Three-dimensional nonlinear static analysis of cable-stayed bridges

A numerical procedure for large deformation analysis of elastic-plastic frames is presented. The procedure is based on an Eulerian formulation, which was developed initially for elastic systems and is extended herein to include elastic-plastic effects. Local member force-deformation relationships are based on the beam-column approach and changes in member chord lengths due to axial strains and flexural bowing are taken into account. A computational technique for determining the nonlinear response is described in detail. The technique utilizes an incremental load approach with Newton-Raphson iteration to satisfy joint equilibrium equations. Numerical solutions are presented for three structures and are compared to those reported by previous investigators.

The nonlinear behavior and the ultimate strength of four plane counterstressed cable trusses and a hyperbolic paraboloid network have been studied, considering the effects of large deformations, slackening of members, and inelastic material properties. The influence of various combinations of symmetric and asymmetric load distributions on the behavior of these structures is examined, and interaction curves corresponding to the initial slackening and the ultimate strength of the structures are presented.

Strength of Cable Trusses Under Combined Loads

A numerical procedure is presented for determining the deformational response of three-dimensional suspension structures, stiffened and unstiffened, as the loading is increased from the initial state to the ultimate carrying capacity. The analysis accounts for the nonlinear stress-strain relationship of the cables and, in the case of stiffened structures, the elasto-plastic behavior of the flexural members. The equilibrium equations are based on the deformed state. The structure is assumed subjected to static concentrated loads, applied in any direction, at the joints of the stiffening framework. The effects of support movement are considered in the analysis. Numerical studies of stiffened and unstiffened structures are included.
