Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are considered as potential replacements to lithium-ion batteries for large scale energy storage applications due to abundant potassium resources and low cost. However, it is a rough road to find suitable materials with high capacity and cycling stability due to the large K ion radius. In this study, a simple method, electrodeposition, is used to anchor SnO2 nanoparticles on three dimensional carbon foam (SnO2@CF) as a freestanding anode for PIBs. The prepared freestanding SnO2@CF electrode features a three dimensional (3D) conductive carbon frame and SnO2 nanoparticles, which can enhance electron transfer, prevent SnO2 from losing electrical contact after large volume changes and facilitate electrolyte infiltration and K ion transfer. As expected, SnO2@CF delivers a high K storage specific capacity, and outstanding cycling stability (231.7 mA h g−1 after 400 cycles at 1 A g−1) and rate performance (371.4, 307.6, 247.3 and 143.5 mA h g−1 at 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 A g−1, respectively). Meanwhile, the phase transition of the SnO2@CF electrode is tracked during the charge and discharge processes in PIBs. This study provides a facile method to prepare freestanding electrode materials and a promising anode material for PIBs.

SnO2 nanoparticles anchored on carbon foam as a freestanding anode for high performance potassium-ion batteries

Adjusting the electromagnetic parameters by decorating magnetic particles for improved impedance matching is an important strategy for obtaining lightweight and efficient carbon-based electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials. In this work, a tomato-like hierarchical porous FeCo/C@WC was prepared for efficient microwave absorption, in which a lightweight anisotropic wood carbon aerogel (WC) was used as a structural assistant, and a MOF-derived graphitized carbon-coated FeCo alloy (FeCo/C) served as a dielectric/magnetic regulator. The tomato-like polystage micro-nano construction was made up of a “pericarp” left by the parallel channels of natural wood, a “pulp tissue” of the MOF-derived nanocage and “seeds” of FeCo nanoalloys embedded in a nanocage. The macroporous wooden shell and mesoporous carbon nanocage gave the composite an excellent hierarchical dielectric coupling network. Meanwhile, the uniformly dispersed FeCo nanoparticles enhanced the magnetic loss to the carbonaceous substrate, allowing for better impedance matching. As a result, the constructed multidimensional FeCo/C@WC exhibited superior wave absorbing ability, in which the maximum reflection loss (RL) reached −47.6 dB and the wide absorption bandwidth was up to 8.9 GHz. These excellent results confirmed that wood-based electromagnetic absorption devices may have a good application prospect.

Carbon coating of electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Although lithium-ion batteries have already had a considerable impact on making our lives smarter, healthier, and cleaner by powering smartphones, wearable devices, and electric vehicles, demands for significant improvement in battery performance have grown with the continuous development of electronic devices. Developing novel anode materials offers one of the most promising routes to meet these demands and to resolve issues present in existing graphite anodes, such as a low theoretical capacity and poor rate capabilities. Significant improvements over current commercial batteries have been identified using the electrospinning process, owing to a simple processing technique and a wide variety of electrospinnable materials. It is important to understand previous work on nanofiber anode materials to establish strategies that encourage the implementation of current technological developments into commercial lithium-ion battery production, and to advance the design of novel nanofiber anode materials that will be used in the next-generation of batteries. This review identifies previous research into electrospun nanofiber anode materials based on the type of electrochemical reactions present and provides insights that can be used to improve conventional lithium-ion battery performances and to pioneer novel manufacturing routes that can successfully produce the next generation of batteries.
