Mitigating the effects of barriers to freshwater fish migrations: the Australian experience
John H. Harris,Richard T. Kingsford,William L. Peirson,Lee J. Baumgartner,Lee J. Baumgartner +4 more
TL;DR: The migratory characteristics of Australian freshwater fish are reviewed, the effects of different in-stream barriers and other habitat changes on the four classes of migratory behaviour are identified and how Australia’s highly variable hydrology presents particular challenges in mitigating fish passage barriers is noted.

Laboratory testing of an innovative tube fishway concept
John H. Harris,William L. Peirson,Brent Mefford,Richard T. Kingsford,Stefan Felder +4 more
- 02 Jan 2020
TL;DR: In this paper, effective fishways are required for restoring fish migrations and reversing worldwide declines in freshwater fish while making sustainable use of water resources, and mitigation of barrier effects at h...

A trap-and-haul fishway for upstream transfers of migrating fish at a challenging dam site
John H. Harris,David T. Roberts,Steven O’Brien,Brent Mefford,Kris S. Pitman +4 more
- 08 Nov 2019
TL;DR: The first trap-and-haul fishway was built to overcome site-related and biological challenges of providing upstream fish transfer at a 62'm dam in Australia's Northern Territory as mentioned in this paper.

Piping fish over dams
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the lifting mechanism of a tube fishway, demonstrated using numerical modelling, verified by a physical model, and demonstrate how this piped system could be scaled up, while controlling turbulence impacts on fish.
