Analyzing High Resolution Topography for Advancing the Understanding of Mass and Energy Transfer Through Landscapes: A Review

Mobile LiDAR technology is currently one of the attractive topics in the fields of remote sensing and laser scanning. Mobile LiDAR enables a rapid collection of enormous volumes of highly dense, irregularly distributed, accurate geo-referenced data, in the form of three-dimensional (3D) point clouds. This technology has been gaining popularity in the recognition of roads and road-scene objects. A thorough review of available literature is conducted to inform the advancements in mobile LiDAR technologies and their applications in road information inventory. The literature review starts with a brief overview of mobile LiDAR technology, including system components, direct geo-referencing, data error analysis and geometrical accuracy validation. Use of mobile LiDAR in road information inventory: a review

Terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) allow large and complex landforms to be rapidly surveyed at previously unattainable point densities. Many change detection methods have been employed to make use of these rich data sets, including cloud to mesh (C2M) comparisons and Multiscale Model to Model Cloud Comparison (M3C2). Rather than use simulated point cloud data, we utilized a 58 scan TLS survey data set of the Selawik retrogressive thaw slump (RTS) to compare C2M and M3C2. The Selawik RTS is a rapidly evolving permafrost degradation feature in northwest Alaska that presents challenging survey conditions and a unique opportunity to compare change detection methods in a difficult surveying environment. Additionally, this study considers several error analysis techniques, investigates the spatial variability of topographic change across the feature and explores visualization techniques that enable the analysis of this spatiotemporal data set. C2M reports a higher magnitude of topographic change over short periods of time ( 12 h) and reports a lower magnitude of topographic change over long periods of time ( four weeks) when compared to M3C2. We found that M3C2 provides a better accounting of the sources of uncertainty in TLS change detection than C2M, because it considers the uncertainty due to surface roughness and scan registration. We also found that localized areas of the RTS do not always approximate the overall retreat of the feature and show considerable spatial variability during inclement weather; however, when averaged together, the spatial subsets approximate the retreat of the entire feature. Comparing Two Methods of Surface Change Detection on an Evolving Thermokarst Using High-Temporal-Frequency Terrestrial Laser Scanning, Selawik River, Alaska

The paper investigates the performances of two portable mobile mapping systems (MMSs), the handheld GeoSLAM ZEB-REVO and Leica Pegasus:Backpack, in two typical user-case scenarios: an indoor two-floors building and an outdoor open city square. The indoor experiment is characterized by smooth and homogenous surfaces and reference measurements are acquired with a time-of-flight (ToF) phase-shift laser scanner. The noise of the two MMSs is estimated through the fitting of geometric primitives on simple constructive elements, such as horizontal and vertical planes and cylindrical columns. Length measurement errors on different distances measured on the acquired point clouds are also reported. The outdoor tests are compared against a MMSs mounted on a car and a robust statistical analysis, entailing the estimation of both standard Gaussian and non-parametric estimators, is presented to assess the accuracy potential of both portable systems.

Investigation of indoor and outdoor performance of two portable mobile mapping systems

We evaluate the performance of full waveform LiDAR decomposition algorithms with a high-resolution single band airborne LiDAR bathymetry system in shallow rivers. A continuous wavelet transformation (CWT) is proposed and applied in two fluvial environments, and the results are compared to existing echo retrieval methods. LiDAR water depths are also compared to independent field measurements. In both clear and turbid water, the CWT algorithm outperforms the other methods if only green LiDAR observations are available. However, both the definition of the water surface, and the turbidity of the water significantly influence the performance of the LiDAR bathymetry observations. The results suggest that there is no single best full waveform processing algorithm for all bathymetric situations. Overall, the optimal processing strategies resulted in a determination of water depths with a 6 cm mean at 14 cm standard deviation for clear water, and a 16 cm mean and 27 cm standard deviation in more turbid water.

Performance Assessment of High Resolution Airborne Full Waveform LiDAR for Shallow River Bathymetry

We describe a prototype compact mobile laser scanning system that may be operated from a backpack or unmanned aerial vehicle. The system is small, self-contained, relatively inexpensive, and easy to deploy. A description of system components is presented, along with the initial calibration of the multi-sensor platform. The first field tests of the system, both in backpack mode and mounted on a helium balloon for real-world applications are presented. For both field tests, the acquired kinematic LiDAR data are compared with highly accurate static terrestrial laser scanning point clouds. These initial results show that the vertical accuracy of the point cloud for the prototype system is approximately 4 cm (1σ) in balloon mode, and 3 cm (1σ) in backpack mode while horizontal accuracy was approximately 17 cm (1σ) for the balloon tests. Results from selected study areas on the Sacramento River Delta and San Andreas Fault in California demonstrate system performance, deployment agility and flexibility, and potential for operational production of high density and highly accurate point cloud data. Cost and production rate trade-offs place this system in the niche between existing airborne and tripod mounted LiDAR systems.
