Naval architects often say that every ship is a compromise between many conflicting requirements. This widely-held belief immediately raises the question as to what kind of ship and, therefore, what kind of compromise, would suit the ship owner’s interest best. The approach presented in this thesis aims to improve the early stage design process of service vessels by helping the naval architect to generate and explore a large and diverse set of three-dimensional ship designs. In turn, this set enables the thorough investigation of a wide range of different compromises before settling upon a well-founded –and a more competitive- ship design that reflects the most promising compromise and, as such, will be deemed desirable by its owner. The approach has four key features. Firstly, it uses a novel parametric ship description (based on `packing problems’) that can handle large and concurrent changes to the entire three-dimensional ship design, i.e., hull, superstructure, decks, bulkheads and the arrangement of systems in the ship can all change without human interaction. Secondly, it uses a search algorithm to generate a large and diverse set of ship designs that reflect a wide range of different compromises. Thirdly, the naval architect considers all feasible designs to gain insight in conflicting characteristics before selecting the most promising ship designs in a transparent manner. The selection can be based on objective and constraint values, as well as on the naval architect’s own engineering judgement. Fourthly, the naval architect takes all selection decisions to help instil the crucial sense of ownership for the ship designs that result from the selection process. This novel design approach has been applied successfully to design two types of service vessels: deep water drillships and frigates. It proved able to establish the design impact of variations in payload and performance requirements. Moreover, the resulting set of designs was subsequently used to illustrate how the naval architect can identify and select designs that excel at particular performances, such as sea-keeping. In summary, the approach is expected to improve the naval architect’s ability to identify promising ship designs early on, which should lead to the design of more competitive service vessels.

A Packing Approach for the Early Stage Design of Service Vessels

We present RCE (Remote Component Environment), an open-source framework developed primarily at DLR (German Aerospace Center) that enables its users to construct and execute multidisciplinary engineering workflows comprising multiple disciplinary tools. To this end, RCE supplies users with an easy-to-use graphical interface that allows for the intuitive integration of disciplinary tools. Users can execute the individual tools on arbitrary nodes present in the network and all data accrued during the execution of the workflow are collected and stored centrally. Hence, RCE makes it easy for collaborating engineers to contribute their individual disciplinary tools to a multidisciplinary design or analysis, and simplifies the subsequent analysis of the workflow's results.

RCE: An Integration Environment for Engineering and Science.

The typical voyage of a barge transporting maritime containers inland, consists of visiting a set of terminals where loading/unloading operations occur. The required stowage plans must meet stability requirements during all transport phases and avoid costly re-handling operations. In this paper, we formalize this problem and consider a typical dry-port transport system. We propose a comprehensive mathematical model that seeks to maximize stowed containers. To solve it, we develop a hybrid metaheuristic approach, based on local search and an industrial solver. Numerical experiments, based on real-world data, provide insights into the performances of the proposed framework and current stowage practices.

A decision-support framework for the stowage of maritime containers in inland shipping

Today’s global enterprises have faced with a growing increase in the competitiveness that forces them to adopt and develop new strategies and methods. Recent researches have proposed the Cloud manufacturing as the new paradigm for global manufacturing enterprises. The first challenge in cloud manufacturing paradigm is the manufacturing data integration concept. The integration of enterprise-level business systems with manufacturing systems is found to be one of the inevitable drivers for productivity. However, integrating heterogeneous and autonomous data sources through enterprises which are numerous in number and also in approaches is a significant challenge. Moreover, the data integration should involve the integration of autonomous, distributed, and heterogeneous database sources into a single data source associated with a global schema in Cloud manufacturing paradigm. In this chapter, the concepts of Cloud manufacturing data integration have been discussed comprehensively. Discussing the dominant researches for both manufacturing ontology models and solutions proposed as enabler approaches in global manufacturing data integration, the chapter illustrates two main characteristics of an efficient global Cloud manufacturing ontology model. The first characteristic emphasizes on a consistent manufacturing data model, while the second one looks for an efficient management structure to fulfill the improvements and developments in manufacturing discourses. The chapter uses the axiomatic design theory to propose an efficient idea for a global Cloud manufacturing ontology model. The proposed idea fulfills the first axiom of the axiomatic design theory which insures the capabilities of the proposed ontology model to fulfill the characteristics of an efficient global manufacturing ontology model. The capability of the proposed approach is discussed by proposing implementation structures for a manufacturing ontology model based on the international standard organization standards related to ISO 10303, ISO 15531, and ISO 18629. The proposed Cloud manufacturing ontology model can be considered as the basic step toward achieving the global Cloud manufacturing.

A Virtual Integration Platform (VIP) is described which provides support for the integration of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools into an environment that supports the use of these tools in a distributed collaborative manner. The VIP has evolved through previous EU research conducted within the VRShips-ROPAX 2000 (VRShips) project and the current version discussed here was developed predominantly within the VIRTUE project but also within the SAFEDOR project. The VIP is described with respect to the support it provides to designers and analysts in co-ordinating and optimising CFD analysis requests. Two case studies are provided that illustrate the application of the VIP within HSVA: the use of a panel code for the evaluation of geometry variations in order to improve propeller efficiency, and the use of a dedicated maritime RANS code (FreSCo) to improve the wake distribution for the VIRTUE tanker. A discussion is included detailing the background, application and results from the use of the VIP within these two case studies as well as how the platform was of benefit during the development and a consideration of how it can benefit HSVA in the future.

HOLISTIC Ship Design for Future Waterborne Transport

Operational performance optimization is a key element to reduce both fuel consumption and emissions and meet current and upcoming legislation, e.g., the EEXI, the CII and the European ETS. While technical innovation and improvements are important, the careful use of fuel on board plays a vital role to meet these targets. Here route and speed optimization are decisive. The basis of any approach to operational optimization is a digital twin which allows predicting the behavior of the ship and its energy consuming systems in a reliable and suitably accurate way. Here geometry plays an important role. The German R&D project MariData (maridata.org) addresses (present) shortcomings of onboard energy management systems. One specific element highlighted in this paper focuses on the desired quality of geometric representations for digital twins when used as a basis for performance analysis and improved energy consumption during operation. The paper compares different approaches and necessary levels of modeling fidelity to indicate attainable accuracy, aiming at further elucidating how good hydrodynamics need to be represented.
