Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are nanoscale semiconductor crystals with surface ligands that enable their dispersion in solvents. Quantum confinement effects facilitate wave function engineering to sculpt the spatial distribution of charge and spin states and thus the energy and dynamics of QD optical transitions. Colloidal QDs can be integrated in devices using solution-based assembly methods to position single QDs and to create ordered QD arrays. Here, we describe the synthesis, assembly, and photophysical properties of colloidal QDs that have captured scientific imagination and have been harnessed in optical applications. We focus especially on the current understanding of their quantum coherent effects and opportunities to exploit QDs as platforms for quantum information science. Freedom in QD design to isolate and control the quantum mechanical properties of charge, spin, and light presents various approaches to create systems with robust, addressable quantum states. We consider the attributes of QDs for optically addressable qubits in emerging quantum computation, sensing, simulation, and communication technologies, e.g., as robust sources of indistinguishable, single photons that can be integrated into photonic structures to amplify, direct, and tune their emission or as hosts for isolated, coherent spin states that can be coupled to light or to other spins in QD arrays.

Novel Dy and Sm activated BaSi2O5 phosphors: Insights into the structure, intrinsic and extrinsic luminescence, and influence of doping concentration

Exploring outstanding rare-earth activated inorganic phosphors with good thermostability has always been a research focus for high-power white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this study, we report a Sm3+-activated KNa4B2P3O13 (KNBP) powder phase. Its particle morphology, photoluminescence properties, concentration quenching mechanism, thermal quenching mechanism, and chromatic properties are demonstrated. Upon the near-ultraviolet (NUV) irradiation of 402 nm, the powder phase exhibits orange-red visible luminescence performance, originating from typical 4G5/2→6HJ/2 (J = 5, 7, 9) transitions of Sm3+. Importantly, the photoluminescence performance has good thermostability, low correlated color temperature (CCT), and high color purity (CP), indicating its promising application in the NUV-pumped warm white LEDs.

NUV-pumped luminescence of thermally stable samarium-activated alkali metal borophosphate phosphor

In this paper, a new type of Ba2La8(SiO4)6O2: Sm3+ phosphor was synthesized by solid-phase reaction, and the hydrophobic agent was used to restrain the hydrolysis of silicate phosphor. The microstructure, optical properties and electroluminescence properties of the samples were systematically analyzed. The results show that the Ba2La8(SiO4)6O2: xSm3+ phosphors have a strong orange-red emission at 600 nm, which corresponds to the 6G5/2→6H7/2 energy level transition of Sm3+ ions. The optimal luminescence intensity was achieved at the dopant concentration of 10 mol%. The prepared phosphor has good thermal stability, the luminescence intensity at 423 K is still 85% of that at 298 K, and the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) is 22.59%. The ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV–VIS–NIR) spectrum and the density functional theory reveal that the Ba2La8(SiO4)6O2 host can provide an excellent band-gap environment for the luminescent center. In addition, the modified Ba2La8(SiO4)6O2: 0.10Sm3+ phosphor showed excellent hydrophobicity and luminescent properties, with a contact angle of 140.315°, and the luminescent intensity remained 75% of the pre-modified level. The Ba2La8(SiO4)6O2: Sm3+ phosphor has good dispersion in PVA solution and emits bright red light. The above properties indicate that Ba2La8(SiO4)6O2: Sm3+ phosphor has excellent luminescence properties and has broad application prospects. 

A novel orange-red emission of Ba2La8(SiO4)6O2: Sm3+ phosphor with good thermal stability and hydrophobicity

A series of Sm3+ ions doped Sr3Al2O6 phosphors was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method. The crystal structure, morphology and luminescent properties of samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectra. All the samples took on cubic structure with Pa-3 space group. The Sr3Al2O6:Sm3+ phosphors could be excited by 405 nm and emit orange-red light peaked at 565, 609 and 660 nm. The effect of hydrothermal reaction time on the morphology and luminescent properties of phosphor was investigated. The influence of molar fraction of Sm3+ ions on the emission intensity of samples was studied and it has been found that the optimal dosage is 0.01. The calculated results by the first principle indicated that the Sm3+ ions will easily occupy the symmetric center site (Sr1). The results indicated that the luminescent intensity of Sr3Al2O6:Sm3+ phosphors could be modulated by reaction conditions of hydrothermal method.
