Propulsion for CubeSats

CubeSats provide a cost effective means to perform scientific and technological studies in space. Due to their affordability, CubeSat technologies have been diversely studied and developed by educational institutions, companies and space organizations all over the world. The CubeSat technology that is surveyed in this paper is the propulsion system. A propulsion system is the primary mobility device of a spacecraft and helps with orbit modifications and attitude control. This paper provides an overview of micro-propulsion technologies that have been developed or are currently being developed for CubeSats. Some of the micro-propulsion technologies listed have also flown as secondary propulsion systems on larger spacecraft. Operating principles and key design considerations for each class of propulsion system are outlined. Finally, the performance factors of micro-propulsion systems have been summarized in terms of: first, a comparison of thrust and specific impulse for all propulsion systems; second, a comparison of power and specific impulse, as also thrust-to-power ratio and specific impulse for electric propulsion systems.

An Overview of Cube-Satellite Propulsion Technologies and Trends

As small satellites become more popular and capable, strategies to provide in-space propulsion increase in importance. Applications range from orbital changes and maintenance, attitude control and desaturation of reaction wheels to drag compensation and de-orbit at spacecraft end-of-life. Space propulsion can be enabled by chemical or electric means, each having different performance and scalability properties. The purpose of this review is to describe the working principles of space propulsion technologies proposed so far for small spacecraft. Given the size, mass, power, and operational constraints of small satellites, not all types of propulsion can be used and very few have seen actual implementation in space. Emphasis is given in those strategies that have the potential of miniaturization to be used in all classes of vehicles, down to the popular 1-L, 1-kg CubeSats and smaller.

Space Propulsion Technology for Small Spacecraft

Electric thrusters are finding increasing usage worldwide in spacecraft applications. Significant progress has been made in recent years in the modeling and performance of thermionic hollow cathodes used in flight thrusters, such as Hall and ion thrusters, or other types of plasma sources, such as for technological plasmas. The recent progress is surveyed in this paper through the discussion of six areas: hollow cathode modeling and simulation, low-current hollow cathodes, high-current hollow cathodes, heaterless hollow cathodes, new thermionic insert materials, and plasma oscillations. This includes descriptions of hollow cathode designs capable of < 1 A to over 300 A, advances in electron emitter and heating/starting technologies, and modeling and simulation of the plasma properties, thermal behavior and instabilities in the discharge. Advances in the understanding and technology in these areas and challenges that still need to be addressed and solved are discussed.

Recent progress in research and development of hollow cathodes for electric propulsion

Propulsion is a critical subsystem of many spacecraft1–4. For efficient propellant usage, electric propulsion systems based on the electrostatic acceleration of ions formed during electron impact ionization of a gas are particularly attractive5,6. At present, xenon is used almost exclusively as an ionizable propellant for space propulsion2–5. However, xenon is rare, it must be stored under high pressure and commercial production is expensive7–9. Here we demonstrate a propulsion system that uses iodine propellant and we present in-orbit results of this new technology. Diatomic iodine is stored as a solid and sublimated at low temperatures. A plasma is then produced with a radio-frequency inductive antenna, and we show that the ionization efficiency is enhanced compared with xenon. Both atomic and molecular iodine ions are accelerated by high-voltage grids to generate thrust, and a highly collimated beam can be produced with substantial iodine dissociation. The propulsion system has been successfully operated in space onboard a small satellite with manoeuvres confirmed using satellite tracking data. We anticipate that these results will accelerate the adoption of alternative propellants within the space industry and demonstrate the potential of iodine for a wide range of space missions. For example, iodine enables substantial system miniaturization and simplification, which provides small satellites and satellite constellations with new capabilities for deployment, collision avoidance, end-of-life disposal and space exploration10–14. The successful in-orbit operation of an electric space propulsion system based on iodine, rather than the more expensive and difficult-to-store xenon, is demonstrated.

Maturation of Iodine Fueled BIT-3 RF Ion Thruster and RF Neutralizer

Busek, in partnership with Morehead State University (MSU), is developing a versatile 6U CubeSat platform nicknamed “LunarCube” that can undertake missions beyond LEO. The spacecraft can host a variety of science payloads, and its mission capability is highlighted by >3km/s of delta-V maneuverability with a groundbreaking ion propulsion system heretofore unavailable to CubeSats. Salient features of this propulsion system include innovative use of solid iodine propellant and a 60W class mini RF ion thruster that is capable of 1.3mN thrust and 3250sec specific impulse (Isp). The primary objective of the LunarCube program is to support a deep space CubeSat mission to the Moon from GEO or a translunar trajectory (such as the SLS/EM-1 drop-off) and carry out a lunar science campaign as a technology demonstration of the platform. A secondary objective is to showcase that much of the spacecraft’s miniaturized avionics and power system can survive the harsh radiation environment. The LunarCube concept, especially its ion propulsion element, has received significant attention from the CubeSat user community targeting near-term lunar flights. In fact, the platform has already morphed into an EM-1 CubeSat mission known as “Lunar IceCube”, selected for flight by NASA’s Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships (NextSTEP) program.

The monopropellant community has been pursuing low-toxicity alternatives to hydrazine for the past two decades. One of such “green” monopropellants, known as AF-M315E, has caught attention of many by offering both improved performance and handling safety. A 0.5N-class, AF-M315E micro thruster was recently developed by Busek that can deliver >220sec vacuum Isp. Both steady-state and pulsed firings were demonstrated. The thruster, when cold, requires a small amount of pre-heating power to start which is no more than 12W or an equivalent of 1.6W-Hr energy input. The thruster is complemented by a novel piezoelectric microvalve that needs less than 200mW to operate and weighs a mere 67g. The valve features an all-welded, all-titanium wetted design for longterm propellant compatibility. It is rated for 1200sccm GN2 max flow and 1.5×10 -4 sccm GN2 leak rate. The valve passed environmental testing before being integrated into the thruster, and together they demonstrated a minimum impulse bit of 0.036N-sec. Busek is currently developing a 1U CubeSat propulsion system centered on the integrated 0.5N thruster and microvalve. The system is designed to be self-contained and fully loaded with propellant, which allows for simple spacecraft integration and reduced operating cost.
