Abstract Intensive agriculture in Germany is not only highly productive but has also led to detrimental effects in the environment. Crop diversification together with new field arrangements considering soil heterogeneities can be an alternative to improve resource use efficiency (RUE), ecosystem services (ESS), and biodiversity. Agroecosystem models are tools that help us to understand and design diversified new field arrangements. The main goal of this study was to review the extent to which agroecosystem models have been used for crop diversification design at field and landscape scale by considering soil heterogeneities and to understand the model requirements for this purpose. We found several agroecosystem models available for simulating spatiotemporal crop diversification at the field scale. For spatial crop diversification, simplified modelling approaches consider crop interactions for light, water, and nutrients, but they offer restricted crop combinations. For temporal crop diversification, agroecosystem models include the major crops (e.g., cereals, legumes, and tuber crops). However, crop parameterization is limited for marginal crops and soil carbon and nitrogen (N). At the landscape scale, decision-making frameworks are commonly used to design diversified cropping systems. Within-field soil heterogeneities are rarely considered in field or landscape design studies. Combining static frameworks with dynamic agroecosystems models can be useful for the design and evaluation of trade-offs for ESS delivery and biodiversity. To enhance modeling capabilities to simulate diversified cropping systems in new field arrangements, it will be necessary to improve the representation of crop interactions, the inclusion of more crop species options, soil legacy effects, and biodiversity estimations. Newly diversified field arrangement design also requires higher data resolution, which can be generated via remote sensing and field sensors. We propose the implementation of a framework that combines static approaches and process-based models for new optimized field arrangement design and propose respective experiments for testing the combined framework.

Model-based design of crop diversification through new field arrangements in spatially heterogeneous landscapes. A review

Exploring the coupling characteristics of regional water resources and food security helps to promote the sustainable development of grain production and is of great significance for achieving global food security. From the aspects of regional “water supply”, “water use” and “water demand”, the coupling characteristics of water resources and food security were systematically revealed; the new challenges faced by regional food security from the perspective of water resources were clarified; and effective ways to promote the utilization of regional water resources and the sustainable development of grain production were explored. This paper took Northwest China, which is the most arid region, where water-resource utilization and food security are in contradiction, as the research area. The water-resource load index, the water footprint of grain production and the water-consumption footprint were used to quantify the regional water-resource pressure index, as well as the residential grain-consumption types, population urbanization, the industrial-grain-processing industry and their corresponding water-consumption footprints from 2000 to 2020. The coupling characteristics of water resources and food security were systematically revealed. The results showed the following: (1) In 2000–2020, the water-resource load index increased from 4.0 to 10.7, and the load level increased from III to I. At the same time, agricultural water resources were largely allocated elsewhere. (2) During the period, the food rations showed a significant decreasing trend, and the average annual reduction was 3.4% (p < 0.01). The water footprint of animal products increased, particularly for beef and poultry (the average annual growth rates were 9.9% and 6.3%, respectively). In addition, the water footprint of industrial food consumption increased by 297.1%. (3) With the improvement of the urbanization level, the water-consumption footprint increased by 85.9%. It is expected that the water footprint of grain consumption will increase by 39.4% and 52.3% by 2030 and 2040, respectively. Exploring how to take effective measures to reduce the water footprint to meet food-security needs is imperative. This study proposed measures to improve the utilization efficiency of blue and green water and reduce gray water and the grain-consumption water footprint from the aspects of regional planting-structure optimization potential, water-saving irrigation technology, dietary-structure transformation and virtual water trade; these measures could better relieve the water-resource pressure and promote the sustainable development of grain production and water-resource utilization.

Analysis of the Coupling Characteristics of Water Resources and Food Security: The Case of Northwest China

Agricultural sustainability is threatened by pressures from water scarcity, energy crises, escalating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and diminishing farm profitability. Practices that diversify crop rotations, retain crop residues, and incorporate cover crops have been widely studied for their impacts on soil organic carbon and crop production. However, their associated usage of natural resources and economic returns have been overlooked. Here, we employed a food-energy-water-carbon (FEWC) nexus framework to assess the sustainability of crop rotations plus various management strategies across three sub-regions of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. We found that compared with residue burning and fallowing, residue retention and cover cropping contributed to GHG abatement, but the latter consumed more energy and water per hectare. The composite sustainability scores, calculated with the FEWC framework, suggested that legume-inclusive rotations were generally more sustainable. Furthermore, in northern NSW (with existing sorghum/wheat/chickpea/wheat rotation), residue retention with cover cropping was most suitable combination, while the use of residue retention with fallow yielded greater benefits in southern NSW (with existing wheat/field pea/wheat/canola rotation). Regional disparities in climate, soil, cropping systems, and on-farm costs prompted region-specific strategies to address the unbalanced distribution among FEWC domains. Our study provides assessments for identifying feasible management practices to advance agricultural sustainability. 

A food-energy-water-carbon nexus framework informs region-specific optimal strategies for agricultural sustainability


 The North China Plain (NCP) is a crucial agricultural region for grain production in China, primarily focusing on wheat and maize cultivation. However, these crop yields are highly vulnerable to fluctuations in temperature and precipitation, with climate change being a significant factor. This study investigates the impact of climate factors on wheat and maize yields in the NCP under various crop rotations and water supply strategies. Using the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) crop mechanism model, we evaluated the effects of different crop rotations and water supply strategies on wheat and maize yields. A comprehensive analysis of the simulated results determined the yield variation trends and their correlation and sensitivity to different climate factors. The findings revealed that precipitation levels over the past 40 years showed no significant trend, while radiation levels showed a significant decreasing trend, and annual mean maximum and minimum temperatures displayed significant increasing trends. Furthermore, the study found that irrigation practices and crop rotations substantially impact grain yield in the study area, with average yields ranging from 8105.5 kg/ha under rainfed conditions to 13088.8 kg/ha under fully irrigated conditions. There was a statistically significant trend of increasing yields for fully irrigated Monocrop-Wheat and decreasing yields for fully irrigated Monocrop-Maize over the past 40 years. Sensitivity analysis also showed that rational rotation and irrigation can reduce grain yield sensitivity to climate change. In conclusion, the prudent use of rotation and irrigation can enhance food production resilience to climate change. These findings have significant implications for developing strategies to optimize crop yields and adapt to climate change in the NCP while considering trade-offs.

 Climate is one of the main factors affecting agricultural water use. The variation of different climate factors will have a great impact on the balance of water supply, which will significantly aggravate the water-related threats to the sustainability of agricultural production. As a typical agricultural area of China, the Huang-Huai-Hai region is one of the major grain-producing areas. In order to evaluate the response of future agricultural water use to future uncertain changeable factors, this study assessed future agricultural water use with the coupling effect of climate change, irrigation efficiency and plantation structure change. The results showed that the temperature and precipitation both increased to different degrees under the two greenhouse gas emission and radiation forcing scenarios, which have great impacts on the crop water requirement (ETc) of main crops. Under RCP (Representative Concentration Pathways) 8.5, a 10% increase in the irrigation water utilization coefficient will reduce the regional irrigation water requirement by about 13 Gm3, and the adjustment of plantation structure will reduce the irrigation water consumption by about 11 Gm3. The quantitative analysis suggests that the improvement of the irrigation efficiency and the expansion of water-saving crop plantation areas in the future will moderate the adverse impact of climate change on agricultural water use. This study provides a reference for the management of agricultural water and the rational distribution of water resources under the future climate change.
