The increasing impacts of global climate change on crop performance pose a significant threat to global food security. The rhizosphere microbiomes intimately interact with the plant and can largely facilitate plants in growth promotion and stress resistance via multiple mechanisms. This review focuses on approaches for harnessing the rhizosphere microbiomes to produce beneficial effects toward enhanced crop productivity, including the use of organic and inorganic amendments, and microbial inoculants. Emerging methods, such as the utilization of synthetic microbial consortia, host-mediated microbiome engineering, prebiotics made from specific plant root exudates, and crop breeding to promote beneficial plant-microbiome interactions, are highlighted. Updating our knowledge in this field is critical for understanding and improving plant-microbiome interactions, thereby enhancing plant adaptiveness to changing environmental conditions.

Plant metabolites have a great influence on soil microbiomes. Although few studies provided insights into plant-microbe interactions, we still know very little about how plants recruit their microbiome. Here, we discuss the dynamic progress that typical metabolites shape microbes by a variety of factors, such as physiographic factors, cultivar factors, phylogeny factors, and environmental stress. Several kinds of metabolites have been reviewed, including plant primary metabolites (PPMs), phytohormones, and plant secondary metabolites (PSMs). The microbes assembled by plant metabolites in return exert beneficial effects on plants, which have been widely applied in agriculture. What's more, we point out existing problems and future research directions, such as unclear mechanisms, few species, simple parts, and ignorance of absolute abundance. This review may inspire readers to study plant-metabolite-microbe interactions in the future.

Dynamic metabolites: A bridge between plants and microbes.

The preservation of natural ecosystems, as well as the correct management of human societies, largely depends on the maintenance of critical microbial functions associated with soils. Soils are biodiversity rich pools, and rhizosphere soils can be associated with increased plant functions in addition to the regulation of nutrient cycling, litter decomposition, soil fertility and food production by agriculture systems. The application of biocontrol agents or plant growth-promoting bacteria has been tested in order to colonize roots at initial stages and offer advantages by promoting healthier and higher-yielding crops. In this review we describe the efforts to develop more sustainable systems that seek to minimize environmental disruption while maintaining plant health. Particular emphasis is given in this review to soil improvement strategies and the taxonomic groups involved in plant growth and protection against biotic stresses. It is important to define the impacts of land management and crop production practices on the structure and composition of soil bacterial communities. By promoting, monitoring and controlling the plant microbiome, and understanding the role of certain biocontrol agents within the plant throughout the lifecycle of the plant, we may substantially improve nutritional and environmental standards and reduce the negative impact of some agrochemicals. The integration of biological alternatives with traditional strategies may be critical to improve the sustainability of agriculture systems.

Advances in Soil Engineering: Sustainable Strategies for Rhizosphere and Bulk Soil Microbiome Enrichment.

Paddy-upland rotation is an effective agricultural management practice for alleviating soil sickness. However, the effect of varying degrees of flooding on the soil microbial community and crop performance remains unclear. We conducted a pot experiment to determine the effects of two soil water content (SWC) and two flooding durations on the soil microbial community attributes and yield in cucumber. In the pot experiment, cucumber was rotated with cress single (45 days) or double (90 days) under 100 or 80% SWC. Then, the soil microbial were inoculated into sterilized soil to verified the relationship between cucumber growth and microorganisms. The results indicated single cress rotation resulted in a higher cucumber yield than double cress rotation and control. Cress rotation under 80% SWC had higher soil microbial diversity than cress rotation under 100% SWC and control. Flooding duration and SWC led to differences in the structure of soil microbial communities. Under 80% SWC, single cress rotation increased the relative abundance of potentially beneficial microorganisms, including Roseiflexus and Pseudallescheria spp., in cucumber rhizosphere. Under 100% SWC, single cress rotation increased the relative abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria, such as Haliangium spp., and decreased potential pathogenic fungi, such as Fusarium and Monographella spp., compared with double cress rotation and control. Varying degrees of flooding were causing the difference in diversity, structure and composition of soil microbial communities in the cucumber rhizosphere, which have a positive effect on cucumber growth and development.

The strain is obtained by collecting rhizosphere soil of continuous cropping tomatoes, carrying out continuous concentration gradient dilution, carrying out isolated culture on microorganisms in a soil suspension by adopting a plate coating method, and performing screening through aplate confrontation experiment. The strain has good growth-promoting traits and a good field growth-promoting function, and can inhibit the occurrence of verticillium wilt; and when the tomatoes areinfected by verticillium wilt pathogenic bacteria, the strain can induce tomato system resistance, and enhance the verticillium wilt resistance of the tomatoes. The strain has a good utilization prospect in the aspect of relieving tomato continuous cropping obstacles.
