Azithromycin maintenance treatment in patients with frequent exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COLUMBUS): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Sevim Uzun,Remco S. Djamin,Jan Kluytmans,Paul G.H. Mulder,Nils E. van ‘t Veer,Anton A.M. Ermens,Aline J. Pelle,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Menno M. van der Eerden +9 more
TL;DR: Maintenance treatment with azithromycin significantly decreased the exacerbation rate compared with placebo and should therefore be considered for use in patients with COPD who have the frequent exacerbator phenotype and are refractory to standard care.

COX-2 inhibition improves immunotherapy and is associated with decreased numbers of myeloid-derived suppressor cells in mesothelioma. Celecoxib influences MDSC function
Joris D. Veltman,Margaretha E H Lambers,Menno van Nimwegen,Rudi W. Hendriks,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Joost P.J.J. Hegmans +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that celecoxib is a powerful tool to improve dendritic cell-based immunotherapy and is associated with a reduction in the numbers and suppressive function of MDSC, suggesting that immunotherapy approaches benefit from simultaneously blocking cyclooxygenase-2 activity.
Characteristics of Lung Cancers Detected by Computer Tomography Screening in the Randomized NELSON Trial
Nanda Horeweg,Carlijn M. van der Aalst,Erik Thunnissen,Kristiaan Nackaerts,Carla Weenink,Harry J.M. Groen,Jan-Willem J. Lammers,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Ernst T. Scholten,Joost van Rosmalen,Willem P.Th.M. Mali,Matthijs Oudkerk,Harry J. de Koning +12 more
TL;DR: Despite stringent criteria for a positive screening, an increasing length of screening interval, and few female participants, the screening strategy of the NELSON trial resulted in a favorable cancer stage distribution at diagnosis, which is essential for the effectiveness of this screening strategy.

Maintenance bevacizumab–pemetrexed after first-line cisplatin–pemetrexed–bevacizumab for advanced nonsquamous nonsmall-cell lung cancer: updated survival analysis of the AVAPERL (MO22089) randomized phase III trial
Fabrice Barlesi,Arnaud Scherpereel,Vera Gorbunova,Radj Gervais,Anders Vikström,Christos Chouaid,Antonio Chella,Jeong-Ho Kim,Myung-Ju Ahn,Martin Reck,Antonio Pazzola,H. T. Kim,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Claire Morando,Anderson Loundou,H. Groen,Achim Rittmeyer +16 more
TL;DR: In an unselected population of nsNSCLC patients achieving disease control on platinum-based induction therapy, maintenance with bevacizumab-pemetrexed was associated with a nonsignificant increase in OS over bevacsumab alone.

Tumor-Specific Cytotoxic T Cells Are Crucial for Efficacy of Immunomodulatory Antibodies in Patients with Lung Cancer
TL;DR: Tumor-induced impairment of CTLs and experimental treatments that can stimulate T-cell responses and optimize specific CTL function are discussed and 2 types of immune cells with known suppressive capacity on C TLs that are of pivotal importance in patients with lung cancer are discussed.
