The increasing importance of Erasmus exchanges, the facilities to start international double-degrees and also the possibilities of teacher exchanges have raised the interest of universities for tuition in a foreign language, especially English. At Universitat Jaume I, a group of lecturers suggested to the authorities to start teaching their classes in English in order to attract Erasmus students from other universities. As a consequence, an institutional Project was proposed and approved with the aim of facilitating the introduction of the foreign language as the language of tuition in some undergraduate courses. The Project started in 2003 with a duration of two years, and 28 teachers from 7 different departments joined it immediately. Thanks to this project, during the academic year 2005-2006, 22 subjects in 9 different courses started introducing English progressively as the language of tuition. The aim of this paper is to explain how the Project was conceived, and how it has been developed, using a methodology of participation, debate and collaboration between content and language teachers.

The rise of English as the world’s main international language has prompted a social justice agenda underpinned by an assumption that English causes or exacerbates inequality and injustice in the world. In this position statement, I set out to problematise and complexify this assumption, suggesting that English is neither a “Tyrannosaurus Rex”, a “Cuckoo” nor a “Lingua Frankensteinia”, but a “Red Herring”, distracting attention away from the underlying causes of inequality. Within the theoretical framework of “verbal hygiene” (Cameron 1995, 2012a), and drawing on my own empirical work and that of others, I argue for widening the scope of global English and more broadly applied linguistics. I suggest that as socially committed applied linguists, we stand a better chance of solving “real-world problems” (Brumfit 1995: 27) if greater attention is accorded to systems of inequality that are not obviously language-based. I will suggest that a too narrow focus on linguistic injustice risks losing sight of the underlying non-linguistic conditions that produce this injustice. I conclude by suggesting some ways forward that centre on co-thinking language with political, social, economic, cultural and material conditions.

Terminology and Lexicography Research and Practice aims to provide in-depth studies and background information pertaining to Lexicography and Terminology. General works include philosophical, historical, theoretical, computational and cognitive approaches. Other works focus on structures for purpose- and domain-specific compilation (LSP), dictionary design, and training. The series includes monographs, state-of-the-art volumes and course books in the English language. 

Terminology and Lexicography Research and Practice

The aim and scope of this paper is to assess some aspects of Wuster's work on signs and the influence of his works on terminological semiotics. The discussion deals with two aspects:

• The sign typologies (classifications) of terminology, and
• The conception of the linguistic sign within terminology

I wish to outline some developments and the state-of-the-art in the way signs are conceived within terminology, as well as some answers to the fundamental question of what there is to gain from sign models. 

The sign typologies proposed by Wuster, Schroder, Budin and Jarvi are reviewed. The sign models used by terminologists are then discussed according to the number of important parameters represented in the models, whether binary (Saussure), triadic (Ogden/Richards) or four-field (Wuster). Further developments of Wuster’s model are then assessed, the models proposed by Weissenhofer, Gerzymisch-
Arbogast and Oeser.

Several shortcomings and criticism are reviewed and discussed, with reference to the philosophical, semiotic and linguistic levels. Implications for practical work are outlined, and a progression from behaviorism towards constructivism, contextual aspects and dynamism is identified. It is suggested that all models be assessed according to their usefulness and fruitfulness for applied purposes.

Finally, I suggest that Wuster's sign may fruitfully contribute to providing a theory of representations. The Post-Wuster sign models illustrate a current tendency of "re-thinking" and re-establishing terminology as a linguistic discipline.

Sign models in terminology: tendencies and functions.

The article discusses theoretical problems of term formation with respect to the tradition as well as to recent developments of terminology theory. Terminology theory has been challenged, discussed and revised during the last three decades. It is asked whether the subfield of term formation has experienced the same sort of theoretical challenging as have other subfields of terminology and whether a clear state of the art of term formation can be identified. Existing models of term formation are discussed and the main positions of some modern approaches are outlined and discussed with respect to the consequences these approaches might have for theoretical and practical terminology work.The article argues that any attempt at developing a theory of term formation must take into account primary as well as secondary term formation. Functional aspects of terms are interesting to practitioners and hence, relevant to theory. The article agrees that the question of a specific theory of term formation perhaps still is open, but suggests that a more modest approach to ‘theorising’ term formation in all its aspects should be encouraged.

Daher ist es nur logisch auch von anderem als nur dem Domanenverlust zu sprechen. Obwohl die Beispiele des Artikels vorzugsweise aus dem Bereich der Wissenschaftssprache stammen, ist der
Begriffsapparat auch auf weitere Bereiche ubertragbar.

Traditional terminology is currently being questioned and criticised, and this criticism tends to take central dichotomies as its point of departure. This article takes as its point of departure two theses, both of which address two dichotomies: a) there are no fixed boundaries between specialised communication and other forms of communication, and, consequently, b) there are no fixed boundaries between terms and the rest of vocabulary and phraseology. By combining a semasiological study of some of the central dichotomies of terminology with a historical approach, the paper argues that central dichotomies of terminology and LSP have been subject to a renegotiation that is not yet terminated. Some traditional dichotomies seem to have been recontextualised without being completely refuted.
