Anthropogenic organic contaminants (AOCs) are found to exert significant impacts on the human ecosystem, even at low or trace-level concentrations. To meet the growing demand for their quantitation in diverse environmental media, the use of preconcentration approaches (such as solid phase extraction) has become an essential component to practically upgrade both procedural efficiency and the analytical sensitivity. Nanomaterials (NMs) are realized as excellent candidates for proper sorption media because of their unique structural and surface properties with noticeably enhanced sorption capability towards contaminants. This review explores the use of various NMs (metallic and mixed oxide nanoparticles (NPs), carbon NMs (fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and graphene oxide), polymer-based nanocomposites (organic polymers, inorganic and hybrid polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, and dendrimers), and silicon/magnetic NPs) as potential sorbents for analytical applications. In this review, the distinctive features of NM-based sorptive extraction techniques are examined comprehensively with the discussion on their future prospects and key challenges.

Review of nanomaterials as sorbents in solid-phase extraction for environmental samples

Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), an emerging sample pretreatment technique, has received much attention because of its environment friendliness, rapid separation process, excellent adsorption efficiency, and easily automated assay. This paper reviews the nature of MSPE, and the types and preparation of magnetic adsorbents. It also discusses recent application of MSPE to the analysis of trace contaminants in food samples, such as pesticides and veterinary drug residuals, polymer additives, and heavy metals ions. The future development trends of MSPE in food safety analysis are also investigated. High efficiency, low cost, and environmental-friendly food safety detection techniques are expected with the application of MSPE.

Drug pollution in aqueous environment is posing serious global problem, threating the safety of ecosystems and human health, and hence has attracted wide attention. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous inorganic-organic hybrid networks synthesized by multi-dentate organic ligands. Due to their large specific surface area, high adsorption capacity, adjustable porosity, layered structure and recyclable performance, they are considered as important materials for the adsorption and removal of emerging pollutants (ECs) in wastewater and has been widely studied. However, due to their instability and difficulty in recycling in aqueous media, their application as an adsorbent are limited, and hence further investigation and syntheses of materials to overcome this shortcoming remains an arduous task. With these viewpoints, in presented review, the utility of MOFs to adsorption properties and related mechanism to remove drugs viz. antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, antipsychotics, organophosphorus pesticides and other drugs from wastewater are presented. Additionally, rational ideas for constructing water stable MOFs with apt functionalization are discussed that can engender targeted MOFs with improved adsorption efficiency of drugs in wastewater.

Multifunctional magnetic microspheres (Mag@ZnO–Co3O4) with bimetal oxide shell were synthesized via a facile method. The Mag@ZnO–Co3O4 composite was characterized through a vibrating sample magnetometer, N2 adsorption analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy analyses. The structural analysis showed that the as-prepared microsphere possessed a mean diameter of 150 nm, a bimetal oxide shell thickness of ∼10.0 nm, and a magnetic core, which endowed it with good dispersibility, strong magnetism, and excellent adsorption property for oxytetracycline (OTC). Several experimental conditions, such as solution pH, adsorption time, OTC concentration, and ionic strength were systematically investigated.
