This paper presents an experimental and analytical study of rate-dependent ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) behavior. UHPFRC three- and four-point bending response was determined on plates subjected to quasi-static loading. Drop weight tests were performed in order to apply dynamic three-point-bending loading to UHPFRC plates. In addition, uniaxial tensile tests were performed at different strain rates. A cross-sectional bending model related the uniaxial tensile behavior to the bending response with good agreement. The equivalent static response of the plate specimens in the drop weight tests was successfully determined with nonlinear mass–spring models. The results of this study show a significantly increased strength and fracture energy of the dynamically loaded plates when compared to quasi-static loading and confirm the validity of the analytical modeling.

On the emergence of 3D printable Engineered, Strain Hardening Cementitious Composites (ECC/SHCC)

Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) have demonstrated superior mechanical and durability performance than conventional concrete. In the micromechanical reinforcing system of ECC, fibers play a pivotal role in establishing the ultrahigh tensile ductility and autogenous crack width control. This article reviews the state-of-the-art of discontinuous micro-fibers as intrinsic reinforcement of ECC regarding technical performance as well as environmental and economic impacts. Mechanical properties of ECC made with different micro-fibers, man-made or natural, and their embodied energy, emissions and material cost, are comprehensively surveyed. Further, studies on fiber hybridization are discussed regarding the combination of different types of fibers to form synergetic reinforcements that mitigate total material cost, and potentially enhance the composite performance. Recommendations on fiber selections are highlighted and directions for future research are suggested.

Discontinuous micro-fibers as intrinsic reinforcement for ductile Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC)

Dynamic compressive behaviour of spiral steel fibre reinforced concrete in split Hopkinson pressure bar tests

The characteristics of engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) subjected to dynamic tensile loading and high-velocity projectile impact have been investigated and are reported in this paper. Hybrid-fiber ECC containing a combination of high-modulus steel fibers and relatively low modulus polyethylene fibers was adopted to achieve a desired balance between the ultimate strength and the strain capacity of the material required for impact- and blast-resistant structures. Dynamic uniaxial tensile tests at varying strain rates of 2× 10−6 to 0.2 s−1 were carried out, and ECC was found to be able to provide much higher enhancement in tensile strength than plain concrete and still be able to maintain pronounced tensile strain-hardening behavior. Behavior of hybrid-fiber engineered cementitious composites subjected to dynamic tensile loading and projectile impact

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to evaluate the damage and failure mode of hybrid-fiber engineered cementitious composite (ECC) panels caused by large projectiles or fragments. The aim is to quantify the extent to which hybrid-fiber ECC improves the resistance of blast panels against impact loading. Drop weight tests were conducted on full-scale hybrid-fiber ECC blast/shelter panels (2 m×1 m×0.05–0.1 m) to study their response and performance under impact loading. Conventional steel reinforced concrete (RC) and steel fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) blast panels were also tested to identify the advantages of using ECC in this application. Performance of Hybrid-Fiber ECC Blast/Shelter Panels Subjected to Drop Weight Impact

Prediction of the prepacked grouting process provides useful information for site engineers to decide a proper spacing of injection point and foresee the injection pressure and flow rate to achieve a better quality control of concrete. Prediction methods based on both experimental and analytical work are proposed in this study to analyze the flow of cement grout through single-size aggregate media during the prepacked grouting process. Radial flow is employed to present a basic description of common cases in practice. Darcy’s law modified for Bingham fluid (Darcy approach) and Buckingham-Reiner equation modified for porous media (capillary approach) are developed to determine and analyze the flow. Evaluations of the viscosity of cement grout and permeability of the aggregate media are carefully designed and relevant parameters established for prediction analysis. Validation of the proposed analyses is confirmed by comparing the predicted results with monitored values from grouting tests.
