves because they behave like two concentric diffractor bodies, as opposed to caves-like diffractors.

The idea of the IOT started way back in 1982 when a bending machine is connected to the internet, then to the concept of Mark Weiser in 1992, then RFID, and so on. A detailed evolution of the IOT and how it was transforming is given. Due to the wide embracement of IOT by industries and home users, it has become the cornerstone of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) market. The market value of the IOT was worth <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">${\$}1.90$ </tex-math></inline-formula> billion in 2018; <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">${\$}25$ </tex-math></inline-formula> billion in 2020; <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">${\$}925.2$ </tex-math></inline-formula> billion as at 2023; while it is forecasted to hit <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">${\$}6$ </tex-math></inline-formula> trillion in 2025 at 15.12% growing rate. This work presented some major technologies integrated with the IOT to achieve a certain goal and improve an existing system, the capability of IOT to create smart applications is demonstrated and some major distinctions between IOT & the Internet were highlighted.

High-order finite element methods for seismic wave propagation

This work studies and defines the problem of providing extensive and opportunistic Edge AI-based area coverage in smart city application scenarios, by researching and determining the optimal configuration of sensing and computational resources for minimizing the environmental/technology footprint of the solution. A typical smart city computing continuum consists of statically installed multimodal sensing Internet-of-Things (IoT) nodes at various city locations, accompanied by interconnected computational Cloud/Edge/IoT nodes. This paper presents Optimal Trustworthy EdgeAI (OTE), an entirely novel research pipeline, that complements existing smart city infrastructure with intelligent drone Edge/IoT nodes (in the form of modularly equipped unmanned aerial vehicles), capable of autonomous repositioning according to individual/collective sensing and coverage criteria. Thereby, we envisage the emerging cutting-edge technologies of trustworthy sensing, perceiving, modelling technologies for predicting the behavior of moving targets (e.g., citizens/vehicles/objects), understanding natural phenomena (e.g., sea wave motion, urban flora/fauna, biodiversity) in order to anticipate events (people's bad habits, environmental changes), by exploiting novel continuous data processing services across the whole span of the enhanced Cloud-Edge-IoT computing continuum.
