Leaf proteome responses of Arabidopsis thaliana exposed to mild cadmium stress.
Brahim Semane,Joke Dupae,Ann Cuypers,Jean-Paul Noben,Marjo Tuomainen,Arja Tervahauta,Sirpa Kärenlampi,Frank Van Belleghem,Karen Smeets,Jaco Vangronsveld +9 more
TL;DR: The leaf proteome of 3-week-old Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings exposed for 1 week to low, environmentally realistic Cd concentrations was investigated and a working model is proposed to provide greater insight into the mechanisms induced on Cd exposure.

Endophytic bacteria improve phytoremediation of Ni and TCE co-contamination.
Nele Weyens,Sarah Croes,Joke Dupae,Lee A. Newman,Daniel van der Lelie,Robert Carleer,Jaco Vangronsveld +6 more
TL;DR: Investigating if engineered endophytes can improve phytoremediation of co-contaminations by organic pollutants and toxic metals found decreased Ni and TCE phytotoxicity, as measured by 30% increased root biomass and up to 50% decreased activities of enzymes involved in anti-oxidative defence in the roots.

Short rotation coppice culture of willows and poplars as energy crops on metal contaminated agricultural soils.
Ann Ruttens,Jana Boulet,Nele Weyens,Karen Smeets,Kristin Adriaensen,Erik Meers,Stijn Van Slycken,Filip Tack,Linda Meiresonne,Theo Thewys,Nele Witters,Robert Carleer,Joke Dupae,Jaco Vangronsveld +13 more
TL;DR: It is calculated that for phytoextraction in this particular case it would take at least 36 years to reach the legal threshold values for cadmium, but in combination with production of feedstock for bioenergy processes, this type of land use can offer an alternative income for local farmers.

Potential of the TCE-degrading endophyte Pseudomonas putida W619-TCE to improve plant growth and reduce TCE phytotoxicity and evapotranspiration in poplar cuttings.
Nele Weyens,Sascha Truyens,Joke Dupae,Lee A. Newman,Safiyh Taghavi,Daniel van der Lelie,Robert Carleer,Jaco Vangronsveld +7 more
TL;DR: Here, inoculation with P. putida W619-TCE had a less pronounced positive effect on plant growth and TCE phytotoxicity, but resulted in strongly reduced amounts of TCE in leaves and roots of plants exposed to 400 mg l(-1) TCE, accompanied by a lowered evapotranspiration of T CE.

Endophytes and their potential to deal with co-contamination of organic contaminants (toluene) and toxic metals (nickel) during phytoremediation.
Nele Weyens,Sascha Truyens,Eline Saenen,Jana Boulet,Joke Dupae,Safiyh Taghavi,Daniel van der Lelie,Robert Carleer,Jaco Vangronsveld +8 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that engineered endophytes have the potential to assist their host plant to deal with co-contamination of toxic metals and organic contaminants during phytoremediation.
