A diagnostic system with a handling system that has a loading bay to receive and hold a plurality of carriers. An identification device is configured to identify an identifying feature of the carriers to determine the type of contents loaded on each carrier. A transporter transports the carriers from the loading bay to a first or second location depending on the determined type of contents on each carrier. The transporter has random access to the plurality of carriers in the loading bay. A diagnostic process is conducted using the contents. A carrier, such a for reagents, has one or more holding portions, at least one of which can be moved or rotated with respect to the body of the carrier for mixing or stirring the contents of a container coupled therewith. Also, a retention member can be associated with a positioning device, such as a carousel, to lock and unlock the carrier with respect thereto.

A robotic device transports a carrier with the samples to a positioner that moves the tubes within the carrier into an aspiration position. The system also includes a sample output adapted to receive the output vessel, and a user interface adapted to receive an input from the user to indicate the identity of the at least one sample container, and control at least one operation based on a physical property of the at least one sample container.

Open platform automated sample processing system

A handling device for samples and reagents to be used in testing in a system. Carriers of samples and reagents are loaded on a platform which detects the presence of, and proper loading of, such carriers. The carriers are moved from the platform by a transporter to a bar code reader for identification. A reagent container is rotated during reading to facilitate identification. The transporter further moves identified reagent carriers to a carousel on which the carriers automatically secured for storage awaiting use in testing. The carousel rotates, and selected reagent containers rotate on the rotating carousel, during storage.

The carrier mechanism includes a multi-position spoke-like carrier portion that is driven by a single drive shaft coupled to a gear reduction stepper motor by a coupling. The carousel drive mechanism includes a linear actuator portion and a rotary actuator portion on a common center line or axis. The linear actuator portion effects engagement and disengagement of the rotary actuator portion with a properly positioned carousel, and includes a linear actuator stepper motor with a motor shaft attached to a lift housing. The lift housing holds the rotary actuator portion.

A sample handling mechanism (40) including a direct drive carrier for positioning multiple trays or carousels (10) of sample vials and a direct drive carousel handling mechanism that eliminates pulleys and belts and the problems associated therewith. The carousels (10) handled by the sample handling mechanism (40) are individually identifiable, stackable and include a viewing area for identifying and viewing the individual sample vials grouped in a respective carousel (10). The carrier mechanism (50) includes a multi-position spoke-like carrier portion (52) that is driven by a single drive shaft (56) coupled to a gear reduction stepper motor (64) by a coupling (66). The carousel drive mechanism (80) includes a linear actuator portion and a rotary actuator portion on a common center line or axis. The linear actuator portion effects engagement and disengagement of the rotary actuator portion with a properly positioned carousel, and includes a linear actuator stepper motor (82) with a motor shaft attached to a lift housing (86). The lift housing (86) holds the rotary actuator portion.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a carousel removable from a carrier part and allow a plurality of carousels to be stacked. SOLUTION: A carousel 10 which is removable from a carrier part comprises an upper part 20 and a sample positioning part 18 connected to the upper part. At the limb of the sample positioning part 18, a plurality of vial positions 12 are provided.
