The long-term integrity of protected areas (PAs), and hence the maintenance of related ecosystem services (ES), are dependent on the support of local people. In the present study, local people’s perceptions of ecosystem services from PAs and factors that govern local preferences for PAs are assessed. Fourteen study villages were randomly selected from three different protected forest areas and one control site along the southern coast of Cote d’Ivoire. Data was collected through a mixed-method approach, including qualitative semi-structured interviews and a household survey based on hypothetical choice scenarios. Local people’s perceptions of ecosystem service provision was decrypted through qualitative content analysis, while the relation between people’s preferences and potential factors that affect preferences were analyzed through multinomial models. This study shows that rural villagers do perceive a number of different ecosystem services as benefits from PAs in Cote d’Ivoire. The results based on quantitative data also suggest that local preferences for PAs and related ecosystem services are driven by PAs’ management rules, age, and people’s dependence on natural resources.

People, protected areas and ecosystem services: a qualitative and quantitative analysis of local people’s perception and preferences in Côte d’Ivoire

National marine parks (NMPs) represent a category within the marine protected area (MPA) framework, and nearly all countries worldwide have implemented marine protected area or national marine park initiatives. Correspondingly, research on this topic has gradually emerged. Given that existing research tends to focus too much on the perspective of natural sciences such as ecology, this article specifically focuses on humanities research. The relevant literature on national marine parks is organized using a literature review method and mainly analyzed through content analysis. It is summarized into five research areas: park creation research, ecological and economic impact assessment, park community management research, park marine cultural heritage, and new park-planning methods. Through this review, it is found that the research content exhibits characteristics of being “ecology-heavy but humanities-light, impact-heavy but strategy-light, conservation-heavy but development-light, and qualitative-heavy but interdisciplinary-light”. In response to these trends, this paper suggests adopting new planning approaches, implementing participatory management strategies, enhancing community policy guidance, and promoting education on sustainable development. Furthermore, it proposes establishing NMPs focused on marine cultural heritage, creating authoritative park evaluation criteria and research methods, and strengthening diachronic studies, quantitative analysis, and interdisciplinary methods in the humanities.

From Ecology to Humanities: A Review, Insights, and Recommendations on National Marine Parks

The paper addresses sustainability, heritage, management, and communication from UNESCO’s Marine World Heritage (MWH) perspective, analyzing its digital narrative footprint through social media It aims to understand how MWH is conceptualized, managed, and communicated and whether it is framed with sustainability and biocultural values facilitating interactivity, engagement, and multimodal knowledge Hence, a content analysis of the Instagram accounts of the MWH of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) sites and protected areas has been conducted The study included evidence from their Instagram profile, posts, features, and reactions The findings indicated the dearth of a management and communication strategy being shared among and across UNESCO’s MWH of OUV sites and protected areas, capturing the “lifeworld” and the “voice” of the marine heritage as unified They also revealed that nature and human, and biological and socio-ecological ecosystems of MWH of OUV sites and protected areas are not interlinked in marine heritage management and communication featuring the whole and the entirety of the marine heritage site ecosystem The lack of this expansion of meaning and engagement does not facilitate the shift of the route in the marine-scape, from discovery and being listed as World Heritage to human-nature interaction, diversity, dynamicity, and ocean literacy The study contributes to setting the ground rules for strengthening marine heritage management and communication in light of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Ocean Literacy Decade (2021–2030)

Sustainable Biocultural Heritage Management and Communication: The Case of Digital Narrative for UNESCO Marine World Heritage of Outstanding Universal Value

The United Nation's World Heritage System is one of the most extensive conservation systems in the world. The World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has noticed that there are less research on marine heritage compared to other types of world heritage. This review article has reviewed marine heritage study from three aspects: (1) the relationship between community and marine heritage; (2) marine heritage value; and (3) Value, Conservation and Management. This review has concluded that marine heritage study focus on case studies, and there are more studies on conservation and management than other aspects of marine heritage.
