An optimizing object code translation system and method perform dynamic compilation and translation of a target object code on a source operating system while performing optimization. Compilation and optimization of the target code is dynamically executed in real time. A compiler performs analysis and optimizations that improve emulation relative to template-based translation and interpretation such that a host processor which processes larger order instructions, such as 32-bit instructions, may emulate a target processor which processes smaller order instructions, such as 16-bit and 8-bit instructions. The optimizing object code translator does not require knowledge of a static program flow graph or memory locations of target instructions prior to run time. In addition, the optimizing object code translator does not require knowledge of the location of all join points into the target object code prior to execution. During program execution, a translator records branch operations. The logging of information identifies instructions and instruction join points. When a number of times a branch operation is executed exceeds a threshold, the destination of the branch becomes a seed for compilation and code portions between seeds are defined as segments. A segment may be incomplete allowing for modification or replacement to account for a new flow of program control during real time program execution.

Dynamic optimizing object code translator for architecture emulation and dynamic optimizing object code translation method

A system for secure delivery of on-demand content over broadband access networks includes a client application executing on a user's local computer system. The client application interacts with a content server on which a plurality of selectable titles are stored and further interacts with an access server which provides the network address of a title and keying data necessary for to the client process access and execute the title. The client process utilizes an installation abstraction which enables a title to be executed on the local computer system without ever being installed. The abstraction is achieved by mounting a network file system and storing a set of registry entries related to the title on the local computer system. Portions of the title are retrieved from the content server and executed by the local operating system. During title execution, requests from the local operating system are intercepted and redirected to the set of registry entries, as applicable. The times at which the client process may retrieve the title data from the content server are defined by the access server through use of an activator and token.

Method and apparatus for installation abstraction in a secure content delivery system

Provides a program translation and execution method which stores target routines (for execution by a target processor) corresponding to incompatible instructions, interruptions and authorizations of an incompatible program written for execution on another computer system built to a computer architecture incompatible with the architecture of the target processor's computer system. The disclosed process allows the target processor to emulate incompatible acts expected in the operation of an incompatible program when the target processor itself is incapable of performing the emulated acts. Each of the instructions, interruptions and authorizations found in the incompatible programs has one or more corresponding target routines, any of which may need to be preprocessed before it can precisely emulate the execution results required by the incompatible architecture. Target routines (corresponding to the incompatible instruction instances in an incompatible program being emulated) are accessed, patched where necessary, and executed by a target processor to enable the target processor to precisely obtain the execution results of the emulated incompatible program. Before preprocessing, each target routine may not be able to provide identical execution results as required by the incompatible architecture, and the preprocessing may patch one or more of its target instructions to enable the target routine to perform the identical emulation execution of the corresponding incompatible instruction. The patching and other modifications to a target routine are done by one or more preprocessing instructions stored in the target routine.

In one aspect, a method of classifying a computer object as malware includes receiving at a base computer data about a computer object from each of plural remote computers on which the object or similar objects are stored. The data about the computer object received from the plural computers is compared in the base computer. The computer object is classified as malware on the basis of said comparison. In one embodiment, the data about the computer object includes one or more of : executable instructions contained within or constituted by the object; the size of the object; the name of the object; the logical storage location or path of the object on the respective remote computers; the vendor of the object; the software product and version associated with the object; and, events initiated by or involving the object when the object is created, configured or runs on the respective remote computers.

A policy configurable file system includes a computer system upon which the policy configurable file system operates, a policy source for providing the configuration policies, and one or more file servers. The computer system includes software for enforcing one or more configuration policies. The policy source is typically either a policy server such that the policy is derived from the policy server, or a policy configurable file system, such that the policy is embedded in the policy configurable file system. The one or more file servers each uses a protocol, wherein the protocols of the one or more file servers are not all the same. In one case, the one or more of the configurable policies are separable from the policy configurable file system. In another case, the one or more configurable policies are downloadable to the computer system.

The execution time overhead of software emulation is reduced by selecting frequently emulated instruction sequences in the software being emulated, and translating those instruction sequences into the instruction set of the emulating processor. In a first phase, frequently repeated sequences of emulated computer code are identified and selected for translation. In a second phase, the selected sequences from the instruction set of the emulated processor are translated into equivalent sequences for the instruction set of the emulating processor. In a third phase, the instruction sequence of the emulating processor is executed in lieu of emulating the original instructions from the emulated software.

Memory requirements for an emulation system are reduced by generating semantic routines on demand during emulation, rather than statically storing all routines in the body of a software emulation system. The static portion of the emulator code that is loaded into the memory of the computer comprises only one copy of each different type of semantic routine. For the emulated instruction that corresponds to the one routine stored in the emulator code, a dispatch table entry comprises a pointer to the stored semantic routine. The dispatch table entries for the other emulated instructions of the same type comprise pointers to a semantic routine generator for instructions that have the same number of operands. This semantic routine generator locates the statically stored semantic routine and makes a copy of it, substituting the appropriate operands for the desired instruction in place of those in the statically stored routine. Once this modified copy of the static semantic routine has been generated and stored in memory, its address is entered into the dispatch table, in place of the pointer to the semantic routine generator. All subsequent calls to the new instruction are then emulated by using the dynamically generated semantic routine.

An emulation system contains reorganized instruction code sequences for a computer, so that the native code which is used to emulate instructions that occur most frequently in a typical environment are grouped together, to thereby minimize instruction cache conflicts. A representative set of programs which operate with the emulated code are run, and statistics are recorded to determine the most frequently occurring emulated instructions. The native code which emulates these most frequently occurring instructions is then arranged so that the portions of the code are statically stored in main memory at consecutive memory locations. As a result, when the native code for a frequently occurring emulated instruction is loaded from the memory into the cache, the likelihood that the cache will contain the native code for subsequent emulated instructions is maximized, and the likelihood of cache conflicts is minimized.
