A system and method provide a security agent, consisting of a monitor and a responder, that respond to a detected security event in a data communications network, by producing and transmitting a security alert message to a network security manager. The alert is a security administration action which includes setting a flag in an existing transmitted protocol frame to indicate a security event has occurred. The security agent detects the transmission of infected programs and data across a high-speed communications network. The security agent includes an adaptive, active monitor using finite state machines, that can be dynamically reprogrammed in the event it becomes necessary to dynamically reconfigure it to provide real time detection of the presence of a suspected offending virus.

The invention features a system and method to enable real-time establishment and maintenance of a standard of operation for a data communications network. The standard is a data set which includes network activity which is historically categorized by traffic type and by activity. The process begins with monitoring the network media or some network component over some period of time. The monitoring information is used to build benchmark data sets. The benchmark data sets contain a standard of operation for the network, which are historically categorized by either traffic type or activity. This standard of operation is constantly built by the intelligent monitoring facilities. After some period of time which is referred to as the benchmark data set refresh interval, the benchmark that was created is employed in a fashion to allow a determination as to whether the data that is taken from the current monitoring activity indicates normal network behavior. If the current network operating characteristics are outside the bounds or normal behavior, then alerts and logs of information can be sent to the expert system. The expert system can then effect some network control. In this manner, auto benchmarking is accomplished with self customization.

Intelligent realtime monitoring of data traffic

A device for distributing a serial stream of commands and associated data to a parallel array of processing units so that the data processed by the parallel processing units can be recombined in the original order in which the serial stream was received. The command distributor of the invention hands out commands to the parallel processing units using a true "first come, first serve" algorithm using fast bus arbitration hardware. Each parallel processing unit requests data to be input when all of its data has been processed, and bus arbitration is used to prevent conflict when a plurality of requests are received. The ID of the processor to which a command is assigned is used in recombining the processed data into a serial data stream having the same order as the original. Means are also provided by which single commands which require considerable processing may be executed in parallel on more than one of the processors, with each portion of the result coming from a different processor, yet maintaining the sequentiality of the output data stream. Processing speed is further enhanced by broadcasting global commands to all processors at once.

A parallel processing system performs an application function by a plurality of processing unit contained within a single network. The parallel processing system includes at least one slave unit connected to a common network and capable of processing a specified amount of data at a particular processing speed. At least one master unit, which may include a local slave unit, is connected to the common network and initiates an application function to be processed by the slave units. The slave units are polled to determine the processing power of each slave unit, the resources available to each slave unit and the availability of each slave unit. One or more slave units are engaged in processing the application function. If a plurality of slave units are selected, the application function is divided into a plurality of portions of data and each portion is assigned and communicated to a specific slave unit for processing. Predetermined calculations are performed on each portion of data by each slave unit.

Dynamic fault-tolerant parallel processing system for performing an application function with increased efficiency using heterogeneous processors

A system and process are disclosed that allows the collection of events to be organized and ordered so that relationship between events and the events themselves can be identified as a state or series of states which describe and allow control of performance aspects of protocol activity. The architecture allows dynamic programming of multiple of devices for the purposes of coordination and correlation of events such that monitoring, performance analysis and control can be accomplished on a real-time basis for any speed network. The architecture facilitates feedback of the correlated events for the purposes of monitoring and controlling network activity.

Information collection architecture and method for a data communications network

Tasks may be planned for execution on a single processor or are split up by the designer for execution among a plurality of signal processors. The tasks are modeled using a design aid called a precedence graph, from which a dependency table and a prerequisite table are established for reference within each processor. During execution, at the completion of a given task, an end of task interrupt is provided from any processor which has completed a task to any and all other processors including itself in which completion of that task is a prerequisite for commencement of any dependent tasks. The relevant updated data may be transferred by the processor either before or after signalling task completion to the processors needing the updated data prior to commencing execution of the dependent tasks. Coherency may be ensured, however, by sending the data before the interrupt. When the end of task interrupt is received in a processor, its dependency table is consulted to determine those tasks dependent upon completion of the task which has just been signalled as completed, and task dependency signals indicative thereof are provided and stored in a current status list of a prerequisite table. The current status of all current prerequisites are compared to the complete prerequisites listed for all affected tasks and those tasks for which the comparison indicates that all prerequisites have been met are queued for execution in a selected order.
