Seven-membered heterocycles are essential structural moieties present in a large number of biologically active compounds. The existing methods for the formation of benzodiazepine have one or more disadvantages like expensive reagents, harsh reaction conditions, low yields, formation of by-products, and comparatively more reaction time. Therefore, chemists need to find better methodologies for the preparation of benzodiazepines in terms of environment-friendly, simplicity, and economic feasibility which is achieved utilizing molecular iodine. Although there are many examples that synthesize five- and six-membered heterocycles via iodine-catalyzed cyclization, the formation of medium ring heterocycles has not been reported much.
