Migratory birds can navigate over tens of thousands of kilometers with an accuracy unobtainable for human navigators. To do so, they use their brains. In this review, we address how birds sense navigation- and orientation-relevant cues and where in their brains each individual cue is processed. When little is currently known, we make educated predictions as to which brain regions could be involved. We ask where and how multisensory navigational information is integrated and suggest that the hippocampus could interact with structures that represent maps and compass information to compute and constantly control navigational goals and directions. We also suggest that the caudolateral nidopallium could be involved in weighing conflicting pieces of information against each other, making decisions, and helping the animal respond to unexpected situations. Considering the gaps in current knowledge, some of our suggestions may be wrong. However, our main aim is to stimulate further research in this fascinating field.

The Neural Basis of Long-Distance Navigation in Birds.

Although the occurrence of neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) to interferon (IFN)-beta has been acknowledged since the pivotal trials of IFN-beta in multiple sclerosis (MS), the effect of these antibodies has for several reasons been debated. The main reason for the controversies has been insufficient knowledge of the fact that clinically relevant NAbs do not appear until 12-18 months after initiation of IFN-beta therapy which make studies of 2 years or less unsuited to assess the clinical relevance of NAbs. Further, changes in NAb affinity occur and contribute to increase NAb effects by time. The present paper reviews our current knowledge of NAbs and stresses the importance of using measurements of NAbs routinely. It is concluded that NAb titres are important for the biological response to IFN-beta. Patients with low or intermediate titres may have preserved a full or partial biological response and might still benefit from IFN-beta therapy. However, persistent high titres of NAbs indicate an abrogation of the biological response and, hence, absence of therapeutic efficacy, and this observation should lead to a change of therapy. The application of the existing information about NAbs in clinical practice would lead to improved efficacy of IFN-beta treatment for the benefit of patients with MS.

There are five approved, partially effective, parenteral disease-modifying therapies for multiple sclerosis (MS), including three interferon-β preparations, glatiramer acetate and the antineoplastic agent mitoxantrone. A sixth drug, natalizumab, was withdrawn from the market in 2005 but could return with increased safety measures. Careful surveillance for, and management of, the minor and serious adverse effects associated with these therapies in routine practice provides the best opportunity for maintaining compliance and achieving maximal therapeutic efficacy. This review outlines the strategies for the prevention, identification and management of the complications associated with administration and ongoing use of current MS therapies. These skills will become increasingly important to those caring for MS patients as contemporary treatment regimens become increasingly complex.

The present study is the first attempt to make comparisons of the visual response properties between tectal and thalamic neurons with spatially overlapping receptive fields by using extracellular recording and computer mapping techniques. The results show that in neuronal pairs about 70% of thalamic cells have excitatory receptive field alone, whereas 85% of tectal cells possess an excitatory receptive field surrounded by an inhibitory receptive field. In 70% of pairs the tectal cells are selective for direction of motion different from that which the thalamic cells prefer. Most thalamic cells prefer high speeds (80-160 degrees/s), whereas tectal cells prefer intermediate (40 degrees/s) or low (10-20 degrees/s) speeds. Photergic and scotergic cells exist in the thalamus but not in the tectum. These results provide evidence that tectal and thalamic cells extract different visual information from the same region of the visual field. The functional significance of these differences is discussed.
