TL;DR: This review encompasses the most important advances in liver functions and hepatotoxicity and analyzes which mechanisms can be studied in vitro and how closely hepatoma, stem cell and iPS cell–derived hepatocyte-like-cells resemble real hepatocytes.
Reactive Oxygen Species as a Signal in Glucose-Stimulated Insulin Secretion
Jingbo Pi,Yushi Bai,Qiang Zhang,Victoria A. Wong,Lisa M. Floering,Kiefer W. Daniel,Jeffrey M. Reece,Jude T. Deeney,Melvin E. Andersen,Barbara E. Corkey,Sheila Collins +10 more
TL;DR: Findings suggest that H2O2 derived from glucose metabolism is one of the metabolic signals for insulin secretion, whereas oxidative stress may disturb its signaling function.

Identification of novel NRF2-regulated genes by ChIP-Seq: influence on retinoid X receptor alpha
Brian N. Chorley,Michelle R. Campbell,Xuting Wang,Mehmet Karaca,Deepa Sambandan,Fatu Bangura,Peng Xue,Jingbo Pi,Steven R. Kleeberger,Douglas A. Bell +9 more
TL;DR: Validation of selected candidate genes using parallel ChIP techniques and in NRF2-silenced cell lines indicated that the expression of about two-thirds of the candidates are likely to be directly NRF1-dependent including retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRA), which has implications for response to retinoids treatments and adipogenesis.

Evaluation of the association between arsenic and diabetes: A National Toxicology Program workshop review

TL;DR: The evidence is insufficient to conclude that arsenic is associated with diabetes in lower exposure in populations with relatively high exposure levels, although recent studies with better measures of outcome and exposure support an association.

ROS signaling, oxidative stress and Nrf2 in pancreatic beta-cell function
Jingbo Pi,Qiang Zhang,Jingqi Fu,Jingqi Fu,Courtney G. Woods,Courtney G. Woods,Yongyong Hou,Yongyong Hou,Barbara E. Corkey,Sheila Collins,Sheila Collins,Melvin E. Andersen +11 more
TL;DR: This review focuses on the emerging evidence that reactive oxygen species (ROS) derived from glucose metabolism, such as H(2)O(2), act as metabolic signaling molecules for glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) in pancreatic beta-cells and proposed cellular adaptive response to oxidative stress challenge.
