A growing number of collaborative networked organizations can be found in industry, services, and research. However, the lack of a reference model that could synthesize and formalize the base concepts, principles, and recommended practices, is an obstacle for an easier and more consistent development of the area. Therefore, after a clarification of concepts and terminology, the ARCON reference modeling approach is proposed considering multiple modeling perspectives: environment characteristics, life cycle, and modeling intent. This novel modeling framework takes into account contributions from previous works on enterprise modeling and extends them to the context of collaborative networked organizations. Technical, Semantic and Organizational Issues of Enterprise Interoperability and Networking

Traditional approaches to the modeling of complex manufacturing systems are expensive, time consuming, and of limited value. Recent developments in several areas (i.e., knowledge engineering, software engineering, modeling formalisms, engineering workstations, and database systems) are now to the point that a meaningful convergence can be crafted to yield a modeling environment far superior to any we have known in the past. Fundamental to this new approach to modeling are the recent developments in object-oriented programming and related technologies. A research team at Oklahoma State University has been exploring alternative approaches to the modeling and simulation of complex manufacturing systems since 1985. This paper argues for a fundamental paradigm shift in the development and utilization of models within a CEM framework.

Examining the digitalisation of virtual enterprises amidst the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic and meta-analysis

Time estimation in new product development (NPD) projects is often a complex problem due to its nonlinearity and the small quantity of data patterns. Support vector regression (SVR) based on statistical learning theory is introduced as a new neural network technique with maximum generalization ability. The SVR has been utilized to solve nonlinear regression problems successfully. However, the applicability of the SVR is highly affected due to the difficulty of selecting the SVR parameters appropriately. The imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) as a socio-politically inspired optimization strategy is employed to solve the real world engineering problems. This optimization algorithm is inspired by competition mechanism among imperialists and colonies, in contrast to evolutionary algorithms. This paper presents a new model integrating the SVR and the ICA for time estimation in NPD projects, in which ICA is used to tune the parameters of the SVR. A real data set from a case study of an NPD project in a manufacturing industry is presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed model. In addition, the comparison is provided between the proposed model and conventional techniques, namely nonlinear regression, back-propagation neural networks (BPNN), pure SVR and general regression neural networks (GRNN). The experimental results indicate that the presented model achieves high estimation accuracy and leads to effective prediction. Highlights? Nowadays, enterprises cooperate more extensively with other enterprises during the entire product life cycle. Temporary alliances between various enterprises emerge such as those in Virtual Enterprises. However, many enterprises experience difficulties in the formation and operation of virtual enterprises, for instance concerning integration issues. This chapter lays down an architectural framework, called VERAM, which aims to support the set up and operation of virtual enterprises. The framework aims to offer handles that contribute to solving the problems that enterprises face when they want to cooperate in a Virtual Enterprise. Supported by the framework, individual enterprises might operate and set up a virtual enterprise from a dynamic, inter-enterprise network. Furthermore, this chapter shows how other chapters of this book fit into the VERAM architectural framework.

VERAM: Virtual Enterprise Reference Architecture and Methodology

This paper analyses different types of Reference Models (RMs) applicable to support the set up and (re)configuration of virtual enterprises (VEs). RMs are models capturing concepts common to VEs aiming to convert the task of setting up of VE towards a configuration task, and hence reduce the time needed for VE creation. The RMs are analysed through a mapping onto the Virtual Enterprise Reference Architecture (VERA) created in the IMS GLOBEMEN project based upon GERAM.

GERAM as Basis for a Virtual Enterprise Framework Model

In the IMS-project Globeman21, the enterprise reference architecture GERAM was used as basis for creation of a virtual enterprise framework model. The model was used to map different industrial pilot projects, to classify virtual enterprise concepts, and as underlying structure for a virtual enterprise management methodology. The paper gives a survey of the use of GERAM and the results obtained.

The Globemen Consortium has developed the virtual enterprise reference architecture and methodology (VERAM), based on GERAM and developed reference models for virtual enterprise management and joint mission delivery. The planned virtual enterprise capability includes the areas of sales and marketing, global engineering, and customer relationship management. The reference models are the basis for the development of ICT infrastructure requirements. These in turn can be used for ICT infrastructure specification (sometimes referred to as ‘ICT architecture’).Part of the ICT architecture is industry-wide, part of it is industry-specific and a part is specific to the domains of the joint activity that characterises the given Virtual Enterprise Network at hand. The article advocates a step by step approach to building virtual enterprise capability.
