In the competitive global marketplace, business organizations often need to team up and operate as a virtual enterprise to achieve common business goals. Since the business environment of a virtual enterprise is highly dynamic, it is necessary to develop a workflow technology that is capable of handling dynamic workflows across enterprise boundaries. The paper describes a dynamic workflow model and a dynamic workflow management system for modeling and controlling the execution of inter-organizational business processes. The model extends the underlying model of WfMC's WPDL by adding connectors, events, triggers and rules as its modeling constructs, encapsulating activity definitions, and allowing e-service requests as a part of the activity specification. The workflow management system makes use of an event and rule server to trigger business rules during the enactment of workflow processes to enforce business constraints and policies and/or to modify the process model at run-time. It also provides a mechanism to dynamically bind e-service requests to e-services.

Achieving dynamic inter-organizational workflow management by integrating business processes, events and rules

A method and system for automated coordination and organization of electronic communications in enterprises optimizes a communications network, intelligently streamlining communications and enabling workflow within enterprise applications. The system allows a user to use whatever authoring tool the user is already familiar with, such as email or word-processing, to immediately publish that communication, making use of re-usable content and templates and then automatically routing that information vie the best channel to the intended recipient. The recipient is able to direct the format and mode of the incoming communications as well, based on sender, role, type, and action requirement. The underlying engine for streamlining communications injects underlying metadata so that emails are easier to manage and automate. Finally, the system collects information about the overall system in order to improve communication flow.

Method and system for automated coordination and organization of electronic communications in enterprises

In one embodiment, a system is provided for centrally managing core enterprise reference data associated with an enterprise. A centralized master repository contains the core enterprise reference data. An internal services framework coupled to the centralized master repository provides internal services for managing the core enterprise reference data within the centralized master repository, one or more of the internal services having direct access to the core enterprise reference data stored in the centralized master repository for management purposes. An infrastructure services layer coupled to the centralized master repository includes: (1) a back side data access layer that (a) provides bulk data transfers of core enterprise reference data between the centralized master repository and one or more external operational systems according to one or more enterprise-level business workflows, and (b) provides the external operational systems with indirect access, for operational purposes, to associated external operation services within the system that indirectly access the core enterprise reference data stored in the centralized master repository; and (2) a front side data access layer that (a) transfers control data from the external operational systems to the system to control operations of the system, and (b) provides the external operational systems with direct access to certain of the internal services that directly access the core enterprise reference data within the centralized core repository.

Master Data Management System for Centrally Managing Core Reference Data Associated with an Enterprise

An automated workflow services system can accommodate a wide variety of workflow scenarios. A composition service, a constraint service, and a tracking service can be provided to client programs. The composition service can support client-directed instantiation of actions for activity flows. Activity flows can be based on an activity model, constructed on an ad hoc basis, or a combination thereof. Actions can be added to an activity flow at execution time of the activity flow. The tracking service can track messages to and from the actions.

Workflow services architecture

The "Grid" is an emerging infrastructure for coordinating access across autonomous organizations to distributed, heterogeneous computation and data resources. Data grids are being built around the world as the next generation data handling systems for sharing, publishing, and preserving data residing on storage systems located in multiple administrative domains. A data grid provides logical namespaces for users, digital entities and storage resources to create persistent identifiers for controlling access, enabling discovery, and managing wide area latencies. This paper introduces data grids and describes data grid use cases. The relevance of data grids to digital libraries and persistent archives is demonstrated, and research issues in data grids and grid dataflow management systems are discussed.

This paper presents an infrastructure and a mechanism for achieving dynamic Inter-enterprise workflow management using e-services provided by collaborative e-business enterprises. E-services are distributed services that can be accessed programmatically on the Internet, using SOAP messages and the HTTP protocol. In this work, we categorize e-services according to their business types and manage them in a UDDI-enabled constraint-based Broker Server. E-service requests are specified in the activities of a process model according to some standardized e-service templates and are bound to the proper service providers at run-time by using a constraint-based, dynamic service binding mechanism. The workflow management system is dynamic in the sense that the actual business organizations, which take part in a business process, are not determined until run-time. We have extended the traditional workflow process modeling by including e-service requests in activity specifications and extended the Web Service Description Language (WSDL) by including constraints in both service specifications and service requests so that the selection of e-service providers can be more accurately performed.

In this paper we present our vision of the Internet enterprise: a highly interoperable, virtual enterprise infrastructure for individuals, small businesses, and large corporations. In the Internet enterprise (IE), any service provider can enable its business to be programmatically accessible on the Internet (becomes an e-service). Enabled by a scalable brokering service and an inter-organizational workflow facility, e-services offered by autonomous service providers could be composed into an "Internet workflow". This paper describes this vision through an architecture that treats e-services as workflow participants in Internet-wide workflow automation applications. We present the architecture and implementation of three core components that enable the Internet Enterprise. These are: (1) BizBuilder, an e-service framework, (2) Sangam, a scalable, hierarchical brokering community based on UDDI, and (3) a dynamic workflow engine that uses e-services as entities, to create and enact workflow models. Collectively, these three components empower the Internet as a "public enterprise", where virtually any person or organization can design workflow models, and hence create new businesses, using available, competing e-services.
