In this letter, a simple method for miniaturized dual-band bandpass filters (BPFs) through E-shaped slotlines has been proposed. The slotlines are etched on the edge sides of the substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) cavities coupled with magnetic fields of the resonant modes, which makes the proposed cavity operate below its fundamental resonant frequency. Moreover, out-of-band rejection has been improved and the center frequencies of the passbands would be flexibly controlled. To prove the feasibility of the above method, a dual-band BPF based on two SIW cavities operating at 3.6 and 6.4 GHz has been realized. In addition, another dual-frequency filter with only one SIW cavity has been designed, where both the slotlines and the SIW cavity are regarded as resonators. They have been fabricated on a single layer and the test results are in good agreement with the simulations.

Miniaturized Dual-Band SIW Filters Using E-Shaped Slotlines With Controllable Center Frequencies

A compact on-chip dual-band bandpass filter (BPF) at millimeter-wave frequencies is proposed in 0.15-<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">${\mu }\text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> GaAs technology. To understand the working mechanism of the BPF, an LC equivalent circuit model is presented and analyzed for position estimation of the transmission zeros and poles. For demonstration, an on-chip BPF example is fabricated and tested, whose simulation and measurement are in good agreement. There are two frequency bands at 60.2 and 79.7 GHz with bandwidths of 9% and 6.8%, respectively. The chip, excluding the feedings, is only 0.304 mm <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\times0.464$ </tex-math></inline-formula> mm.

Compact Millimeter-Wave On-Chip Dual-Band Bandpass Filter in 0.15-μm GaAs Technology

This paper presents the numerical and experimental results of a miniaturized half‐mode substrate integrated waveguide HMSIW C‐band pass filter with defected ground structure DGS, using two slots and dumbbell shape defected ground structure. These two slots which are etched on the upper plane of the SIW cavity are used to constitute a multiple‐mode resonator, and the dumbbell‐shape fractal DGS etched on the bottom plane can considerably enhance the filter's performances. The manufactured band‐pass filter in half mode based on SIW technology has a size nearly half of that of a normal filter. The measurements results obtained by CST in C‐band show that the manufactured filter has a large transmitted bandwidth of about 1.53 GHz from 5.97 to 7.5 GHz. The higher measured insertion is about −2.6 dB and the lower return loss measured is about −34 dB. The size of filter design achieved is 7.48 × 38.12 mm2 which make it the more compact in comparison with some published works at the C‐band frequency.

Miniaturized half‐mode SIW band‐pass filter design integrating dumbbell DGS cells

This paper reports on a study of substrate integrated waveguides integrated with gap-coupled (capacitive) excitation to design multipole multiband bandpass filters (BPFs). Waveguide structures are conventionally coupled using inductive aperture to realize a BPF. The capacitive gap-coupled structure is proposed as an alternative for the conventional inductive aperture-coupled ones. It is shown that the proposed structure could operate at the frequencies considerably below the cutoff frequency of the waveguide. Therefore, the filters designed by this technique can be considered as evanescent-mode filters, resulting in a significant size reduction. Moreover, the dual-pole and dual-resonance evanescent-mode BPFs are demonstrated by integrating the new and the conventional evanescent-mode resonators. It is shown that the proposed capacitive excitation enables significant miniaturization and resonates at a small fraction of a 3-D structure cutoff frequency. The proposed integration is analytically discussed using lumped element equivalent circuit accompanied by experimental verification.

Slotted Folded Substrate Integrated Waveguide Band Pass Filter with Enhanced Bandwidth for Ku/k Band Applications

A millimeter-wave dual-band bandpass filter using substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) dual-mode cavities is proposed in this paper. The proposed filter consists of three SIW cavities, and each cavity can provide two resonant modes, the TE201 mode and TE102 mode, as well as a transmission zero. The resonant frequencies of TE201 and TE102 modes can be adjusted by the length and width of the SIW cavity, respectively. And the transmission zero can be adjusted by the location of the coupling window between the SIW cavity and the positions of the input and output ports. An example dual-band bandpass filter is designed, and the center frequencies of the two passbands are 26.73GHz and 31.52GHz, respectively. The 3dB-passbands are 26.24–27.21GHz (3.6%) and 31.2–31.84GHz (2%), respectively, with maximum insertion loss of 0.48dB and 0.67dB, respectively, and return loss larger than 12dB in both pass-bands.

Design of a millimeter-wave dual-band bandpass filter using SIW dual-mode cavities

A millimeter-wave (mmW) wideband band-pass filter (WBF) is proposed and designed by using novel-slotted unites etched on the metal planes of SIW cavities in this paper. The novel-slotted SIW cavity consists of two pairs of same size dumbbell slots etched on both the top and bottom metal planes of the SIW, which acts as a shunt resonator. And there is 90-degree angle rotated between the novel-slotted unites on top and bottom planes. The novel-slotted SIW unit can be used to control the transmission zero and the cutoff frequency at upside. Finally, a five-order millimeter-wave wideband band-pass filter is proposed and fabricated. The measured results show that the filter achieves insertion loss of −1.54 dB at 32.5 GHz, return loss of better than 12.5dB and 3dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 34.6%. A good agreement between simulated and measured results verifies the validity of this design methodology. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 58:2406–2410, 2016

Design of a millimeter‐wave wideband bandpass filter with novel‐slotted substrate integrated waveguide

A new broadband circularly polarized quasi magnetic-electric dipole antenna with single feed is proposed. The electric dipole is a pair of metal strip while the magnetic dipole is a pair of vertical shorted metal plate. The currents on the electric and magnetic dipoles exhibits an inherent phase difference of 90°, therefore the wideband circular polarization performance can be achieved. The simulation results show that −10dB reflection coefficient bandwidth is 35.9% (2.06–2.96GHz) and 3dB axial-ratio bandwidth is 44.3% (1.79–2.81 GHz).
