Increasing flux of noxious organics and heavy metals emitted by industrial effluents into surface water bodies have been terrifying the ecology in recent years. Herein, we have designed new Z-scheme 0D/2D Fe2WO6/Eu-doped BiOBr (FW/Eu-BOB) nanocomposites for efficient simultaneous visible light decomposition of two endocrine disruptors, namely bisphenol A (BPA) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The successful nanocomposite fabrication was validated via crystallography and spectroscopic analyses, whereas the morphologic traits were testified via microscopy studies. Compared to single-phase component samples, 15-FW/2Eu-BOB nanocomposite displayed enhanced photoactivity, which completely eradicated both BPA and Cr(VI) after 50 min of visible light irradiation. The ameliorated photoactivity was ascribed to the Z-scheme electron transfer between FW and Eu-BOB, and its expedition of charge separation was proven by optoelectronic analyses. Furthermore, the 15-FW/2Eu-BOB nanocomposite showed good adaptability in a broad pH range, resistance to co-existing interfering substances and great durability after multiple runs. The real-world viability of 15-FW/2Eu-BOB photocatalysis was also tested via the real printed ink effluent-containing BPA and Cr(VI) treatment. Moreover, the phytotoxicity tests presented that the photocatalytically treated effluent promoted the germination of Vigna unguiculata which shown its environmentally friendly for practical uses. The hydroxyl radical and photogenerated electron were proven to be dominant reactive species in photocatalytic reaction. This study offers a new insight for designing highly efficient visible light-active photocatalysts toward eradicating multifarious pollutants in effluent. 

Design and synthesis of Fe2WO6/Eu-doped BiOBr nanocomposite: A novel 0D/2D Z-scheme heterojunction system for simultaneous boosted visible-light driven photocatalytic bisphenol A degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

Plastic products have gained global popularity due to their lightweight, excellent ductility, high durability, and portability. However, out of the 8.3 billion tons of plastic waste generated by human activities, 80% of plastic waste is discarded due to improper disposal, and then transformed into microplastic pollution under the combined influence of environmental factors and microorganisms. In this comprehensive study, we present a thorough review of recent advancements in research on the source, distribution, and effect of microplastics. More importantly, we conducted deep research on the catalytic degradation technologies of microplastics in water, including advanced oxidation and photocatalytic technologies, and elaborated on the mechanisms of microplastics degradation in water. Besides, various strategies for mitigating microplastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems are discussed, ranging from policy interventions, the initiative for plastic recycling, the development of efficient catalytic materials, and the integration of multiple technological approaches. This review serves as a valuable resource for addressing the challenge of removing microplastic contaminants from water bodies, offering insights into effective and sustainable solutions. 

Degradation of microplastic in water by advanced oxidation processes.

The traditional homogenous and heterogenous Fenton reactions have frequently been restrained by the lower production of Fe2+ ions, which significantly obstructs the generation of hydroxyl radicals from the decomposition of H2O2. Thus, we introduce novel photo-Fenton-assisted plasmonic heterojunctions by immobilizing Fe3O4 and Bi nanoparticles onto 3D Sb2O3 via co-precipitation and solvothermal approaches. The ternary Sb2O3/Fe3O4/Bi composites offered boosted photo-Fenton behavior with a metronidazole (MNZ) oxidation efficiency of 92% within 60 min. Among all composites, the Sb2O3/Fe3O4/Bi-5% hybrid exhibited an optimum photo-Fenton MNZ reaction constant of 0.03682 min− 1, which is 5.03 and 2.39 times higher than pure Sb2O3 and Sb2O3/Fe3O4, respectively. The upgraded oxidation activity was connected to the complementary outcomes between the photo-Fenton behavior of Sb2O3/Fe3O4 and the plasmonic effect of Bi NPs. The regular assembly of Fe3O4 and Bi NPs enhances the surface area and stability of Sb2O3/Fe3O4/Bi. Moreover, the limited absorption spectra of Sb2O3 were extended into solar radiation by the Fe3+ defect of Fe3O4 NPs and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Bi NPs. The photo-Fenton mechanism suggests that the co-existence of Fe3O4/Bi NPs acts as electron acceptor/donor, respectively, which reduces recombination losses, prolongs the lifetime of photocarriers, and produces more reactive species, stimulating the overall photo-Fenton reactions. On the other hand, the photo-Fenton activity of MNZ antibiotics was optimized under different experimental conditions, including catalyst loading, solution pH, initial MNZ concentrations, anions, and real water environments. Besides, the trapping outcomes verified the vital participation of •OH, h+, and •O2− in the MNZ destruction over Sb2O3/Fe3O4/Bi-5%. In summary, this work excites novel perspectives in developing boosted photosystems through integrating the photocatalysis power with both Fenton reactions and the SPR effects of plasmonic materials. 

Synthesis of 3D Sb2O3-based heterojunction reinforced by SPR effect and photo-Fenton mechanism for upgraded oxidation of metronidazole in water environments

Cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers are prepared using solution blow co-spinning (SBS) with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The pure CA membranes are obtained by washing water-soluble PEO from the fibrous CA-PEO blend. Nanofibrous membranes are characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and surface zeta potential measurements. Thermal transitions from DSC and ATR-FTIR spectra analysis were used to confirm the removal of the PEO. Although the characteristic signals of PEO are not observed by FTIR, an additional thermal step transition in CA nanofibers indicates the embedding of a small amount of PEO (up to 6 wt%). SEM analysis shows that CA-PEO blends are constituted by fibers with mean diameters from 671 to 857 nm (depending on the SBS parameters), while after PEO removal, diameters range from 567 to 605 nm. We propose a new method for staining CA-PEO membranes with iodine solution in absolute ethanol that allows the differentiation of CA and PEO components with an optical microscope. The microscopy results suggest that PEO assists in the spinning by enveloping CA nanofibers, allowing uninterrupted processing. The successful deacetylation to cellulose using an aqueous KOH solution is confirmed with zeta potential measurements and ATR-FTIR.

A novel series of g-C3N4/BiOBr (CN/BOB) Z-scheme heterojunction catalysts with two-dimensional/two-dimensional (2D/2D) morphology were synthesized by an in-situ hydrolysis method for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Without adding any sacrificial agents or co-catalysts, the optimal CN/BOB heterostructure exhibits a boosted CO generation rate of 20.1 μmol·g-1·h-1 under the simulated solar light irradiation, severally being 1.7 and 3.7 times that of pristine BiOBr and g-C3N4. The enhanced performance principally benefit from the 2D/2D microstructure and Z-scheme heterojunction of photocatalysts. The intimate contact of 2D/2D morphology signifies more transmission channels and shorter transfer interface distance of photogenerated charges. While relevant characterizations and first-principles calculations jointly demonstrate that the Z-scheme heterojunction could significantly accelerate the spatial separation and transfer of photo-induced carriers, and evidently promote the redox ability of photocatalysts. The research furnishes a novel strategy to construct a promising bismuth oxyhalide based heterojunction catalyst for the application of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. 

In-situ construction of Z-scheme 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiOBr heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Photocatalysts with Z-scheme AgI/BiOBr heterojunction were prepared through hydrothermal process combined with in situ co-precipitation. Optimum hydrothermal pH value (pH=4) for synthesizing pure BiOBr was selected by conducting photocatalysis tests. Z-scheme AgI/BiOBr heterojunctions were constructed to enhance the photocatalytic performance. Benefiting from the above two strategies, BAI-5 (pH=4, AgI loading amount 13 wt%) presented the best photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. The apparent reaction rate constant in degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) upon BAI-5 reached 0.01801 min−1, which was 5.29 times as that upon the pure BiOBr sample BOB-4 (pH=4). In addition, the property of the catalyst for repeated use was analyzed. After 5 cycles, the photocatalytic efficiency of the catalyst still remained 94%. The major active species were determined and the photocatalytic mechanism was revealed. The introduction of AgI enlarged the absorption range of visible light and facilitated the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. The as-prepared photocatalyst BAI-5 may have promising application prospects in environment purification.
