Electrospun multi-functional medicated tri-section Janus nanofibers for an improved anti-adhesion tendon repair

Biodegradable conductive films are crucial for the sustainable development of wearable electronics. In this work, a flexible and degradable conductive film was prepared based on a carefully designed interface of polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun fibers and silver nanowires (AgNWs). The amphiphilic triblock copolymer was added to PLA solution for electrospinning, followed by solvent posttreatment to induce the hydrophilic block of the amphiphilic triblock copolymer to migrate to the fiber surface. Dopamine can be uniformly polymerized on the surface of hydrophilic PLA fibers, and the prepared PLA@PDA fiber film can form a good interface combination with AgNWs. The electrical conductivity of AgNWs/PLA@PDA flexible film can reach 258.5 S cm−1, showing obvious Joule heating effect and good mechanical properties. Degradation experiments showed that in phosphate buffered saline, the PLA molecular chain showed a dynamic equilibrium due to the scission and rearrangement of the ester groups and degraded slowly, while AgNWs/PLA@PDA degraded rapidly under alkaline conditions. Our study provides a simple and controllable method to prepare flexible degradable electronic films, which is expected to be applied to flexible wearable bioelectrodes.

Biodegradable flexible conductive film based on sliver nanowires and PLA electrospun fibers

Multifunctional wearable heaters have attracted much attention for their effective applications in personal thermal management and medical therapy. Compared to passive heating, Joule heating offers significant advantages in terms of reusability, reliable temperature control, and versatile coupling. Joule-heated fabrics make wearable electronics smarter. This review critically discusses recent advances in Joule-heated smart fabrics, focusing on various fabrication strategies based on material-structure synergy. Specifically, various applicable conductive materials with Joule heating effect are first summarized. Subsequently, different preparation methods for Joule heating fabrics are compared, and then their various applications in smart clothing, healthcare, and visual indication are discussed. Finally, the challenges faced in developing these smart Joule heating fabrics and their possible solutions are discussed.

Recent Research on Preparation and Application of Smart Joule Heating Fabrics.

Combination therapy with oral administration of several active ingredients is a popular clinical treatment for cancer. However, the traditional method has poor convenience, less safety, and low efficiency for patients. The combination of traditional pharmaceutical techniques and advanced material conversion methods can provide new solutions to this issue. In this research, a new kind of hybrid film was created via coaxial electrospraying, followed by a casting process. The films were composed of Reglan and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-loaded cellulose acetate (CA) core-shell particles in a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) film matrix. Microscopic observations of these films demonstrated a solid cross section loaded with core-shell particles. X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared tests verified that the Reglan and 5-FU loaded in the films showed amorphous states and fine compatibilities with the polymeric matrices, i.e., PVP and CA, respectively. In vitro dissolution tests indicated that the films were able to provide the desired asynchronous dual-drug delivery, fast release of Reglan, and sustained release of 5-FU. The controlled release mechanisms were shown to be an erosion mechanism for Reglan and a typical Fickian diffusion mechanism for 5-FU. The protocols reported herein pioneer a new approach for fabricating biomaterials loaded with multiple drugs, each with its own controlled release behavior, for synergistic cancer treatment.

Hybrid films loaded with 5-fluorouracil and Reglan for synergistic treatment of colon cancer via asynchronous dual-drug delivery

Composite nanofibrous yarns (CNY), featuring a submicron electrospun sheath coated on a micro-scale core yarn have gained attention within the academic and industrial communities due to their unique structure. When braided, these CNYs hold great promise as next-generation surgical yarns. However, large-scale production of CNYs using conventional electrospinning techniques remains technologically challenging, and maintaining the integrity of the fibrous sheath during braiding presents further difficulties. Here, we propose a novel approach for continuously fabricating functional braided CNYs using collectorless alternating current (AC) electrospinning and braiding technology. Our approach utilized polycaprolactone-polylactic acid (PCL-PLA) blends and PCL-PLA with chlorhexidine (CHX) or triclosan (TRC) electrospun fibers for the sheath layer, while PLA micro-yarns acted as the core layer. Morphological analyses confirmed the successful fabrication of braided CNYs. Additionally, infrared spectroscopy validated the presence of CHX or TRC in the resulting yarns. The resulting braided CNYs exhibited excellent breaking force (29 N) and thermal stability (270 °C). Cytotoxicity and antibacterial assessments demonstrated that CHX-loaded braided CNYs could serve as biocompatible antibacterial surgical sutures. The proposed method offers a versatile approach for producing various functional braided CNYs applicable in tissue engineering scaffolds, filters, wearable electronics, and sensors. 

Continuous fabrication of braided composite nanofibrous surgical yarns using advanced AC electrospinning and braiding technology

Fibrous membranes with asymmetric wettability have attracted great interest. Benefiting from the inspiration of biological paradigms and the development of fabrication techniques, many asymmetric wettability membranes with well-designed surface topologies and chemical compositions have been reported in the literature. In this review, different structures of asymmetric wetted fibrous membranes are discussed, including Janus, sandwich, gradient, and hierarchy structure. Various top-down and bottom-up methods for the construction of asymmetric wetted fibrous membranes are summarized, including template, etching, surface modification, phase separation, self-assembly, electrospinning/electrospraying, and various composite methods. Furthermore, biological applications of asymmetric wetted fibrous membranes, such as smart fabrics, sensors, drug release, wound dressings, and tissue patches, are reviewed. Future challenges for asymmetric wettability fibrous membranes are suggested.

Soft and stretchable transparent electrodes still face many challenges, requiring a balance between stretchability, conductivity, transparency, and stability. In this paper, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomer is selected, and amphoteric nonionic surfactants (Triton X-100) are introduced to improve the interfacial bonding between nanosilica (SiO2) and the elastic matrix. At the same time, a fluorosilane-modified glass template is used to induce nanosilica enrichment on the membrane surface. Based on the dual effects of nanoenhancement and surface regulation, a PDMS transparent nanocomposite membrane with good stretchability, surface hydrophilicity, and easy in situ polymerization of polydopamine can be obtained. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) conductive polymers can be assembled layer by layer on the surface of the nanocomposite membrane by simple spin coating and heat treatment. The transmittance of the soft and stretchable composite membrane can reach 63% in the visible light range, and the strength and elongation at break increase to 2.30 MPa and 150%, respectively. The sheet resistance of the stretchable transparent dry electrode is as low as about 6 Ω/sq. After being placed in the air for 3 months, the resistance increment is less than 5%, showing good environmental stability. The stretchable transparent electrode prepared based on the material-structure-preparation integrated method has brilliant application potential in wearable thermal management, electrochromism, strain sensing, and electromagnetic shielding.
