To protect carbon/carbon (C/C) composites against oxidation, YSZ-La-Mo-Si (YSZ-LMS) heterogeneous coating was prepared by the plasma spraying using YSZ (Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2), MoSi2 and LaB6 as raw materials Microstructure and surface chemistry of the coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) Moreover, the thermogravimetric and isothermal oxidation results indicated that the YSZ-LMS coating revealed superior oxidation protective ability at elevated temperatures, which protected the C/C composites from oxidation for 50 h at 1773 K with a mass loss of 058% The generation of SiO2, ZrSiO4, Y2SiO5 and La2O3 expanded the volume of solid phase and decreased the volatilization of SiO2, forming a denser Zr-Y-La-Si-O oxide glass layer Such volume expansion promoted the formation of compressive stress within the coating at high temperature, which restrains the initiation and propagation of cracks and facilitates the oxidation resistance of the coatings for C/C composites The corresponding high temperature oxidation activation energy of the coated C/C composites at 1573–1773 K is calculated to be 74466 kJ mol−1

Ultrahigh temperature ceramic HfB2-SiC coating by liquid phase sintering method to protect carbon materials from oxidation

HfB2-20%wtSiC composite coating was prepared by liquid phase sintering method. After modification of HfB2 phase, the initial oxidation consumptions of the SiC coated samples were delayed from 500 ℃ to 800 ℃. Due to the higher oxidation activity of HfB2, the sufficient generated B2O3 is capable of inhibiting oxidation consumption of carbon substrate in oxidation activation region (800 ℃-1000 ℃) and fastest oxidation region (1000 ℃-1280 ℃). The enhanced oxidation activity of SiC above 1000℃ leads to the increased generation of SiO2, inhibiting the evaporation of B2O3 through the formation of Hf-B-Si-O glass layer, improving its stability and oxidation resistance above 1000℃. The heterogeneous refractory Hf-Oxides embedded in Hf-B-Si-O glass layer play role of reinforcement phases, restricting generation and spread of cracks. The inerting effect of Hf-B-Si-O glass layer strengthened with the increase of thermogravimetric analysis (TG) recycle oxidation times, indicating promising oxidation inhibition potential of the coating in dynamic aerobic environment.

Dynamic oxidation protective behaviors and mechanisms of HfB2-20wt%SiC composite coating for carbon materials

A MoSi2/SiO2-B2O3-Al2O3 double layer coating was prepared on the surface of SiC-coated carbon/carbon (C/C) composites by pulse arc discharge deposition (PADD). The phase compositions and morphology were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The oxidation resistance and thermal cycling property of the multi-layer coating were investigated. Results indicate that the multi-layer coating exhibit excellent anti-oxidation property. The MoSi2/SiO2-B2O3-Al2O3 coating can effectively protect C/C composites from oxidation in air at 1073 K for 200 h with negligible weight loss and 1773 K for 200 h with a weight loss of 0.7%. Meanwhile, the coating can endure the thermal cycling for 50 cycles between 1773 K and room temperature (298 K). The formation of B2O3 glass phase at low temperature and borosilicate glass at high temperature are the main reasons for the good oxidation resistance of the coating.

Microstructure and oxidation protection of a MoSi2/SiO2-B2O3-Al2O3 coating for SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites

Cf/C–SiC–MoSi2 composites were prepared via a simple hydrothermal method. The kinetics of the hydrothermal penetration process, the mechanical properties, and ablation behaviors of the composites were investigated. Results showed that the penetration activation energy was only 51.3 kJ mol−1. The flexural strength of the composites was 111.7 MPa. The Cf/C–SiC–MoSi2 composites exhibited good ablation properties after being exposed to plasma flame at 2300 °C. During the ablation, molten SiO2 could prevent carbon from oxidation. Moreover, the transformation from MoO2 to gaseous MoO3 consumed considerable amounts of oxygen and absorbed a large amount of heat, which prevented the composites from further ablation.
