This paper summarizes the current state of the art and recent trends in software engineering economics. It provides an overview of economic analysis techniques and their applicability to software engineering and management. It surveys the field of software cost estimation, including the major estimation techniques available, the state of the art in algorithmic cost models, and the outstanding research issues in software cost estimation.

Database normalization theory offers formalized guidelines how to reduce data redundancy and thus problems that it causes in databases. More lately, researchers have started to formalize ideas that the problems caused by unwanted dependencies and redundancy can be observed in case of any modular system like software, hardware, or organization. To tackle these problems, they have proposed the theory of normalized systems that complete application frees systems of combinatorial effects and thus the impact of a change in a system does not depend on the system size. At the time of writing this paper, the explanations of the theory of normalized systems do not say much about database normalization. We think that the theories are deeply related. In this paper, we search a common ground of the database normalization theory and the theory of normalized systems.

The Database Normalization Theory and the Theory of Normalized Systems: Finding a Common Ground

OpenCASE, an original CASE tool supporting conceptual modelling is presented in this paper. The CASE tool has been developed during the research focused on the ontology-centred conceptual modelling. It provides a strong emphasis on terms and their relations while supporting standard notations (now BORM, other notations are planned). The tool has an open plug-in-based architecture founded on the Eclipse platform, which makes the tool modular and extensible. The knowledge base of the models may be accessed via an API and thus used to implement verifications, various calculations (statistics), to transform models to outputs (reports) and to make inner transformations (e.g. normalisation). The architecture of the tool is briefly mentioned as well.

BORM: Agile Modelling for Business Intelligence

This paper presents the BORM approach in the organizational modeling and simulation. The first part of this paper presents the BORM analysis and design methodology, which has proved to be effective in the development of business systems. The second part of this paper shows an example from our regional management project concerning the analysis of the legislation and local officials’ knowledge. The project has been related to the processes and agendas of the urban planning of the landscape areas and small settlements with regards to the new housing and building law and regional management trends in the European Union. Our methodology presents necessary aspects of the relevant organizational model without need of deep prior training. Our models were simulated, verified and validated in order to help the officials (especially from the smallest settlements) to improve their knowledge.

Organization Modeling and Simulation Using BORM Approach

There are only very few approaches to normalizing object-oriented data. In this paper we present an approach to normalization of the object-oriented conceptual model based on UML class diagrams. First part of the paper describes the current status in the area of formal methods used for object-oriented data modeling. Second part presents four normalization rules, which are based on own experience and modified Ambler-Beck approach. These normalization rules are introduced on an example. Our method has been used in education at several universities. It has been and is also used for database design in software development projects, which we carried out. Recently, development of the CASE tool based on this approach has been started.

Normalization rules of the object-oriented data model

The multidimensional data models are most often used for decision support in Business Intelligence field. This paper presents innovative approach for support of knowledge analysis in precision agriculture, where such analytical approach offers great potential for the future. Corner stone of our approach is the creation of knowledge rules based on open data and information available from inside a particular agricultural company. In the next step such explicit knowledge is transformed into multidimensional database and an analytical model for decision support of the farm’s managers is designed. Our approach is demonstrated on example concerning knowledge analysis of one of the agricultural problems – infestation of farm plants by aphids.

Multidimensional Modelling from Open Data for Precision Agriculture

This paper introduces the C.C programming language, which is designed for automated model transformations. The C.C language is outcome of our research and has been implemented in the CASE tool of a British software company. This technology started to be used by companies in the Central Europe and for business and software engineering courses at several Czech and Slovak universities, Loughborough University in the UK and Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. An interesting side-effect of this technology is C.C language application as a first teaching language in algorithmization, programming and software engineering courses.
