If lightning strikes on an overhead line connected with a cable, an over voltage will invade into this cable and induct an over voltage in its metal sheath. The sheath-lightning-overvoltage (SLOV) under one-terminal-grounding connection (OTGC) and cross-bonding connection (CBC) are simulated; and impulsive test was undertaken in real cable of Guangzhou power system. However it is hard to get the exact models and parameters. In this paper, based on the SLOV simulation, the effects of several factors, such as the cable structure and its length, stricken wave shape, magnitude and character of cable loads, the ground resistivity and impulsive grounding resistance are discussed. Simulation and discussion indicate that cable structure and its length, stricken wave shape, and magnitude and character of cable loads, have more influence to SLOV.

Parameter Analysis and Research on Sheath Lightning Overvoltage of Single-Core Cable

This study introduces a circuit breaker flashover accident caused by lightning strokes in a row of Xingren convertor station in Guizhou. To find out the reason of the flashover and whether fault circuit breaker insulation coordination can meet requirements under multiple lightning strikes, the overvoltage condition of hot-standby circuit breakers under lightning surge is calculated and checked by using EMTP and full-scale high impulse voltage test of the fault circuit breaker is conducted for the first time. Owing to the hot-standby state of the circuit breaker, the flashover accident is more likely to happen when lightning surge invades the substation or convertor station again. Measures to improve the hot-standby circuit breakers’ lightning withstand level are proposed and by simulating analysis, the measure combined installing a line arrester at a tower of the inlet line and installing an arrester near a certain breaker on the line proves to be effective.

Research on lightning surge overvoltage of convertor station with 500 kV hot‐standby circuit breakers

The lightning intruding waves in 220 kV GIS substation model was built by using ATP-EMTP software, calculate the lightning over-voltages on electric equipment in substation with different running modes, different grounding resistance and lightning shielding failure. The results show that the maximum over-voltage on electric equipment happened in single bus with single transformer; The smaller the grounding resistance, the smaller the over-voltage value on electric equipment in substation; the lightning shielding failure will not cause harm to substation. Finally, this paper used statistical methods to calculate the years of the safe operation of the substation. It is concluded that the safe running times of substation can meet the requirement when arresters were installed at the incoming lines and the entrance of transformer.

Research on lightning intruding waves in 220 kV GIS substation

Taking 220 kV cable as the research object, the influence of some parameters, such as grounding resistance, lead inductance, source impedance ratio, and rated voltage of arrester on the energy absorption characteristics of arrester is studied under the condition of single-phase grounding at the end, and the selection of energy absorption capacity of arrester is discussed. The results show that the energy absorbed by arrester is significantly affected by grounding resistance and rated voltage of arrester. At the same time, the calculation results also show that the lower the rated voltage, the more energy the arrester can bear, and the higher the requirement for its energy absorption capacity.

Study on Energy Absorption Characteristics of 220 kV Cable End Arrester

In view of problems of limited terrain, short effective dispersion length, and low resistance reduction efficiency in the extensional resistance reduction of the grounding grid of incoming line section of mine substation, a resistance reduction method using long -distance extension lead for auxiliary grounding of incoming line tower was proposed. The grounding calculation software CDEGS is used to establish simulation model of 'Τ' type, 'Γ' type, box type, vertical type unidirectional auxiliary grounding network, and study stray current characteristics of unidirectional auxiliary grounding grid of steel tube tower and corresponding influencing factors. The research results show that the longer the extension lead, the higher the resistance reduction efficiency; when the extension lead length exceeds 60 m, the resistance reduction efficiency is stable at about 80% under the action of high -frequency current; the 'Γ' type unidirectional auxiliary grounding grid has stable stray current characteristics, strong shunting ability, and its resistance reduction effect is the best; resistance reduction efficiency of the unidirectional auxiliary grounding grid is more than 70% under different soil conditions. In practical engineering applications, it is recommended to determine the extension lead length and terminal structure of the auxiliary grounding grid according to the actual soil conditions, and to lay the auxiliary grounding grid to areas with low soil resistivity or to take local soil replacement measures for areas with high soil resistivity to improve the resistance reduction efficiency of unidirectional auxiliary grounding grid of the incoming line tower.

Research on stray current characteristics of auxiliary grounding grid of incoming line tower of mine substation

ATP-EMTP simulation program is applied to simulate and analyze the lightning invasion wave performance of 35 kV substation in this paper. The results show that some factors of incoming lines and the riding position of lightning arrester in substation have a remarkable influence on invasion wave overvoltage of substation equipments. Based on the analysis and computation, the optimal parameters of the overvoltage protection are suggested.
