Digital twins technology (DTT) is an application framework with breakthrough rules. With the deep integration of the virtual information world and physical space, it becomes the basis for realizing intelligent machining production lines, which is of great significance to intelligent processing in industrial manufacturing. This review aims to study the application of DTT and the Metaverse in fluid machinery in the past 5 years by summarizing the application status of pumps and fans in fluid machinery from the perspective of DTT and the Metaverse through the collection, classification, and summary of relevant literature in the past 5 years. The research found that in addition to relatively mature applications in intelligent manufacturing, DTT and Metaverse technologies play a critical role in the development of new pump products and technologies and are widely used in numerical simulation and fault detection in fluid machinery for various pumps and other fields. Among fan-type fluid machinery, twin fans can comprehensively use technologies, such as perception, calculation, modeling, and deep learning, to provide efficient smart solutions for fan operation detection, power generation visualization, production monitoring, and operation monitoring. Still, there are some limitations. For example, real-time and accuracy cannot fully meet the requirements in the mechanical environment with high-precision requirements. However, there are also some solutions that have achieved good results. For instance, it is possible to achieve significant noise reduction and better aerodynamic performance of the axial fan by improving the sawtooth parameters of the fan and rearranging the sawtooth area. However, there are few application cases of the Metaverse in fluid machinery. The cases are limited to operating real equipment from a virtual environment and require the combination of virtual reality and DTT. The application effect still needs further verification.

Application of Digital Twins and Metaverse in the Field of Fluid Machinery Pumps and Fans: A Review

Excitation force on a pump-jet propeller: The effect of the blade number

The propulsor is one of the main noise sources of an underwater vehicle. The pump-jet operating under hull condition is in a typical non-uniform strong anisotropic turbulent flow field. In this paper, the wake flow characteristics and unsteady performance of a pump-jet propulsor under hull condition are numerically investigated. RANS method and LES method are used to evaluate and compare the ability of solving vortex structure, pressure distribution and unsteady force. LES method can capture the interaction between different vortex systems, and the vortex shedding process of the stator wake and appendage wake. These lead to that the frequency spectra of fluctuation pressure have peaks in the low frequency range for LES method. For unsteady force spectrum, the frequency of maximum amplitude of a single blade is mainly affected by relative intensities of the stator wake and appendage wake. "Humps" appear near the blade passing frequency and its multiples for unsteady force spectrum of the rotor for LES method. The blade passing frequency in the rotor force spectrum is generated by the phase cancellation between different blades. The completeness of rotor blade phase cancellation is mainly affected by the intensity of the non-stationarity in the flow field. Overall, it is sufficient to clarify the hydrodynamic performance and the characteristics of fluctuation pressure distribution of the pump-jet with RANS method. The LES method is necessary to obtain reasonable transient characteristics of the unsteady force and vortex system interaction for the pump-jet under hull condition.

Wake flow characteristics and unsteady performance of a pump-jet propulsor under hull condition

This paper investigates the noise reduction performance of biomimetic hydrofoils with wavy leading edge and the corresponding mechanisms. We employ Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approach and permeable Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (PFW–H) method to predict cavitation noise around the baseline and biomimetic hydrofoils. The results show that the wavy leading edge can effectively reduce the high-frequency noise, but has little effect on the low-frequency noise. Further analyses and discussions deal with the noise reduction mechanisms. The main source for the low-frequency noise is the cavity volume acceleration, while the wavy leading edge has little effect on it. The high-frequency noise sources, related to the surface pressure fluctuations and the turbulence characteristics, are significantly suppressed by the wavy leading edge, thus decreasing the high-frequency noise intensity. Our investigation indicates that the wavy leading edge has great prospects for cavitation noise reduction technique. 

LES investigation of the wavy leading edge effect on cavitation noise

A comparative study on the wake dynamics of a pump-jet propulsor (PJP) and a ducted propeller (DP) is conducted to investigate the effects of the pre-swirl stator and corresponding stator–rotor interaction on the wake evolution and destabilization mechanisms of a PJP system. The flow field analysis, vortex structure identification, and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) analysis are carried out based on the numerical results obtained from delayed detached eddy simulations. The numerical hydrodynamic loading and flow field of the PJP are compared with experimental results, and they are in good agreement. Compared with the DP, the stator trailing vortices of the PJP interact with the rotor trailing vortices as well as the hub vortex, accelerating their diffusion and viscous dissipation. The pre-swirl stator triggers the generation of secondary vortices and moderates the spiral behavior of tip leakage vortices, which dominates the wake instability of PJP. The DMD analysis revealed that the wake field evolution is primarily characterized by the different mode structures at blade passing frequency and its multiples, especially in the PJP due to its strong stator–rotor interaction. The modal energy decays faster in the PJP wake field owing to its more turbulent and earlier instability. The hub vortex plays an important role in the wake dynamics of the DP.

The low-pressure turbine (LPT) has become a potential noise source for future ultra-high by-pass ratio engines. In this paper, the feasibility and mechanism of wavy leading edge (WLE) noise control in the LPT cascade model are analyzed. The flow field and acoustic data are obtained with the large eddy simulation and Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings methods, which are validated using experimental data. The acoustic results are compared for different models; the maximum noise reduction can achieve 8.6 and 3.7 dBA in the frequency bands of FR#2 (315–4000 Hz) and FR#4 (6300–16 000 Hz), respectively; the noise reduction does not vary proportionally to the WLE parameter. The noise source is identified in the baseline model, and then the effect of WLE amplitude and wavelength on the noise source and its control on pressure fluctuations are evaluated. The pressure statistics demonstrate that WLE with a smaller wavelength and a larger amplitude can reduce the impingement of stator wakes on the leading edge of the rotor and stabilize the pressure fluctuation. To analyze the mechanism of WLEs on noise control, the pressure spectrum in terms of amplitude and coherence coefficient is utilized to explain the excellent noise performance of the WLE model in FR#2. The proposed similarity coefficient of coherence can quantify the destructive interference level and thus the coherence characteristics of the sound source. Generally, the noise reduction level can be predicted by the combination of the similarity coefficient and the amplitude spectrum of the pressure fluctuations for the WLE models.

The control of the excitation force of pump-jets is of great significance for the stealth performance of submarines. In a previous study, the authors found that the sinusoidal unevenly spaced rotor blades (SUSR) can control the excitation force of the rotor, but the suppression effect is limited by the low degree of freedom. This paper proposes random unevenly spaced rotor blades (RUSR) with higher degrees of freedom, achieving twice the suppression effect of the SUSR. A method for batch generation of RUSRs is proposed in this paper, and a large number of RUSRs are generated. The numerical simulation study was carried out by selecting the RUSRs with better suppression effects through theoretical methods, and the numerical simulation method used was improved based on the previous study. The RUSR also has an impact on the excitation force of the duct. The conclusion of this paper has guiding significance for the low excitation design of pump-jets and has the potential to promote the use of unevenly spaced rotor blades in the field of pump-jets.
