A method of using a plasma to build up an optical fiber preform consists in injecting hydroxyl ions in a controlled manner into the build-up silica that is deposited on the preform. The invention is applicable to the manufacture of optical fibers, in particular monomode fibers.

A graded-index multimode fiber includes a core made of silica glass, the core having a central region and an outer peripheral region, and a cladding which is provided at an outer periphery of the core. The central region contains one of germanium and phosphorus, and the outer peripheral region contains fluorine.

In the production of preforms for optical fibres, the materials of the core region (alpha) and the entire light-transmitting cladding (beta1 + beta2 + beta3) were hitherto deposited from the gas phase. The cross-section of the preforms is increased, without an increase in the deposition rate, by depositing only the materials of the core region (alpha) and, if desired, part of the light-transmitting cladding (beta1) from the gas phase and adding the remainder of the light-transmitting cladding (beta2 + beta3) in the form of tubes.

A method for preparing a material so as to exhibit second harmonic generation for optical radiation that passes through the material. The method includes a first step of providing a bulk glass comprised of substitutionally doped silica and a charge transfer dopant. The bulk glass is prepared for frequency doubling in accordance with a method that includes a step of irradiating the bulk glass with optical radiation having a first wavelength and a second wavelength, the bulk glass being irradiated for a period of time sufficient to obtain a desired amount of conversion efficiency of the first wavelength into the second wavelength. The silica is substitutionally doped with an element selected from the group consisting of Ge and Al, and the charge transfer dopant is selected from the group consisting of Ce?3+, Nd3+?, and Eu2+. In another embodiment of the invention the silica is substitutionally doped with Ge and the charge transfer dopant is comprised of naturally existing Ge defects. The bulk glass may be provided as a monolithic body, a preform, a coating, a layer, or as a film. Optical devices incorporating a bulk glass SHG converter and self-frequency doubling glass lasers are described.

Optical waveguide core compositions comprising a core containing two dopants in a silica based glass, wherein one of the dopants is titania. The core composition serves to suppress the presence of Ti+3 and to preserve refractive index profile (10, 12, 14) shape throughout the preform manufacturing process.

Single mode optical fibre for operation in the wavelength range 1.5 to 1.7 microns is made by depositing a cladding glass layer and then a core glass layer upon the bore of a silica substrate tube. The bore of the coated tube is then collapsed to form a solid cross-section optical fibre preform. The cladding glass has an index matching that of silica and either contains no oxide of phosphorus or the minimal amount to provide a low enough deposition temperature and high enough deposition rate to provide an acceptably low diffusion of hydroxyl groups from the material of the substrate tube. Optionally the deposition of the cladding may be preceded by the deposition of a diffusion barrier layer which may contain a higher proportion of oxide of phosphorus.

Single mode optical fibre for operation in the wavelength range 1.5 to 1.7 microns is made by depositing a cladding glass layer (51) and then a core glass layer (52) upon the bore of a silica substrate tube (50). The bore of the coated tube is then collapsed to form a solid cross-section optical fibre preform. The cladding glass has an index matching that of silica and either contains no oxide of phosphorus or the minimal amount to proved a low enough deposition temperature and high enough deposition rate to provide an acceptably low diffusion of hydroxyl groups from the material of the substrate tube. Optionally the deposition of the cladding may be preceded by the deposition of a diffusion barrier layer which may contain a higher proportion of oxide of phosphorus.
