ConspectusLong-lived organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have recently drawn extensive attention because of their promising applications in information security, biological imaging, optoelectronic devices, and intelligent sensors. In contrast to conventional fluorescence, the RTP phenomenon originates from the slow radiative transition of triplet excitons. Thus, enhancing the intersystem crossing (ISC) rate from the lowest excited singlet state (S1) to the excited triplet state and suppressing the nonradiative relaxation channels of the lowest excited triplet state (T1) are reasonable methods for realizing highly efficient RTP in purely organic materials. Over the past few decades, many strategies have been designed on the basis of the above two crucial factors. The introduction of heavy atoms, aromatic carbonyl groups, and other heteroatoms with abundant lone-pair electrons has been demonstrated to strengthen the spin-orbit coupling, thereby successfully facilitating the ISC process. Furthermore, the rigid environment is commonly constructed through crystal engineering to restrict intramolecular motions and intermolecular collisions to decrease excited-state energy dissipation. However, most crystal-based organic RTP materials suffer from poor processability, flexibility, and reproducibility, becoming a thorny obstacle to their practical application.Amorphous organic polymers with long-lived RTP characteristics are more competitive in materials science. The intertwined structures and long chains of polymers not only ensure the rigid environment with multiple interactions but also protect triplet excitons from the surroundings, which are conducive to realizing ultralong and bright RTP emission. Exploring the fabrication strategies, intrinsic mechanisms, and practical applications of organic long-lived RTP polymers is highly desirable but remains a formidable challenge. In particular, intelligent organic RTP polymer systems that are capable of dynamically responding to external stimuli (e.g., light, temperature, oxygen, and humidity) have been rarely reported. To develop multifunctional RTP materials and expand their potential applications, a great amount of effort has been expended.This Account gives a summary of the significant advances in amorphous organic RTP polymer systems, especially smart stimulus-responsive ones, focusing on the construction of a rigid environment to suppress nonradiative deactivation by abundant inter/intramolecular interactions. The typical interactions in RTP polymer systems mainly include hydrogen bonding, ionic bonding, and covalent bonding, which can change the molecular electronic structures and affect the energy dissipation channels of the excited states. An in-depth understanding of intrinsic mechanisms and an extensive exploration of potential applications for excitation-dependent color-tunable, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation-activated, temperature-dependent, water-responsive, and circularly polarized RTP polymer systems are distinctly illustrated in this Account. Furthermore, we propose some detailed perspectives in terms of materials design, mechanism exploration, and promising application potential with the hope to provide helpful guidance for the future development of amorphous organic RTP polymers.

Long-Lived Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Amorphous Polymer Systems.

Abstract Chiral nanomaterials with intrinsic chirality or spatial asymmetry at the nanoscale are currently in the limelight of both fundamental research and diverse important technological applications due to their unprecedented physicochemical characteristics such as intense light-matter interactions, enhanced circular dichroism, and strong circularly polarized luminescence. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art advances in liquid crystal-templated chiral nanomaterials. The chiroptical properties of chiral nanomaterials are touched, and their fundamental design principles and bottom-up synthesis strategies are discussed. Different chiral functional nanomaterials based on liquid-crystalline soft templates, including chiral plasmonic nanomaterials and chiral luminescent nanomaterials, are systematically introduced, and their underlying mechanisms, properties, and potential applications are emphasized. This review concludes with a perspective on the emerging applications, challenges, and future opportunities of such fascinating chiral nanomaterials. This review can not only deepen our understanding of the fundamentals of soft-matter chirality, but also shine light on the development of advanced chiral functional nanomaterials toward their versatile applications in optics, biology, catalysis, electronics, and beyond.

Photoprogrammable circularly polarized phosphorescence switching of chiral helical polyacetylene thin films

The fabrication of chiral molecules into macroscopic systems has many valuable applications, especially in the fields of optical displays, data encryption, information storage, and so on. Here, we design and prepare a serious of supramolecular glasses (SGs) based on Zn-L-Histidine complexes, via an evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) strategy. Metal-ligand interactions between the zinc(II) ion and chiral L-Histidine endow the SGs with interesting circularly polarized afterglow (CPA). Multicolored CPA emissions from blue to red with dissymmetry factor as high as 9.5 × 10-3 and excited-state lifetime up to 356.7 ms are achieved under ambient conditions. Therefore, this work not only communicates the bulk SGs with wide-tunable afterglow and large circular polarization, but also provides an EISA method for the macroscopic self-assembly of chiral metal-organic hybrids toward photonic applications.

Supramolecular glasses with color-tunable circularly polarized afterglow through evaporation-induced self-assembly of chiral metal–organic complexes

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) switches have attracted widespread attention due to their potential applications in advanced information technologies. However, the design and fabrication of solid‐state multiple‐responsive CPL switches remain challenging. Here, through self‐assembly of chiral metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), a pair of crystalline enantiomeric (P)‐(+)/(M)‐(−)‐EuMOF⊃MAPbX3 (MA = CH3NH3+, X = Cl−, Br−, I−) adducts is prepared, where the achiral MAPbBr3 perovskite NCs embedded into chiral MOFs inherit the chirality of host MOFs by host‐guest EuBr and PbO coordination bonds, which is demonstrated by synchrotron‐radiation‐based X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. The chiral adducts show enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), good thermal stability of CPL in air, and photoswitchable CPL properties upon altering different UV irradiation. Based on two chiral emission centers and their different characteristics, reversible CPL switches are realized upon a diversity of external stimuli, for example, chemicals (water /CH3NH3Br solution) or temperatures (room temperature/high temperature). Benefiting from the extraordinary stimuli‐responsive and highly reversible switchable CPL, multiple information encryptions and decryptions integrated with CPL, together with a chiroptical logic gate are successfully designed. This work opens a new avenue to generally fabricate solid‐state CPL composite materials and develops new applications based on switchable CPL.

Multiple Responsive CPL Switches in an Enantiomeric Pair of Perovskite Confined in Lanthanide MOFs

The research in circularly polarized luminescence has attracted wide interest in recent years. Efforts on one side are directed toward the development of chiral materials with both high luminescence efficiency and dissymmetry factors, and on the other side, are focused on the exploitations of these materials in optoelectronic applications. This review summarizes the recent frontiers (mostly within five years) in the research in circularly polarized luminescence, including the development of chiral emissive materials based on organic small molecules, compounds with aggregation-induced emissions, supramolecular assemblies, liquid crystals and liquids, polymers, metal-ligand coordination complexes and assemblies, metal clusters, inorganic nanomaterials, and photon upconversion systems. In addition, recent applications of related materials in organic light-emitting devices, circularly polarized light detectors, and organic lasers and displays are also discussed.
