Performance prediction of 2D vertically stacked MoS2-WS2 heterostructures base on first-principles theory and Pearson correlation coefficient

Recently, Ti3C2Tx MXenes have begun to receive attention in the field of gas sensors owing to their characteristics of high conductivity and abundant surface functional groups. However, Ti3C2Tx-based gas sensors still suffer from the drawbacks of low sensitivity and sluggish response/recovery speed towards target gases, limiting their development in further applications. In this work, Ti3C2Tx-ZnO nanosheet hybrids were fabricated through a simple sonication method. The Ti3C2Tx-ZnO nanosheet hybrids exhibited a short recovery time (10 s) under UV (ultraviolet) illumination, a short response time (22 s), a high sensitivity (367.63% to 20 ppm NO2) and selectivity. Furthermore, the Ti3C2Tx-ZnO sensor has prominent anti-humidity properties, as well as superior reproducibility in multiple tests. The abundant active sites in the Ti3C2Tx-ZnO nanosheet hybrids, including surface groups (-F, -OH, -O) of Ti3C2Tx and oxygen vacancies of ZnO, the formation of Schottky barriers between Ti3C2Tx and ZnO nanosheets and the rich photogenerated charge carriers of ZnO under UV illumination, together result in excellent gas-sensing performance. Density functional theory calculations have been further employed to explore the sensing performance of Ti3C2Tx and ZnO nanosheets, showing strong interactions existing between the NO2 and ZnO nanosheets. The main adsorption sites for NO2 were present on the ZnO nanosheets, while the Ti3C2Tx played the role of the conductive path to accelerate the transformation of charge carriers. Our work can provide an effective way for improving the gas-sensing performances of Ti3C2Tx-based gas sensors.

Humidity is a physical quantity that evaluates the concentration of water vapor in the air. The detection of humidity has received extensive attention in various fields such as industry, agriculture, meteorology, and national defense. Among the many reported humidity detection methods, humidity sensors stand out due to their advantages of portability, easy fabrication, low cost, high sensitivity, and fast response. It is worth noting that the humidity detection limit is becoming more and more stringent in some special industries, and the dynamic range of humidity measurement can be extended from low relative humidity to ppm or ppb or even ppt level. However, the development of high-performance low humidity sensors still faces great challenges due to the very small amount of water molecules that the sensor can adsorb and the limitation of some harsh environments. So far, the literature on low humidity sensors is scarce, and there is no review on its research progress. In this case, a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the research progress of low humidity sensors is of great significance, and it may provide new insights to promote the development of low humidity sensors. Therefore, this paper reviewed the research progress of low humidity sensors for nearly three decades. Firstly, the necessity of low humidity detection, trace moisture generators and various low humidity measurement methods were introduced. Then, the research status of different types of low humidity sensors was highlighted, including capacitance, resistance, QCM, MCL, SAW, optical fiber, fluorescence and other types. 

An overview: Sensors for low humidity detection

In recent decades, chemiresistive gas sensors (CGS) have been widely studied due to their unique advantages of expedient miniaturization, simple fabrication, easy operation, and low cost. As one ubiquitous interference factor, humidity dramatically affects the performance of CGS, which has been neglected for a long time. With the rapid development of technologies based on gas sensors, including the internet of things (IoT), healthcare, environment monitoring, and food quality assessing, the humidity interference on gas sensors has been attracting increasing attention. Inspiringly, various anti-humidity strategies have been proposed to alleviate the humidity interference in this field; however, comprehensive summaries of these strategies are rarely reported. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the latest research advances on humidity-independent CGS. First, we discussed the humidity interference mechanism on gas sensors. Then, the anti-humidity strategies mainly including surface engineering, physical isolation, working parameters modulation, humidity compensation, and developing novel gas-sensing materials were successively introduced in detail. Finally, challenges and perspectives of improving the humidity tolerance of gas sensors were proposed for future research.

Recent Progress on Anti-Humidity Strategies of Chemiresistive Gas Sensors

Recent progress of Ga2O3-based gas sensors

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have blazed a novel trail in the field of NO2 gas detection owing to the unique photoelectric properties and prospective gas sensing performance especially working at low operating temperature. However, the incomplete recoverability and susceptibility to humidity at room temperature restrict the practical applications of TMDs-based gas sensors. Herein, we demonstrate a fully recoverable WS2 based gas sensor with enhanced anti-humidity ability by combining the decoration of zero-dimensional PbS nanoparticles and the assistance of UV light. Through the control over the molar ratio of WS2/PbS, the optimized WS2/PbS (the molar is 10:1) gas sensor exhibits a remarkable elevated recovery rate from 33.4% to 99.8% with almost no baseline drift as compared to that in the pure WS2 gas sensor. More importantly, attributing to the irradiation of UV can accelerate the desorption of water molecules, WS2/PbS heterostructure based gas sensor manifests more stabilized anti-humidity performance with stable initial resistance and negligible response value drift (8.8%) in the range of 10%–90% relative humidity. Furthermore, UV-assisted WS2/PbS gas sensor also possesses prominent sensing performances including high sensitivity, low detection limit (∼20 ppb), favorable selectivity and outstanding long-term stability. This research will pave the way on designing high-performance TMDs-based gas sensors operating at room temperature.

MoS2 Nanoflowers Decorated with Au Nanoparticles for Visible-Light-Enhanced Gas Sensing

High-performance formaldehyde sensors act a significant role in environmental monitoring and industrial gas analysis. However, the traditional side-heating type gas sensors fabricated by handicraft-like brush-painting or drop-casting methods still suffer from poor detection limits and the difficulty of massive fabrication, which hinders the further practical applications of gas-sensing devices. Herein, the uniform LaFeO3 thin film prepared through a facile sol-gel method combining with spin coating is proposed to achieve batch-fabricated gas sensors for the detection of gaseous formaldehyde. The fabricated gas sensor exhibits a low detection limit as low as 50 ppb toward gaseous formaldehyde, which is lower than the guideline value (80 ppb) limited by World Health Organization. Furthermore, the gas-sensing properties of batch-fabricated thin film gas sensors reveal satisfactory uniformity and replicability with low device-to-device deviation. The maximum variation of baseline resistance between different batch samples is only 5.4%, and the maximum drift of the response value toward formaldehyde is only 6.5%. The favorable gas-sensing performances and high replicability for the sensors might be attributed to the controllable fabrication process that can be completely compatible with the well-established semiconductor technics. This work will open up an effective pathway to prompt high-performance formaldehyde sensors with ppb-level detection limits toward practical applications.

Batch fabrication of formaldehyde sensors based on LaFeO3 thin film with ppb-level detection limit

Low humidity monitoring has been attached to adequate attention in a wide range of industrial fields, such as medical device hermetic packaging, semiconductor manufacturing and transformer manufacturing. However, it remains challenging to detect slight moisture change in low-humidity environment for conventional ionic-type humidity sensors. Herein, Nickel (II) bromide (NiBr2) is explored to be of a reversible moisture-induced discoloration behavior and highly sensitive to moisture in low humidity environment. NiBr2 humidity sensor delivers a tremendous impedance change nearly to 5 orders of magnitude in the low relative humidity (RH) ranging from 7 % to 24 % and the response time is only about 2 s when RH increases from 11 % to 33 %. The excellent performance for low-humidity detection can be mainly attributed to the reversible bulk absorption behavior to water molecules that lead to a reversible material transition between NiBr2 and NiBr2⋅6H2O. Meanwhile, the sensitivity of the sensor toward the range of 7 %–24 % RH exhibits nearly 5 orders of magnitude enhancement than that in medium-high humidity range of 26 %–95 % RH, which indicates that the sensitivity of the sensor to water molecules caused by the bulk absorption behavior is better than that dominated by the surface adsorption behavior. The results demonstrate that the bulk absorption behavior-mediated reversible material transition provide efficient guidance to realize low-humidity detection.
