Recent economic and political events have further highlighted the need for new and strategically accessible sources of oil and gas. With the continually increasing demand for oil and gas, the requirement for pipeline steels with higher strength, toughness and weldability has been one of the most important factors driving the development of high strength pipeline steels, particularly with the oil exploration proceeding into arctic and deep sea regions, enhancing the weldability and mechanical properties of the new pipeline steels and weld consumables. Developments in the welding processes for manufacture and field welding are described in terms of process principles, equipment, consumables, weld quality, process economics and further developments. The increasing and changing requirement for weldability and mechanical properties in the heat affected zone and weld metal of pipeline welds are presented along with the reported solutions to the problems.

Challenges and developments in pipeline weldability and mechanical properties

High power density electron beam and laser beam welding show their unique advantages in the welding of thick-section steels for potential nuclear pressure vessel manufacture. Compared with traditional submerged arc welding or newly developed narrow-gap submerged arc welding, electron beam welding and laser beam welding techniques offer high welding speeds, low heat inputs, lower levels of residual stresses and distortion, while consuming less filler material and power. As a part of the new nuclear manufacturing EPSRC Program, this study aimed to develop narrow gap laser welding procedures and parameters for joining 30–130 mm thick ferritic steels for potential application to pressure vessel manufacture in civil nuclear power plants. Narrow gap laser welding for potential nuclear pressure vessel manufacture

The inhomogeneous microstructure and fatigue crack propagation of 30 mm thick-section high strength steel welded joint by double-sided hybrid fiber laser-arc welding were investigated in detail. The results indicated that the average effective grain size of the laser zone was only 1/2 of that of the arc zone, due to the faster cooling rate of the laser resource. The base metal consisted of massive polygonal ferrites and small granular carbides, while fine grained region, the coarse grained region and weld metal were all composed of martensite with a high dislocation density. Compared with the arc zone, the percentage of grain boundaries with high misorientation angle increased 24% for the laser zone, as the average grain size of the laser zone was smaller than that of the arc zone. The results also revealed that the fatigue crack propagation resistance of the welded joint was higher than that of the base metal. Meanwhile, a significant increase in the fatigue crack propagation resistance of the laser zone occurred, as compared with the arc zone, due to the refined grains and the high proportion of the grain boundaries with high misorientation angle (>15°) in the laser zone.
