Carbon dots (CDs), as a new type of carbon-based nanomaterial, have attracted broad research interest for years, because of their diverse physicochemical properties and favorable attributes like good biocompatibility, unique optical properties, low cost, ecofriendliness, abundant functional groups (e.g., amino, hydroxyl, carboxyl), high stability, and electron mobility. In this Outlook, we comprehensively summarize the classification of CDs based on the analysis of their formation mechanism, micro-/nanostructure and property features, and describe their synthetic methods and optical properties including strong absorption, photoluminescence, and phosphorescence. Furthermore, the recent significant advances in diverse applications, including optical (sensor, anticounterfeiting), energy (light-emitting diodes, catalysis, photovoltaics, supercapacitors), and promising biomedicine, are systematically highlighted. Finally, we envisage the key issues to be challenged, future research directions, and perspectives to show a full picture of CDs-based materials.

Carbon Dots: A New Type of Carbon-Based Nanomaterial with Wide Applications

Fluorescent nanodiamond is a new nanomaterial that possesses several useful properties, including good biocompatibility1, excellent photostability1,2 and facile surface functionalizability2,3. Moreover, when excited by a laser, defect centres within the nanodiamond emit photons that are capable of penetrating tissue, making them well suited for biological imaging applications1,2,4. Here, we show that bright fluorescent nanodiamonds can be produced in large quantities by irradiating synthetic diamond nanocrystallites with helium ions. The fluorescence is sufficiently bright and stable to allow three-dimensional tracking of a single particle within the cell by means of either one- or two-photon-excited fluorescence microscopy. The excellent photophysical characteristics are maintained for particles as small as 25 nm, suggesting that fluorescent nanodiamond is an ideal probe for long-term tracking and imaging in vivo, with good temporal and spatial resolution.

In recent years, solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors have attracted significant attention from researchers in the field of semiconductor devices due to their indispensable properties in the fields of high-temperature event monitoring, anti-terrorism, security and ad hoc network communication. As an important member of the third-generation semiconductors, β-Ga2O3 is considered to be one of the most promising candidates for solar-blind UV detectors due to its ultra-wide band gap (∼4.9 eV), economic efficiency, high radiation resistance and excellent chemical and thermal stability. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review on Ga2O3-based solar-blind UV photodetectors, with a detailed introduction of the developmental process of material growth methods and device manufacturing in the past decade. We classify the currently reported Ga2O3-based solar-blind UV photodetectors (mainly including photoconductive detectors, heterogeneous PN junction detectors and Schottky junction detectors) and summarize their respective superiorities and potentials for improvement. Finally, considering the actual application requirements, we put forward some meaningful suggestions, including energy band engineering and homogeneous epitaxy, for the future development of Ga2O3 material growth and device manufacturing.

Gallium oxide solar-blind ultraviolet photodetectors: a review

Photodynamic therapy is arising as a noninvasive treatment modality for cancer and other diseases. One of the key factors to determine the therapeutic function is the efficiency of photosensitizers (PSs). Opposed to traditional PSs, which show quenched fluorescence and reduced singlet oxygen production in the aggregate state, PSs with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) exhibit enhanced fluorescence and strong photosensitization ability in nanoparticles. Here, the design principles of AIE PSs and their biomedical applications are discussed in detail, starting with a summary of traditional PSs, followed by a comparison between traditional and AIE PSs to highlight the various design strategies and unique features of the latter. Subsequently, the applications of AIE PSs in photodynamic cancer cell ablation, bacteria killing, and image-guided therapy are discussed using charged AIE PSs, AIE PS molecular probes, and AIE PS nanoparticles as examples. These studies have demonstrated the great potential of AIE PSs as effective theranostic agents to treat tumor or bacterial infection. This review hopefully will spur more research interest in AIE PSs for future translational research.

Photosensitizers with Aggregation-Induced Emission: Materials and Biomedical Applications

Ultralong and efficient phosphorescence from silica confined carbon nanodots in aqueous solution

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated in the body and related to many pathophysiological processes. Hence, detection of ROS is indispensable in understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of many diseases. Here, near-infrared (NIR) chemiluminescent (CL) carbon nanodots (CDs) are fabricated for the first time and their CL quantum yield can reach 9.98 × 10-3 einstein mol-1, which is the highest value ever reported for CDs until now. Nanointegration of NIR CDs and peroxalate (P-CDs) through the bridging effect of amphiphilic triblock copolymer can serve as turn-on probes for the detection and imaging of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Considering high efficiency and large penetration depth of NIR photons, the P-CDs are employed in bioimaging H2O2 in vitro and in vivo, and the detection limit can reach 5 × 10-9 m, among the best reported of CDs-based sensors. Moreover, imaging of inflammatory H2O2 in a mouse model of peritonitis is achieved by employing the P-CDs as sensors. The results may provide a clue for the diagnosis and treatment of inflammation or cancers employing CL CDs as sensors.

Near-Infrared Chemiluminescent Carbon Nanodots and Their Application in Reactive Oxygen Species Bioimaging.

The various luminescent properties of carbon nanodots (CDs) reveal fascinating applications in several areas. Here, bright and multicolor chemiluminescence (CL) is realized from CDs, whose CL quantum yield can be optimized by adjusting the energy level alignment between the CDs and 1,2-dioxetanedione intermediate generated from the reaction of peroxalate and hydrogen peroxide. A CL quantum yield of 9.32 × 10-3 Einsteins mol-1, maximal luminance of 3.28 cd m-2, and lifetime of 186.4 s are achieved in red CDs, all of which are the best values ever reported for CDs. As a proof-of-concept prototype, a high-quality information encryption strategy is established via CD based CL imaging techniques by virtue of the high brightness and multicolor CL.

Nanodiamonds: Synthesis, properties, and applications in nanomedicine

A photodetector array has been demonstrated comprising 4 × 4 metal–semiconductor–metal structured Ga2O3 photodetector cells. The photodetector cell exhibited a low dark current of 4.0 × 10−10 A, and its peak responsivity at 256 nm was about 1.2 A W−1 when the bias was 10 V. The UV/visible rejection ratio was more than 4 orders of magnitude with a cut-off wavelength at 265 nm, which indicated that the photodetector had a high solar-blind wavelength selectivity. Due to the benefits of the high quality and uniformity of all the 16 photodetector cells, clear images were obtained by using the photodetector array as an imaging device, which is the first report on solar-blind imaging of Ga2O3 photodetector arrays. The results reported in this paper may provide a strategy to develop solar-blind imaging by integrating Ga2O3-based photodetectors into array configuration.
