Impact of pegylated interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin on liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

Damage of large arteries is a major contributory factor to the high pulse pressure observed in patients with end-stage renal disease. Whether incremental modulus of elasticity (Einc), a classic marker of arterial stiffness, can predict cardiovascular mortality has never been investigated. A cohort of 79 patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis was studied between September 1995 and January 1998. Mean age at entry was 58+/-15 years. The duration of follow-up was 25+/-7 months, during which 10 cardiovascular and 8 noncardiovascular fatal events occurred. At entry, carotid Einc was calculated from measurements of diameter, thickness (echo-tracking technique), and pulse pressure (tonometry). Based on Cox analyses, 2 dominant factors emerged as predictors of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality: increased Einc and decreased diastolic blood pressure. Lipid abnormalities and the presence of previous cardiovascular events interfered to a smaller extent. After adjustment for confounding variables, the odds ratio for Einc >/=1 kPa-3 was 9.2 (95% confidence interval, 2.4 to 35.0) for all-cause mortality. These results provide the first direct evidence that in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis, arterial alterations, as determined from carotid Einc, are strong independent predictors of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

The objectives of this study were to characterize early postpartum (PP) follicular development in dairy cows and to evaluate the influence of energy balance (EB) and the level of dietary fat on dominant follicle development and function. Forty-five multiparous Holstein cows were fed either low (LF, 3.3%), moderate (MF, 5.2%), or high (HF, 7.1%) total dietary fat beginning at parturition, and daily EB was determined for all cows. Follicular development was monitored by ultrasonography, and blood plasma was analyzed for metabolites, metabolic hormones, progesterone, estradiol, and FSH. After an increase (p 15 mm) follicles on Day 14 PP as compared to the LF diet. Cows fed the MF diet had higher (p 10 mm) dominant follicles was not a limiting factor in PP reproductive recovery, and moderate dietary fat shortened the interval to first ovulation. Follicular competence early PP was associated with higher plasma IGF-I and a shorter interval to the EB nadir.

Beginning with the 75th Anniversary of the American Statistical Association in 1914 and for subsequent 25-year celebrations, distinguished members of the association have addressed the future of statistics. A four-person panel engaged in the same exercise during the 2014 Joint Statistical Meetings for the ASA's dodransbicentennial. The panel identified a variety of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for the profession in the next quarter of a century. This article highlights some of the discussion that took place.

Challenges and Opportunities for Statistics in the Next 25 Years

INTRODUCTION Diligent instructors frequently find the task of researching, comparing, and selecting a textbook a frustrating and time-consuming task. Such faculty, regardless of discipline, would find useful a resource that provides easy access to timely, accurate, and dispassionate information about textbooks in their field. This is particularly true for younger and less experienced instructors. We believe that instructors who teach statistics have an even greater need for such a resource than those who teach other subjects. It appears that the introductory, applied statistics course is the fastest-growing mathematics course in United States fourand two-year and colleges. Moreover, while precise figures are hard to come by, it is clear that many introductory, applied statistics courses are being taught by instructors who lack a background (and it must be added, an interest) in the subject. Statistics may be unique not only because it is frequently taught by non-specialists but also in the extent to which it is taught in the workplace. Both government and industry offer an enormous range of statistics courses at all levels. All this suggests a large pool of concerned instructors who would make use of a website devoted to statistical textbooks. Now with recent advances in technology, it is possible to construct such a database that will be up-to-date and easily accessible. This paper will describe a website (http://155.48.40.90/StatTextbooks/) that can be referenced worldwide by instructors of introductory, applied statistics courses.
