Hard copy graphical output of a suitably programmed data processing system is generated in a matrix printer in response to controls and binary image information presented to the graphical system of the invention in the form of serially received data blocks, such as from a tape drive. The graphical system in accordance herewith receives data blocks including binary information in the form of standard templates, 16 printable dots wide and 16 printable dots high. The data block includes an input address for storing each binary image data template which follows the address. The system also receives in the data blocks, literal address codes which are stored in predetermined sequentially addressed locations of memory, the order of receipt of the literal address codes relating to the order in which the templates are to be accessed for printing. The input addresses used for storing literal address codes and binary image data templates comprise high-order address portions, the system herewith supplying sequences of low-ordered address portions to be used therewith for the purpose of accessing repetitively, in sequence, 16 storage locations for each input address received in the data block. Variations in graphical format are achieved with variations in the video clock rate with respect to the data presentation rate at the imager, variations in sheet transport speed, variations in the basic system clock rate, horizontal and vertical linking of basic templates, truncation of templates (to less than the standard size), and resolution variation resulting from single or quadruple spot generation per binary image bit. Data blocks received by the system include system control characters for controlling the above features. Indirect addressing includes automatic generation of low-order address bits for both read and write addresses of a read-write memory; automatic low-order address generation for read addresses controls scanning of the data through successive memory locations in a correct order to print one dot row at a time for as many data templates as should appear in the print line, repetitively, as many times as there are rows in the templates designated for the print line.

The data processing printout system includes a printer controller having a memory storage unit for storing information, in the form of multi-character messages, originating from the computer or from the display terminals. Messages stored in the memory storage unit are continuously extracted therefrom, even though new messages may, at the same time, be in the process of being entered into the memory storage unit. The extracted messages are applied selectively to printers connected to the printer controller and to which the display terminals are assigned. The computer may cause messages to be printed by any one of the printers. In accordance with the invention, only messages of a length up to a predetermined maximum permissible length are allowed to be stored in the storage unit for subsequent use by the printers. The availability of space in the memory storage unit for the storage of messages of a length up to the aforementioned maximum permissible length is determined by a space availability arrangement which continuously examines the empty spaces in the memory storage unit to find empty spaces capable of storing messages having lengths equal to the maximum permissible length and allows messages to be stored therein wherever sufficient contiguous empty space is deemed to exist. There are, therefore, no special assigned spaces in the memory storage unit for messages originating from the computer or from the display terminals.

An extra vertical scan line is added to the displayed characters at an escapement increment determined by the character of the character set requiring the greatest proportion of scan line expansion per character width in order to achieve proper character definition. Those characters requiring an additional unit of escapement to be properly defined utilize the added vertical scan lines and excess added vertical scan lines are distributed in the ''''white space'''' between characters. The added display columns have the same affect as increasing the number of scans per unit of character escapement.

The processing arrangement includes an input register for receiving in succession the characters of each message. For each new-line character received by the input register, a new line control bit is added to the next character which is not a new-line character, and the character with the new line control bit is transferred to a buffer and, thereafter, to a memory storage unit to which a number of printers are coupled. The newline character itself is prevented from being transferred to the buffer or to the memory storage unit. In the case of successive new-line characters received by the input register, each of the new-line characters following the first new-line character, with the exception of the last new-line character, is replaced by a space character and a new line control bit is added thereto, and a new line control bit is added to the character following the last new-line character which is not a new-line character. The characters with the new line control bits added thereto are transferred to the buffer and, thereafter, to the memory storage unit. Again, the new-line characters are prevented from being transferred to the buffer or to the memory storage unit. The absence of new-line characters in the memory storage unit leads to a conservation of storage space therein and simplifies newline decoding needs of the system.
