Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.

On September 14, 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory simultaneously observed a transient gravitational-wave signal. The signal sweeps upwards in frequency from 35 to 250 Hz with a peak gravitational-wave strain of 1.0×10(-21). It matches the waveform predicted by general relativity for the inspiral and merger of a pair of black holes and the ringdown of the resulting single black hole. The signal was observed with a matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 24 and a false alarm rate estimated to be less than 1 event per 203,000 years, equivalent to a significance greater than 5.1σ. The source lies at a luminosity distance of 410(-180)(+160)  Mpc corresponding to a redshift z=0.09(-0.04)(+0.03). In the source frame, the initial black hole masses are 36(-4)(+5)M⊙ and 29(-4)(+4)M⊙, and the final black hole mass is 62(-4)(+4)M⊙, with 3.0(-0.5)(+0.5)M⊙c(2) radiated in gravitational waves. All uncertainties define 90% credible intervals. These observations demonstrate the existence of binary stellar-mass black hole systems. This is the first direct detection of gravitational waves and the first observation of a binary black hole merger.

Heavy metal pollution in agriculture is a significant problem that endangers human health. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an emerging technique for material and elemental analysis, especially heavy metals, based on atomic emission spectroscopy. The LIBS technique has been widely used for rapid detection of heavy metals with its advantages of convenient operation, simultaneous detection of multi-elements, wide range of elements, and no requirement for the state and quantity of samples. However, the development of LIBS is limited by its detection sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD). Therefore, in order to improve the detection sensitivity and LOD of LIBS, it is necessary to enhance the LIBS signal to achieve the purpose of detecting heavy metal elements in agriculture. This review mainly introduces the basic instruments and principles of LIBS and summarizes the methods of enhanced LIBS signal detection of heavy metal elements in agriculture over the past 10 years. The three main approaches to enhancing LIBS are sample pretreatment, adding laser pulses, and using auxiliary devices. An enhanced LIBS signal may improve the LOD of heavy metal elements in agriculture and the sensitivity and stability of the LIBS technique. The enhanced LIBS technique will have a broader prospect in agricultural heavy metal monitoring and can provide technical support for developing heavy metal detection instruments.

Enhanced Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for Heavy Metal Detection in Agriculture: A Review

Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and characteristic variables selection methods were used to develop a quick method for the determination of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents in Sargassum horneri. Calibration models for cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in Sargassum horneri were established using partial least square regression methods with full variables (full-PLSR). The PLSR calibration models were established by four characteristic variables selection methods, including interval partial least square (iPLS), competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), correlation coefficient (CC), and genetic algorithm (GA). The results showed that the performance of the four calibration models, namely iPLS-PLSR, CARS-PLSR, CC-PLSR, and GA-PLSR, was better than the full-PLSR calibration model. The iPLS method was best in the performance of the models. For iPLS-PLSR, the determination coefficient (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and residual predictive deviation (RPD) of the prediction set were as follows: 0.8955, 0.8232%, and 3.0934 for cellulose, 0.8669, 0.4697%, and 2.7406 for hemicellulose, and 0.7307, 0.7533%, and 1.9272 for lignin, respectively. These findings indicate that the NIR calibration models can be used to predict cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents in Sargassum horneri quickly and accurately.

Abstract Background Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) exhibits a crucial role in multiple human malignancies. The expression of lncRNA LINC00511, reportedly, is aberrantly up-regulated in several types of tumors. Our research was aimed at deciphering the role and mechanism of LINC00511 in the progression of cervical cancer (CC). Method Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed to quantify the expression levels of LINC00511, miR-497-5p and MAPK1 mRNA in CC tissues and cell lines. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), 5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine (BrdU) and Transwell assays were conducted for detecting the proliferation, migration and invasion of CC cells. Dual-luciferase reporter gene experiments were performed to verify the targeting relationships amongst LINC00511, miR-497-5p and MAPK1. Besides, MAPK1 expression in CC cells was detected via Western blot after LINC00511 and miR-497-5p were selectively regulated. Results Up-regulation of LINC00511 expression in CC tissues and cell lines was observed, which was in association with tumor size, clinical stage and lymph node metastasis of the patients. LINC00511 overexpression facilitated the proliferation, migration and invasion of CC cells, while opposite effects were observed after knockdown of LINC00511. Mechanistically, LINC00511 was capable of targeting miR-497-5p and up-regulating MAPK1 expression. Conclusion LINC00511/miR-497-5p/MAPK1 axis regulates CC progression.
