Strontium oxide modified mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride/titanium dioxide nanocomposites (SrO-mpg-CN/TiO2) as efficient heterojunction photocatalysts for the degradation of tetracycline in water

Background: Microcystin (MC) is a hepatotoxic and carcinogenic toxin that is generated by cyanotoxins which can have adverse effects on the human health. Therefore, it is very important to remove it from the environment. This study was performed to investigate the efficiency of titanium dioxide (TiO2)/NaY-zeolite (T/N-Z) nanocomposite for removal of MC-LR under ultraviolet light. Methods: In the present study, T/N-Z nanocomposite was synthesized using the hydrothermal method. Specification of the photocatalysts was determined by the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to survey the effects of operating variables such as pH, contact time, and catalyst dose on the removal of MC-LR. The MC-LR concentration was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results: It was revealed that the increase of contact time and catalyst dose had a positive effect on enhancing the removal efficiency of MC-LR, but pH had a negative effect. Finally, the maximum MC-LR removal efficiency was 97.63, which occurred at pH = 5, contact time = 120 min, and catalyst dose = 1.2 g/L. Conclusion: In general, T/N-Z composite in aqueous solutions under the UV light can easily decompose MC-LR and it can also be proposed as an efficient composite for removal of MC-LR from contaminated water.

The performance of TiO2/NaY-zeolite nanocomposite in photocatalytic degradation of Microcystin-LR from aqueous solutions: Optimization by response surface methodology (RSM)

Sugarcane bagasse is an abundant biomass waste and a promising carbon source for preparing carbon-based materials such as carbon quantum dots (CQDs). Low quantum yield is a major problem for sugarcane bagasse-based carbon quantum dots. Heteroatom-doped modification is an efficient approach to improve the quantum yield. A facile hydrothermal carbonization method was applied to synthesize the nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dot N-CQDs using urea as the nitrogen source. The synthetic procedure was determined by the single-factor experiments and the response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box–Behnken design (BBD). The optical properties of optimized N-CQD-13 were more excellent than those of undoped CQD. Higher quantum yields (both absolute and relative) were observed in N-CQD-13. Additionally, N-CQD-13 exhibited high stability for long-time storage and excellent pH tolerance in aqueous solutions. N-CQD-13 were applied to detect Fe3+ in aqueous solutions with a low detection limit of 0.44 μM. The fluorescence lifetime decay of the N-CQD-13 solutions untreated and treated with Fe3+ indicated the probable involvement of a dynamic fluorescence-quenching mechanism. Thus, this work explored a reliable method for the high-quality utilization of bagasse.

Box–Behnken Design Optimizing Sugarcane Bagasse-Based Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots Preparation and Application in Ferric Ion Detection

In this work, firstly magnetic pumice (Fe3O4@PMC) composite was prepared by chemical co-precipitation method. Afterward MoS2 decorated Fe3O4@PMC (MoS2@Fe3O4@PMC) with high catalytic efficiency was successfully synthesized to be used in the degradation of methyl orange (MO) in the presence of NaBH4. Several spectroscopic and microscopic analyses were carried out to better understand the surface characteristic properties of the catalyst. The effects and interactions of some influencing parameters (initial dye concentration (Co, mg/L), NaBH4 amount (M), catalyst amount (mg/mL), and time (s)) on the degradation process were evaluated and optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Under the obtained optimum conditions (Co 12.62 mg/L, NaBH4 amount 0.38 M, catalyst amount 0.388 mg/mL, and time 150.34 s), the de-colorization efficiency for MO was found to be 98.66%. The obtained experimental data for degradation efficiency are in close agreement with statistically predicted values (96%). The reaction rate constant of the MoS2@Fe3O4@PMC catalyst, which has a high catalytic effect for MO degradation under optimum conditions, was calculated as 1.357 min-1. Also, the apparent activation energy for the MO degradation was obtained to be 13.29 kJ/mol. Moreover, the obtained nanocomposite shows outstanding reusability and excellent catalytic activity even after five cycles, offering a facile and active process for the degradation of toxic organic pollutants in the presence of NaBH4. This study presents a fast, inexpensive, magnetically separable, reusable, and highly efficient catalyst for the degradation of pollutants in wastewater without any noble metal clusters.

Synthesis and characterization of an efficient catalyst based on MoS2 decorated magnetic pumice: An experimental design study for methyl orange degradation

The continuous upsurge in water pollution caused by harmful organic and inorganic contaminants has led to a shortage of nontoxic, clean water and effective waste management. Therefore, it is crucial to establish an eco-friendly approach using sustainable, biodegradable, and recyclable materials to treat the wastewater. In this regard, photocatalysts are highly effective for mitigating water pollution to a certain degree through an energy-efficient and greener approach. Among various photocatalysts, polymeric nanocomposites have attracted considerable consideration owing to their several advantageous characteristics like higher surface area, extended surface to volume ratio, advanced adsorption efficiency, and application for the degradation of harmful contaminants. In this comprehensive review, we have focused on the recent synthetic approaches for development of polymeric nanocomposites. Also, the application of these polymeric nanocomposites for the degradation of harmful contaminants has also been extensively summarized. This article further extensively discusses the process of photocatalysis to provide a clear understanding to the reader.
