Nursing retention is a major challenge globally. Ongoing workforce instability across countries underscores the need to understand the factors influencing turnover and nursing retention. Trust is a crucial element in managing workplace relationships between nurse managers and nurses. Existing studies have shown the direct impact of trust on employees’ intention to leave their job but have not explored the effects of potential mediators such as organizational commitment. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of trust in the leader on nurses’ intention to leave their job through the mediation of organizational commitment. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Italy. A convenience sample of 1853 nurses completed a self-report survey. The study tested a hypothesis-based mediation model using structural equation modeling, which showed good fit indices. The results indicated that trust in the leader had a significant impact on nurses’ intention to leave, and this relationship was partially mediated by organizational commitment. Nurses who trust their leader are more likely to demonstrate higher levels of organizational commitment, resulting in a lower intention to leave their job. Furthermore, organizational commitment and trust emerge as critical factors in reducing nurses’ intention to leave their current positions. Therefore, managers can reduce nurses’ intention to leave by building trustful relationships that enhance organizational commitment.This study was not registered. 

Trust in the Leader, Organizational Commitment, and Nurses’ Intention to Leave—Insights from a Nationwide Study Using Structural Equation Modeling

ABSTRACT On 27 February 2021, Creighton University men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott asked his team “to stay on the plantation.” This essay argues that by quarantining the “the plantation’s” enunciation within an interpersonal, affective space and seizing the opportunity to recuperate intercollegiate athletics through the symbolic terrain of “diversity,” McDermott’s apology and Creighton’s response foreclosed the critical viewpoint that the plantation might otherwise represent. Together, they functioned to remind us that racial justice is a matter of communicative behavior and need not disrupt the flow of wealth in college sports from Black athletes to predominantly white institutions and their stakeholders.

Accidentally telling the truth: racial capitalism on the college sports plantation

ABSTRACT The internalization, distribution, explanation, and action (IDEA) model aids message designers in crafting effective instructional risk and crisis messages. This study applies the IDEA model to a new context (emergency notification systems on college campuses) using a different message length (short-written form). An experiment (N = 124) using manipulation checks revealed that internalization, explanation, and action can be successfully manipulated in short-written form. The IDEA message did not result in greater perceived response efficacy at posttest, but trended higher on learning outcomes than the standard and control conditions, although not significantly. Limitations and implications are discussed.

Designing Instructional Crisis Messages for College Emergency Notification Systems: A Test of the IDEA Model

This essay emerged out of class discussion in a Ph.D. seminar on Instructional Communication (IC). As the ﬁ rst author and professor in this course, I have encouraged my students (the remaining authors) to connect IC to their areas of emphasis and to con-sider the myriad ways IC research could contribute to learning outcomes in these areas. In drafting their contributions to this essay, one of the student authors wrote, “ If instructional communication (IC) is de ﬁ ned as ‘ the study of the human communication process across all learning situations independent of subject matter, grade level, or the learning environment ’ (Myers et al., 2016, p. 13), then why are so many scholars still tied to their classroom podiums? ” We present an argument for how IC scholars can build on existing research to step out from behind their podiums through consulting and outreach in ﬁ ve distinct contexts.

The contribution of instructional communication research to teaching–learning beyond the classroom

Each year, thousands of athletes suffer from sport-related pain and injury, with many of these individuals reporting playing through this pain or injury. In order to garner a better understanding as to how youth athletes view these behaviors, as well as the communicative factors that may play a part in the formation of these beliefs, college student participants responded to an online open-ended questionnaire based on the theory of planned behavior. Participants’ (N = 64) retrospective responses were analyzed according to thematic analysis, and results revealed several distinct themes related to their held behavioral, normative, and control beliefs. This research furthers the study of playing through pain and injury in youth athletes, helping to shine a light on some of the motivating forces behind these beliefs and behaviors, as well as indicating several potential paths for the future of this research.

A Qualitative Analysis of Playing Through Pain and Injury: Using the Theory of Planned Behavior to Understand the Communicated Sport Ethic Among Former Youth Athletes

Leader-member exchange theory (LMX) has proliferated as a framework for understanding coach-athlete interactions, as the exchanges of communicative resources greatly influence athletes’ sporting experiences. The current study uses coaches’ perceptions of task and social determinants of LMX to reveal comparative insights about forming low- and high-quality exchanges. Data collected from 380 coaches, spanning 14 different sports, at 160 high schools indicated that high-quality exchanges are solely determined by athletes’ abilities. In contrast, low-quality exchanges are determined by coaches’ negative affect towards athletes, and to a lesser extent, athletes’ poor performances and lack of competitiveness. Findings contribute to sports communication literature by examining LMX from coaches’ perspectives and identifying the unique determinants of various groupings within LMX. Both coaches and athletes may find utility in the current findings as they look to create meaningful relationships and positive sporting experiences.

Task and Social Determinants of Coaches’ Reports of Leader-Member Exchange

ABSTRACT The study of sport fandom has increased throughout the years as sport is often viewed as a microcosm of the larger society. To date, sports and social justice movements are extensively intertwined, and now, simply rooting for a team may indicate one’s personal stance on societal issues. Therefore, this study sought to understand how one’s fandom, knowledge of systematic racism, systemic racism, and BLM misconceptions relates to perceptions of athlete activism. Results indicate that fans (N = 153) who watch for entertainment are the most supportive of athlete’s using their platforms, whereas those who believe that athletes should “shut up and dribble” possess a lesser understanding of systematic and systemic racism and higher levels of BLM misunderstanding.
