Extreme climates have become frequent nowadays, causing increased heat stress in human daily life. Personal thermal management (PTM), a technology that controls the human body's microenvironment, has become a promising strategy to address heat stress. While effective in ordinary environments, traditional high-performance fibers, such as ultrafine, porous, highly thermally conductive, and phase change materials, fall short when dealing with harsh conditions or large temperature fluctuations. Aerogels, a third-generation superinsulation material, have garnered extensive attention among researchers for their thermal management applications in building energy conservation, transportation, and aerospace, attributed to their extremely low densities and thermal conductivity. While aerogels have historically faced challenges related to weak mechanical strength and limited secondary processing capacity, recent advancements have witnessed notable progress in the development of wearable aerogels for PTM. This progress underscores their potential applications within extremely harsh environments, serving as self-powered smart devices and sensors. This Review offers a timely overview of wearable aerogels and their PTM applications with a particular focus on their wearability and suitability. Finally, the discussion classifies five types of PTM applications based on aerogel function: thermal insulation, heating, cooling, adaptive regulation (involving thermal insulation, heating, and cooling), and utilization of aerogels as wearable smart devices. 

Wearable Aerogels for Personal Thermal Management and Smart Devices

Abstract Polyimide aerogels have been extensively used in thermal protection domain because they possess a combination of intrinsic characteristics of aerogels and unique features of polyimide. However, polyimide aerogels still suffer significant thermally induced shrinkage at temperatures above 200 °C, restricting their application at high temperature. Here, a novel “double‐phase‐networking” strategy is proposed for fabricating a lightweight and mechanically robust polyimide hybrid aerogel by forming silica–zirconia‐phase networking skeletons, which possess exceptional dimensional stability in high‐temperature environments and superior thermal insulation. The rational mechanism responsible for the formation of double‐phase‐networking aerogel is further explained, generally attributing to chemical crosslinking reactions and supramolecular hydrogen bond interactions derived from the main chains of polyimide and silane/zirconia precursor/sol. The as‐prepared aerogels exhibit excellent high‐temperature (270 °C) dimensional stability (5.09% ± 0.16%), anti‐thermal‐shock properties, and low thermal conductivity. Moreover, the hydrophobic treatment provides aerogels high water resistance with water contact angle of 136.9°, further suggestive of low moisture content of 3.6% after exposure to 70 °C and 85% relative humidity for 64 h. The proposed solution for significantly enhancing high‐temperature dimensional stability and thermal insulation provides a great supporting foundation for fabricating high‐performance organic aerogels as thermal protection materials in aerospace. 

Double‐Phase‐Networking Polyimide Hybrid Aerogel with Exceptional Dimensional Stability for Superior Thermal Protection System

Passive daytime radiative cooling polymeric materials: Structure design, fabrication, and applications

Aerogels, as kinetic energy absorbing materials, can find crucial applications for safeguarding in transportation, sports, buildings, construction, and aerospace. However, the highly porous structure makes it extremely fragile for endurance usage. In this study, a half‐full filled structure has been proposed, and the concept has been demonstrated based on shear thickening fluid (STF) and chemically vapor deposited carbon nanotube aerogels (CNTAs), in which the outer part of CNTA is filled with STF while the inner core keeping unfilled. Chemical vapor deposition significantly enhances the elasticity and electromagnetic shielding performance of the native CNTA. The half‐full filled aerogels (HFFA) show a 348% increase in energy absorption compared to the CNTA. At the same time, the density, electronic conductivity, and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the HFFAs are 0.117 g cm−3, 1213 S m−1, and 69.52 dB (which is a neglectable reduction of 0.63% compared to native CNTA), respectively. The HFFA strategy provides an alternative route to fabricate robust aerogels with a remarkable increase of target properties while maintaining other properties, such as low density, high pore volume, and conductivity, with limited changes.

With the aid of a three-dimensional electromagnetic field analysis software HFSS, the transfer function S21 of the Microwave and Millimeter-wave Module is taken as an optimization objective, all process parameters that affect the transfer function are taken as variables, and then quantitative and qualitative analyses are carried out. Qualitative analysis is to get the key parameters that affect S21 through studying the action law and influence degree of each parameter on S21 parameters; quantitative analysis is to find out the optimal combination of parameters through the simulation of each parameter, so as to guide the electrical, structural design and assembly process.
