Orientation: Nursing is a noble profession but not always an easy job. Work overload, few resources, limited promotion and development opportunities have a negative impact on the sustainability of the profession. Research purpose: The primary objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between organisational commitment, work engagement and meaning of work amongst nursing staff at various hospitals. Motivation for study: It is important to understand how to optimise the work experience of nursing staff in order to ensure a committed and engaged workforce. Research design, approach and method: A survey design with a cluster sample ( n = 199) was used. The Organisational Commitment Questionnaire, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, Work-Life Questionnaire and a biographical questionnaire were administered. Main findings: The majority of the scales showed acceptable reliability. Results indicated that the majority of nursing staff view their work as either a job or a calling. This impacts the organisation in the sense that viewing work as a calling predicts 19% of the variance in organisational commitment and 30% of the variance in work engagement. Practical/managerial implications: Viewing work as a calling will accompany higher levels of engagement and commitment to the organisation. Nurses who feel that they make a meaningful contribution to the hospital are more inclined to stay in the organisation. Contribution/value-add: Strategies can be put in place to focus on experiencing work as a calling, rather than a job. Enhancing this experience and creating awareness could lead to higher levels of organisational commitment and work engagement.

This study examines the relationship between stress and job satisfaction on the turnover intention among academic staff of private higher educational institutions (HEIs) in Malaysia. A total of 308 private HEIs academic staff have participated through multistage cluster sampling. The results showed a significant positive relationship between stress and turnover intention and a significant negative relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention. Also, stress and job satisfaction predicted the turnover intention among academic staff in private HEIs. The study provides a clearer understanding and reference to employers about the issue of retrenchment, stress, and job satisfaction among the academic staff of private HEIs in Malaysia. Appropriate strategies can be taken by the organisations involved. For employees, appropriate initiatives can address the causes of turnover intention, such as stress and job satisfaction. Good handling from all parties can prevent the occurrence of retrenchment and further improve the individuals' well-being. 

Determinants of Turnover Intentions of Malaysian Academicians

This study aims to examine the effect of work meaning on the organizational commitment and job engagement as a mediator. Second, the influence of the meaning of work on the turnover intention. The findings show that the meaning of work affects job engagement, and job engagement mediate the effect of the meaning of work organizational commitment. The next finding shows that the meaning of work has an influence on the turnover intention, the higher the meaning of work, the lower the turnover intention. This article presents a conceptual and propositional design model for broadening the understanding and knowledge of the meaning of work, job engagement, organizational commitment and turnover intentions in hospital nurses. This article is hoped to be able to assist hospitals in increasing nurse organizational commitment and reducing the turnover intention that has occurred so far. This conceptual model is expected to provide an overview and reference for further research in the future.
