broad proposition, however, this ‘rank and filist’ assumption needs further justification than is offered in the book. A second criticism is that Cloud perhaps overstates her case, suggesting that the 1995 contract rejection represented a moment of ‘profound class consciousness’ and ‘unprecedented moment of rank-and-file self-determination’. Although the militancy of the strike undoubtedly impresses, the suggestion that it represents a realisation of transcending working class interests rather than, more simply, a period of disaffection from a particular employer isn’t persuasive enough. The reader is left with the suspicion that the book works better as a depiction of the problems faced by union reformers, than an inspirational example of transformation. One of Cloud’s major themes is the dilemma inherent in the concept of ‘loyal opposition’ – the line walked by militants who must simultaneously recognise the importance of unions and their limitations. This concept is powerfully illustrated by a recurrent motif; Thomas’s deliberations over whether he would still advocate union membership at all in light of his disillusioning experiences as a reformer. These questions are reflected in the book’s main theoretical contribution, which is rooted in Cloud’s own discipline of communication studies. Drawing on Marxist thought, it is argued that ‘the gaps and contradictions between lived experience of exploitation and the discourses that justify or overlook that exploitation are resources for critique and action’ (p. 176). This provides a theoretical backdrop to Cloud’s central argument; that it is only through an enduring and militant organisational presence at shop-floor level, through which company discourses masking exploitation can be exposed, that radical unionism can advance. As a contribution to labour relations literature ‘We Are The Union’ is valuable for its rich empirical data, as well as provocative in its forthright denunciation of mainstream union leaderships. As noted above, the reader may question the optimism with which the book discusses rank-and-file militancy. Nonetheless, it represents forceful advocacy for greater union democracy, and an important depiction of the experiences of a group of dedicated and often courageous labour activists.

Investigating The Relationship Of Organizational Justice

A number of work burn-out strategies are being churned out by scholars. However, the most effective either by reason of culture diversity or non-clarity of thought, has not been reached. Although, the most rewarding strategy offered has been that of external prevention. The paper then argues that the most underlying cause of work place burn out is the intrinsic and as such, should earn more of the attention of the organizations. In other words, internal problem of the employee is the major cause for his burn out. The paper then surveyed 50 workers from 10 firms in Obio/Akpor Local Government area of Rivers State. Concern was to find out between external and intrinsic problems the most effective strategy in dealing with workers' burn out. Based on intrinsic arid self-determination theory, conclusion reached was that, out of the firms surveyed, eight employed the intrinsic approach wherein they first of all train their workers on how to handle and manage themselves internally, and not to personally depend on physical rewards as a means to handle burn out. The paper would then employed Likert's method in the analysis of result seeing that it was on the attitudinal response of workers on their everyday burn out.

Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between procedural justice and organizational citizenship behaviour in Deposit Money Banks in Rivers State. The effects of procedural justice was tested on organizational citizenship behaviour measures such as altruism and sportsmanship.Methodology: The study adopted a cross sectional survey design and data was generated from 193 respondents from the target Deposit Money Banks in Rivers State. As a quantitative study, the primary data collection instrument for the study was the structured questionnaire. The test for the reliability for the instrument was carried out using the Cronbach alpha reliability instrument with a reliability threshold of 0.70. The Analysis comprised of the univariate (single variable assessments) bivariate (test for hypothetical relationships) while the bivariate analysis was carried out using the Spearman’s rank order correlation coefficient at a 0.05 level of significance.Findings: Findings from the study revealed that workplace justice significantly impacts on the measures of OCB (altruism and sportsmanship) and also organizational culture was revealed to also significantly moderate the relationship between workplace justice and organizational citizenship behaviour in Deposit Money Banks in Rivers State. Based on the findings, it was concluded that there is significant relationship between the predictor and the measures of the criterion variables.Contribution to practice and Policy: The study recommended that OCB within an organization could be significantly increased by enhancing organizational fairness, particularly procedural justice. Bank managers should first improve the procedural justice and hence increase overall levels of perceived justice by involving employees in the procedures used in making decisions and allocating rewards

This article examines the effect of collective bargaining on management contract in the hospitality industry. The data used for drawing inference was from reviewed literature. A qualitative and quantitative view of collective bargaining was taken from the dimensions of distributive bargaining, integrative bargaining, productivity bargaining and composite bargaining, whereas the management contract was seen from service and operations contract. The study adopted the stratified sampling technique in collecting its data. A total of 52 respondents were drawn from six (6) hotels in Port Harcourt. Spearman rank order correlation coefficient was the adopted statistical tool used in analyzing the collected data. The literature revealed that both the distributive and the productivity bargaining had more influence on the service contract, while the integrative and the composite bargaining had more influences on the operations contract as revealed by the statistical calculations. Therefore, the paper concluded that collective bargaining had influence on management contract.
